FOOTPRINTS The past three months have been mostly consumed by the planning of our new race, HARRC after Dark. This will be a 7-K race on Friday evening August 26 th . It will start in Kunkle Plaza near Front and State Streets at 7 P.M. and run along the river finishing at River Front Park near Front and Forster streets. Over 40 club members have volunteered in some capacity to make this race successful. Some volunteers are taking on two or three tasks. Aspire Urgent Care and Family Medicine and its running arm, Team Aspire, have signed on to be the major sponsor of the race. Scotzin Brothers, where you can find all your beer and wine making equipment, Faulkner Buick-GMC and Karns Foods are also supporting the race. The Inside Track is providing discounted gift certificates for the first three overall runners and first master, male and female, in the race. Made to Keep has designed the race T-Shirts. Printed applications are being distributed and online registration is available. HARRC Members receive a $10.00 discount. Packet pickup and walk -in registration will be available at the YMCA on Aug 25 and 26. In other news, HARRC is going to use a new method for selecting the male and female Runners of the Year. J.R. Bishop ...................................................... Newsletter Editor, Web Content Administrator J.R. lives in Dillsburg and has been running with the club since January 2010. His initial reason for running was health-related, but since joining HARRC he’s acquired several new reasons. He also enjoys running with his dog, Griffin. He had become very sedentary before meeting his wonderful wife, Melody, but she has taken his change of lifestyle well and is no longer surprised when she wakes up to find herself alone with their three cats. J.R. has worked in the printing industry for many years and is the current Newsletter Editor of Footprints as well as the Website Content Administrator of www.HARRC.org.

Jerod Girton .............................................................................. Runner of the Year Statistician Jerod has been running since December 2008 when he got a new treadmill for Christmas. He ran cross country and track in high school but never took is seriously until the last few years. Now, even with a busy work schedule that involves travel to India, China, Mexico, and other regions of the world, he makes it a priority to get 4 to 5 days of running a week. "One of my biggest thrills is to run in places that few get to visit; last month I ran past the Angel of Independence Monument in Mexico City." Jerod is married to his lovely wife Jennifer and has two beautiful children, Lucas (10) and Carmen (9).

HOW IT WORKS:

HARRC has one AGCS Sunday

Run a month (see schedule).

Runners get one point for each

person behind them as well as 5

points for participation. Race

Directors of AGCS Sunday Runs

receive one point plus five, unless

they also run the course in which

they are scored like the other

runners. To be eligible for the Age

Group Award at the end of the

AGCS-year (September to August),

runners must have run in at least six

AGCS Sunday Runs.

THE MONTH IN WHICH YOU JOINED,

PLUS 30 DAYS GRACE. RESTRICTED

DATA SHOULD BE SO INDICATED

1) How long have you been running, and what was your original reason for running?

I have been running since I was 30, so it’s been around 32 years. My running began with only a mile or two here and there. My husband and I were avid water skiers and barefoot water skiers, but after lugging our equipment back and forth to the river after 24 years, we decided it was time to sell the boat and move on. I told my husband that since water skiing was such a physical sport, I would try and do a little more running. So, I did some research on the web and found the Harrisburg Area Road Running Club's website. I clicked on Sunday runs and called the race director, who happened to be Dave Lebo. He was so friendly on the phone and said HARRC would love to have another runner join them on Sunday. Well, if you know Dave and Marge Lebo, they are legends with HARRC. I did my first Sunday run on April 10, 2005, and the rest is history. I have the original Sunday run results for that day, and Dave welcomed new runner Patty Parker to HARRC. I was so excited that I joined the club shortly after and have been running strong ever since that first Sunday run.

On September 18, 2005, two days before my 56th birthday, I ran my first half marathon and came in first in my age class and was even more enthused after winning an award for the very first

time. At age 60, I completed my first marathon in Harrisburg and was so surprised when I placed first in my age class for that race. So, needless to say, I am very enthusiastic about running.

2) Have your reasons for running changed over time or have they stayed the same?

My running has changed over time. When I first started road racing, my goal was to do the best I could. It was more of a personal challenge. I started placing in my age class more and more. Evidently, this provoked me to do even better and run even stronger because now the competitor in me kicked in and I have done very well placing in my age class.

3) You participate in many local fundraising events. Do you decide which races to run based on the cause they benefit?

Most all races I choose to run are always for a good cause. There are many races I will not give up. Members of my family have been afflicted with breast cancer, diabetes, ALS, and heart disease. These are the runs I will look for first. I am physically active in other organizations. I am a member of Momentum Female Fitness Center in Mechanicsburg. That organization raises a lot of money for ALS, the American Cancer Society, and LLS. I also belong to the Susquehanna Snow Ski Club. This club is very active in Special Olympics. However, running is a healing process for whatever ails you so running is also a personal benefit.

4) What are your running goals for next year?

I plan to run another marathon next year but not sure at this point which one I will do. I will continue to do as many local 5-K races I can fit in my schedule. I like to do at least one race per

weekend and enjoy doing the HARRC Sunday Runs with the club members. I prefer to do longer runs, but there are not many longer runs in the area. I plan to do the 10-Mile and 10-K runs whenever they are scheduled for next year. My main goal in the future is to qualify and complete the Boston Marathon. I qualified in 2009. but because of the registration process for the Boston event, registration opened and closed in one day even before I got on the web site.

5) If you could only participate in one local race next year, which one would it be and why?

This is definitely a tough question. As I stated previously all races are for a good cause. If I really had to choose it would be two races—Pace 4 Pam & Pals, which raises money for ALS, and the Colon Cancer Prevention 5-K.
