THE WA Circus School is emerging as another potential partner for the Fly by Night.

The school has been living on borrowed time in the Old Customs Building on Phillimore Street, deep in the West End, after being told by landlord Artsource to vacate by June 2012.

na le to find an alternative venue it has been given several extensions.

Fly executive director John Reid told the Herald he’d made overtures to the circus school a couple of years ago, but hadn’t heard back.

With WACS workshops usually during the day when the Fly is unused, he says the two “community” organisations could make a great team, particularly as they share many values.

The National Trust’s decision to call for expressions of interest for the heritage-listed drill hall has again piqued his interest in the idea and when the Herald called WACS secretary Ros de Souza this week she was sitting on a text from Mr Reid.

Ms de Souza said she hadn’t yet responded, but after hearing

• from page 1“You only have to look at the

dilapidated Royal George Hotel in East Fremantle to see that the National Trust hasn’t got a great track record in the Fremantle area.”

The Fly has also won support from Something For Kate frontman Paul Dempey. He’s due to play Mt Lawley’s Astor Theatre in early July, and when he heard about the club’s woes he booked a show.

IT’S currently “horror country” for cyclists, but Fremantle two-wheeled lobbyist Bug (Bicycle Users Group) wants Carrington Street to become a major thoroughfare.

Bug has been mapping a network of bike routes into and through Fremantle and last weekend rode down Carrington, which it wants to be one of three north/south routes.

Convenor Rob Delves says Carrington Street needs a lot of attention to make it safe for cyclists, particularly around the intersection with South Street where narrow lanes and a steep hill make jostling with cars a hazard.

The group will submit plans to Fremantle council for the next update of its bike network, but Mr Delves says it’s prepared to be patient.

Fellow member Paul Loring says one option is to put the street’s powerlines

about his interest said the idea was worth looking into.

The organisations will have to move fast, as Ms de Souza says the school is undergoing due diligence on three potential properties and is expecting to make a decision by the end of the month.

“I can’t really say anything about them, but one of them is external to Fremantle and the other two are internal.” The Herald understands one is the old Bond Store at the end of the old tra c ridge.

Ms de Souza says WACS is going strong at the moment,

with a new board that includes businesswoman Kerry Maddestra. “The focus is going to be a game-changer and we’re looking at being able to stand on our own two feet.”

She says the community has rallied behind the organisation, particularly after the closure of Deckchair and Kulcha. The school recently organised three fundraisers and despite the $100 tickets they were all packed. Some folk attended all three performances, the last at the J-Shed last Sunday.

“People know we’re valuable,” Ms de Souza said.

“I learned recently that the future of the Fly By Night Musicians’ club in Fremantle is in doubt and whilst I dearly hope that the current discussions will resolve in favour of the club renewing its lease and remaining open as the world-class venue that it has been for thirty-odd years, I do not want to miss the opportunity to play in one of my absolute favourite venues for what may be the last time,” he emailed the Fly.

underground, as that would open up enough room to install a i e lane without affecting car lane widths. The group is also discussing the merits of turning the footpath into a dual-use lane.

Another north/south route explored last weekend was

Amherst Street through to Curedale Street.

“We recognise that certain main roads such as Leach Highway and Stock Road are not appropriate for bikes and therefore we are attempting to create a network of parallel routes that provide direct, safe connection between all the main activity centres for bike riders,” Mr Delves says.

The pair praise the council for giving bikes the jump over cars when turning onto Carrington from Lefroy Road. Green tarmac beyond the white “stop” line lets cyclists move to the front of the queue to turn left, right or go straight ahead (previously only an option for pedestrians). They say this style of tra c management is widespread in other cycling-friendly cities and they expect more in Freo in the future.

They’re heading off to explore North Fremantle’s cycle routes on their next ride and are looking for input from as many cyclists as possible. Email [email protected].

VOLUNTEERS have described as “digusting” Melville council’s decision to include them as a risk to the city, based on their potential to be politically active.

Members from the Friends of Booragoon and Blue Gum Lakes regard Tuesday’s vote as an attempt to silence their criticism of the way the council manages its environmental responsibilities.

Already, the council has “sacked” one veteran volunteer, Gavin Waugh, who’d criticised the council’s wetlands management (Melville City Herald, June 14, 2014). He’s been told he’s no longer allowed to identify himself as a council volunteer.

AlienatedDuring debate Tuesday on

the recommendation to include volunteer groups as a risk, former mayor June Barton said the council’s approach had “alienated” volunteers, without whom “this city would have gone under”.

e couldn’t afford to do the things volunteers are doing,” the veteran Bicton-Attadale ward councillor told colleagues.

Cr Susanne Taylor-Rees asked where the idea had come from to identify volunteers as a risk category.

Council CEO Shayne Silcox said there were “statewide examples” of the decisions of other councils eing influenced by political volunteer groups. However, he failed to provide any examples either on the night or following subsequent questioning.

Cr Duncan Macphail seemed to channel former US defense secretary Donald Rumsfeld with warnings about ignoring “knowns” and “unknowns”, before mentioning the twin towers attacks on 9/11 to

drive home a point we weren’t entirely sure of, except that it was supportive of the recommendation.

Only Crs Barton, Taylor-Rees and Nick Pazolli opposed the recommendation.

“This is providing a great deal more damage to the reputation of council than anything that any volunteer group may or had done,” Cr Pazolli noted.

Council declares volunteers a ‘risk’

He says the council is sending the wrong signal to volunteers that, “it is worried they may be a risk to the council’s objectives and reputation”.

Dr Silcox said he has a “responsibility to identify risks”.

