ANDREW WHITEMAND O U G R O B E R T S O N C A T C H E S U P W I T H . . .
WHO RECALLS HOW ECSTASY TURNED TO AGONY
Being remembered as the maddest footballer of his era is usually not something people
enjoy but Sturt’s Andrew Whiteman can take the pointed moniker as a compliment.
Nicknamed “Madness” by team-mates Bruce “Beatle” Lennon and Andrew “Spags” Geddes because of his fearless attack on the ball and opponents, Whiteman built a 168-game career on the back of his selfless team play. The mild-mannered deputy principal at Pedare Christian College, Golden Grove, harbours a fierce alter-ego that opponents dreaded but which helped bond a bunch of football journeymen who ended Sturt’s run of eight wooden spoons (1989-1996) then took the Blues to the 1998 grand final and a premiership four years later. Whiteman believes that bond also helped heal those Blues who survived the horrific Bali bombing which occurred shortly after Sturt’s upset 13.14-to-6.9 grand final win over Central District.
The youngest of three boys, Whiteman learned to “dig in from an early age” fueling his reckless approach and
resulting in a fractured skull (spending four days in a darkened room), damaged back and shoulders and countless cuts to his head. Plus a tag nobody will forget.
“It was a bit about how I went about footy and how I enjoyed myself off the field,’’ said Whiteman, twice runner-up club champion (2004-05), four-times State player and named in The Advertiser Team of the Year in 2005, ’07-08. “I even get the odd ‘Madness’ from some of the kids here (Pedare) and staff members, occasionally. Sometimes a kid will say, ‘my dad said to call you Madness’ … well, okay.”
Whiteman’s journey to Unley was not certain for a junior rugby player who initially trained with Norwood but later found he was outside its recruiting zone. So Whiteman, now 41 and married with three girls, Ruby, 10, Scarlett, seven, and Ivy, five, rang Sturt in 1996 as a teenager and asked to train. Named under-19s skipper in 1997, Whiteman’s emergence coincided with Sturt’s revival under Phil Carman, who guided it from a winless season in 1995 to the ’98
grand final. Carman liked the no-frills 181cm, 76kg Whiteman, who was elevated to league ranks by Round 22, 1998. Four games later, he ran on to Football Park among Sturt’s grand final outfit as part of a wild ride that ended a decade later.
“Phil gave me confidence, saying ‘you’re good enough to be here’ which is probably something I struggled with,’’ Whiteman said. “When you’re training with the league squad but playing twos, you think, ‘do I fit in?’ Phil’s legacy is turning the club around from, literally, a basket case to getting people who wanted to come to our club. Credit to Phil, Mick Weatherald (football director) and (GM) Graeme Dunstan because the blokes they got there were fantastic personalities and characters. We wouldn’t have won in 2002 without everything that had gone beforehand.”
Sturt was unlucky to be edged out by nine points by Port Adelaide in ’98 but by the time the “more tactical” North Adelaide Magarey Medallist Brenton Phillips replaced Carman, Sturt was a team of stars with a steely backbone

ready to be polished. On grand final day 2002 Sturt had four Magarey Medallists - Jade Sheedy, Tim Weatherald (joint winners in ’02), Damian Squire (1999-00) and Brodie Atkinson (1997) – and stunning talent including Ben Nelson, Stephen White, Matt Powell, Barnaby French, Marty Mattner, Simon Feast, “Famous” Seamus Maloney, Matthew “Super” Cooper, Brant Chambers and others.
Whiteman, however, considered himself a serial pest who clashed with the toughest and most dangerous, including Central’s James and Chris Gowans and Rick Macgowan, later to coach Sturt (2007-08) and Magpie Jeremy Clayton. “I loved it because I knew they were going to give their all and I would do the same,’’ Whiteman said. “I saw myself as not being able to deliver it on a dime like Jade Sheedy but if I’m able to go and get it for him or stop the bloke who’s harassing Sheeds, that was certainly my role. That was the part I liked … getting in a bit of a scrap or whatever (but) I look back on some of the things I did and I wonder, ‘what I was doing?’. But that was my role, to be that annoying person. I’d press more on some players because I knew they would react but once I got older I’d pick my moments. I realised I didn’t have to be that annoying person all the time.’’
Whiteman said he had “no hesitation’’ believing Sturt would roll Central in the ’02 final despite losing their four previous encounters. His team-mates must have agreed and they whipped the Dogs with a 4.6-to-0.1 opening term and had the game sealed by the final break (11.12 to 5.6)
“Central didn’t hold any fears for us, we had that feeling, it doesn’t make sense to anybody else,’’ he said. “We absolutely destroyed them and we beat them at their own game, one hundred per cent. There was not one
(Sturt) player who took a sideways step. They (Dogs) were trying to start fights and we were winning those as well as getting the ball and putting the score on the board.”
A week later ecstasy turned to deepest despair when a terrorist bombing in a Bali nightclub frequented by Sturt’s celebrating players killed 202 people, including much-loved club official Bob Marshall and talented reserves player Josh Deegan, injuring others. The mere mention of that ill-fated end-of-season trip floods tears to Whiteman’s eyes in raw, overwhelming emotion.
“You couldn’t get more ecstasy than winning a grand final with all your closest mates, then for that to happen was completely tragic,’’ he said. “You couldn’t get through what happened … without your own family and the family of the club. Without the club family it would have been much more difficult, they really threw their arms around us.’’
From tragedy came Whiteman’s most cherished football achievement in winning the Bob Marshall Most Courageous Player Award three times. “I’m proud I won those medals because it was for team play which is
something I prided myself on,’’ Whiteman said. “To have it named in Bob’s honour and to be able to win the (inaugural) one then a couple more is really special, especially because we have a great connection with the Marshall family. Bob was a 70-year-old invited on a footy trip because he was such a good bloke. To see him and his family after we won the grand final are some of my greatest memories.’’
Whiteman says he played until his body said stop. “I’ve always considered myself extremely fortunate to play even one game let alone 168,’’ he said. “I look back and wish I had more, I think we should have had another premiership, if not another couple, with the squad we had.
“Sturt means the world to me for giving me the opportunity to do something I always thought was the most enjoyable thing in the world. It’s provided me with great experiences and lifelong friendships. There’s probably similar clubs but Sturt did run on a shoestring for a while but it was always one-in, all-in and behind the scenes … there were people working their butts off in a different way. I’d do it all again.’’
