The vision for the Footscray Learning Precinct is to create a world-class education precinct, providing excellence in learning and teaching in Melbourne’s inner-west at all ages and all stages of education. The Footscray Learning Precinct is an opportunity for education to work in a whole new way. It will link education facilities across Footscray, providing exceptional learning opportunities for students, from early childhood through to secondary school and beyond. The precinct will enhance community links, build on the existing historical richness and diversity of Melbourne’s inner-west, and enable students to become future-ready, resilient and adaptable.Committees made up of local principals, education experts and community leaders have developed the broad vision for the precinct as well as arrangements for school governance and student transition, after consulting the local community.Victoria University and the Maribyrnong City Council are partners in the precinct development.

New Secondary ModelThe Victorian Government has committed $15million towards the Footscray Learning Precinct. The precinct will include the creation of a new secondary college, with a dedicated senior school campus for Years 10-12 and two junior campuses for students in Years 7-9*. Work has started on a precinct wide master plan. This fact sheet provides an update on the transition model for secondary students, governance and the shared learning framework.

Our first step towards developing the master plan was talking to the community. During two phases of community engagement, we asked for your feedback. The local community said they wanted to see:

· a shared learning framework and strong physical links between the campuses to deliver a smooth transition for students

· students who are well rounded – emotionally intelligent, self-aware and with a social conscience

· a clear transition plan, early communication and consultation with parents, students and families

· the precinct enhanced to maintain community connections and celebrate local history, street art, multiculturalism and wetlands

· a performance space, indoor sports facilities and accessible play spaces

· walking and cycling routes to school and around the precinct.

SHARED LEARNING FRAMEWORKGood design can benefit how students learn and how teachers teach.A shared learning framework is an agreed blueprint of how teaching and learning happens across a group of schools. For example all schools may agree that for students to be informed citizens of the future, they must be informed about local and global issues. Teachers might agree when and how to include real world examples.

The precinct’s shared learning framework will enable:· learning through investigation· learning that is practical and

relevant to the ‘real world’· partnerships beyond the school· collaboration· student voice and empowerment· global citizenship

MASTER PLANThe shared learning framework has played a vital role in helping develop the master plan. We want to ensure good design empowers the teaching and learning environment. An overarching precinct master plan has beendeveloped, and detailed planning for each site is underway. Below is a summary of the current precinct master plan, which is based around three hubs. The master plan is evolving. It will continue to change through the delivery of the precinct.

TRANSITIONWe want to make sure every young person has a smooth transition to the new model. The new secondary model will be operational from 2020. It will require careful and detailed planning to ensure every student has a clearly planned pathway with minimal disruptions. The new model and key steps are broadly outlined below. The final new secondary school will have one senior campus (Years 10-12) and two junior campuses (Years 7-9).*

In 2019, Gilmore College will start changing its enrolments – with no Year 7 or 11 intake. From 2020, Year 7 students will attend a junior campus. The transition will be complete and the new campus model will be fully operational from 2022. Students currently at Footscray City College will complete their secondary school education at the current site.
