NADA’S TAKE AWAY Footscray Market Stall 250/81 Hopkins St, 0412 360 261 Map 2 G3 56
Peer between the potato cakes and bacon n’ egg rolls at Nada’s, and you’ll discover a hidden gem. Nada Zezovski makes her traditional Macedonian burek by hand, right down to the pastry, which curls in warm ruffles around soft ricotta cheese. Get in quick each day before they sell out.
NHU LAN BAKERY116 Hopkins St, 9689 7296 Map 2 F2 150
If the scrum at Nhu Lan’s counter doesn’t convince you as to the merits of their banh mi, one bite surely will. Banh mi are Vietnamese style baguettes and Nhu Lan’s are the best in the ‘burb. Go the grilled chicken, chockers with pickled carrot, fresh cucumber spear and coriander sprigs.
OLYMPIC DOUGHNUTS43A Irving St, 9689 4819 Map 2 G4 59
Olympic Doughnuts’ battered caravan has been snuggled up to Footscray Station for over 30 years. The recent redevelopment saw the van put out to pasture, but the jam still flows at a purpose built kiosk in the station forecourt. The hot, crisp doughnuts are carefully filled and sugared to order. A Footscray institution.
PHO HUNG VUONG SAIGON128 Hopkins St, 9689 6002 Map 2 F2 153
Pho Hung Vuong Saigon is shiny and smart, with stellar pho to match. Not five minutes after ordering, a steaming bowl of soup will land right under your nose. An order of sliced beef and chicken pho nabs you a fragrant bowl of supple rice noodles, wafer-thin rare beef and juicy sliced chicken breast.
ROTI ROAD189-193 Barkly St, 0415 543 199 Map 2 D3 113
This road leads to some of the best house made roti in Melbourne. In the evenings, you might catch a roti master twirling and spinning dough to an upbeat tune, as he jumps and jives among the diners. In the daytime, Roti Road serves yum cha, made locally by one of the owners’ parents.
SAPA HILLS112 Hopkins St, 9687 5729 Map 2 F2 159
When it comes to fantastic Vietnamese fare, Sapa Hills is a confident and capable all rounder. Crunchy, fresh coleslaws are another standout.
T. CAVALLARO & SON98 Hopkins St, 9687 4638 Map 2 G2 125
If there is a Mister Footscray, it has to be Tony Cavallaro. “Cavallaro’s” is a family business that’s been running in the same spot since 1956. They are famed for their Sicilian-style cakes and cookies, still made faithfully to family recipes. The cannoli have a cult like following – try the candied ricotta.
VANAKKAM359 Barkly St, 9687 2233 Map 1 B4 102
It’s a little ways from central ‘scray, but Vanakkam rewards those who make the trek. The house special here is biryani. The chicken variety sees pieces of chook marinated and cooked in a sealed pot with basmati rice. The result is fragrant, delicate and delicious, perfect with the accompanying raita and tangy tamarind sauce.
1+1 DUMPLING NOODLES84 Hopkins St, 9687 8988 Map 2 G2 83
1+1 serves Chinese food, but not as you may know it. The cuisine here is from the northwestern province of Xinjiang, and relies not on rice, but on lamb and wheat. Try the smoky, juicy lamb skewers, bristling with cumin and chili. The dumplings are excellent too – try the pan fried veggie variety.
8 BIT8 Droop St, 0403 570 028 Map 2 E2 25
8 Bit takes a passion for old video games and fuses it with an American diner vibe. The result is a combo that’s fast paced, friendly and wickedly good. Go a Golden Axe burger with fried chicken and slaw, and double down with the cheese and bacon fries, gooey with cheese sauce and sprinkled with bacon pieces.

How to read the guideEateries are sorted into cuisine types, reflecting the vast range of food on offer. Eateries can be cafes, restaurants, market kiosks and bakeries – wherever you can find a quick bite, a long lunch or settle in for a special occasion banquet.Australian fusion describes Western based menus: from the humble sandwich to pancakes, brioche and premium steak.International fusion includes menus that deviate from a non-Western based cuisine, like Indonesian/Chinese or Ethiopian/Australian combinations.African cuisine encompasses Ethiopian, Eritrean, Somalian and Sudanese food.Middle Eastern cuisine includes Turkish kebab houses plus Iraqi and Persian specialty cuisines.Look out for the wine symbol in the listings to find your local bars and pubs. Bakeries have a breadstick symbol.
