About food in FootscrayEthiopian cuisine fast facts

Most of Footscray’s food outlets cook with produce sourced direct from the local Footscray Market, wholesale fish market or specialty Vietnamese produce centre, Little Saigon Market, giving the Footscray food scene a consistently high standard in quality and freshness.

With over 135 different cultural communities living here, Footscray is renowned for its food diversity and fresh produce markets.

No need for knives and forks, eat Ethiopian food with your hands using torn off pieces of injera bread to pick up food.

Injera is a flat bread, shaped like a crepe, and is used as a platter for stews and served on the side of main dishes.

Tibs are plates of sautéed lamb, beef or goat meat, prepared with onion and chillies. This is a good dish to try for your first Ethiopian food experience.

Sitting on the western city fringe and flanked by the Maribyrnong River, Footscray has a rich Indigenous, industrial, culturally diverse and creative past that has shaped its unique personality.

Home to the Western Bulldogs AFL team, 20,000 students studying at two Victoria University campuses and a major hospital, Footscray is vibrant suburb with a passionate community.

There is a huge arts scene here with Footscray the base for major arts organisations including Footscray Community Arts Centre, the Snuff Puppets, Women’s Circus and the Big West Festival. There are eight art galleries in town and a full calendar of events and festivals.

There is natural beauty too. The majestic Footscray Park is one of the largest Edwardian parks in Australia and Newells Paddock Wetland Reserve is considered an important inner city conservation park. The Maribyrnong River attracts birdlife and even the occasional wayward seal.

Vietnamese food is a specialty here with everything from street style food, iced coffee, pork rolls, pho, and traditional dishes from each end of Vietnam on offer.

Ethiopian food (African cuisine) is also a specialty, with Footscray hosting the highest concentration of restaurants in the country ready to introduce you to this unique cuisine.

How to read the guideEateries are sorted into cuisine types, reflecting the vast range of food on offer. Eateries can be cafes, restaurants, market kiosks and bakeries – wherever you can find a quick bite, a long lunch or settle in for a special occasion banquet.Australian fusion describes Western based menus: from the humble sandwich to pancakes, brioche and premium steak.International fusion includes menus that deviate from a non-Western based cuisine, like Indonesian/Chinese or Ethiopian/Australian combinations.African cuisine encompasses Ethiopian, Eritrean, Somalian and Sudanese food.Middle Eastern cuisine includes Turkish kebab houses plus Iraqi and Persian specialty cuisines.Look out for the wine symbol in the listings to find your local bars and pubs. Bakeries have a breadstick symbol.