“If someone wished to use the wrong mechanisms for political purposes or inappropriate work practices ... there is a potential liability, I make no apologies for that.”

• Fearing local community volunteer groups may become

politically active and criticise council

policies, Melville council has moved to declare them a

‘strategic risk’.

No apologies: CEO

Shabby, hold the chicI HAVE been wandering around Fremantle the last couple of days and it appears to me nothing has been done since my last letter months ago bemoaning the sad appearance of the place.

The old Australia Hotel, a lovely old building and one that disembarking liner passengers see first, loo s li e it has not had a coat of paint sine 1988 at least.

The so-called Ocean Terminal is a museum piece.

The usual heritage buildings, from the old police station and the rows of warders’ cottages are more shabby

Stop the raceI WAS disgusted and disappointed to read in Tuesday’s West about racist comments made in junior football that started an all-in brawl.

It all starts at the top: you can blame the AFL for having the indigenous round, also for sending an all-indigenous team to Ireland.

You will notice as I have the slurs’ start at that time of the year.

I am an 82-year-old Western Australian and have accepted that Australia is multicultural.

As a 16-year-old boy I lived in a boarding house in Albany. My two room mates were part-Aboriginal and there was never a racist comment by me nor any other lodger in the boarding house.

We all had respect for each other. My advice is for the AFL to get

rid of the indigenous round and to make no comment of the origin of our players.

You are all Aussie citizens and footballers.

Trust a threat to cultural heritageI AM a Western Australian living in Sydney and last week, while staying with friends in East

remantle, was horrified to read of the National Trust’s plans to open the lease of the artillery drill hall to public expressions of interest (Herald, June 17, 2014).

I also read that National Trust CEO Tom Perrigo suggested this was necessary as part of the Trust’s good governance. The Trust’s vision is (according to its website) that the Trust “…will be the pre-eminent independent organisation promoting the conservation and interpretation of Western Australias (sic) heritage and educating the community about the use of cultural heritage (historic, natural and indigenous) for the long-term social, economic and environmental enefit of the community”.

The Fly By Night Musicians’ Club is an important part of the cultural environment of Fremantle, and surrounds. It can’t simply be seen as a tenant in a heritage building anymore. The Fly is part of the city’s cultural heritage fabric.

So much so that I’d suggest that were any other organisation contemplating the action which the National Trust has initiated, the community would rightfully expect that an organisation like the National Trust to fight for the preservation of such a significant piece of the city’s cultural heritage.

Tom Perrigo is almost right when he says, “if you did not do this, then someone would say, ‘why did you give them that building’”. But what I’m wondering is, “why did we give the building to the National Trust?”.

By Jiminy!HELLO there. I love reading your paper. It is very interesting.

I would very much appreciate it if you could publish this photo of the Freo Grasshoppers in your paper. The band is led by Dee Silva, backed by Junior D’Silva and Max. They entertain people at the Freo Markets on Saturdays and at the National Friday nights.

They are local people who play terrific music for all and deserve some support.

They are such a great inspiration for people who love to sing along.

creation of a local branch of the Refugee Rights Action Network.

That’s a fine thing, ut isn’t it time he focussed on something he’s wanted to do for years and lead council negotiations on adopting employment targets for people with disabilities?

The council has ensured the more likely initiative of employment quotas for Aboriginals has occurred, something it is proud of, even if the target is low.

However, with the National Disability Insurance Scheme coming, shouldn’t Cr Wainwright, possibly the most altruistic councillor I’ve come across, begin the long journey to ensure the City of Fremantle is a truly equal opportunity employer?

It’s not going to happen by itself, but the reality is the money is coming, along with additional carers and equipment to help close another gap in our society.

We need to be ready to welcome many more people with disabilities in to the workplace, but that journey needs to start now.

AS an audience member at performances and events at the Fremantle

drill hall, managed by the Fly by Night Musicians’ Club since the days of the America’s Cup, and a board member of the club’s constituent company in the late ‘80s through to the mid-‘90s I am troubled by several matters raised in the Herald’s article, “Sunset bids for the Fly”, (June 14, 2014) concerning the lease arrangements for the hall which is owned by the National Trust WA.

First, process. National Trust CEO Tom Perrigo says new governance rules require it to seek expressions of interest in relation to any new leases of Trust property, and in a letter to the Fly’s board he refers to it as a “statutory obligation”. Yet, there is nothing in the Act creating the Trust or on its website which refers to this obligation, or any newly created procedural requirement in leasing or renewing leases of Trust properties.

Mr Perrigo is also quoted that the process is “good governance and transparency” and he also refers to a lessee who can offer the best “social values” to the building and the community.

These are mixed messages.I’d like Mr Perrigo to tell me

whether the new procedures have been applied to other Trust properties in WA, with examples, and whether the “obligation” precedes any inquiries by Sunset Events about the possibility of it taking over the lease after its expiration on September 11 this year.

The Herald article refers to a meeting between Mr Greg Leaver, a director of the public company which is the lessee of the drill hall, a representative of Sunset Music (a proprietary limited company that see s to ma e profit for its directors as a promoter of music and other events) and the mayor of Fremantle.

I stand to be corrected, but quoted comments by the manager of the Fly suggest Mr Leaver did not have the authority of his board

FORMER Fly By Night Musicians’ Club director TONY WILSON is troubled by the Herald’s revelation last weekend that Sunset Events

has its eyes on the artillery drill hall. In this week’s THINKING ALLOWED Mr Wilson, the father of deputy mayor Josh Wilson, discusses his concerns.

to commence any discussions or negotiations about the lease renewal (which had been, to my knowledge, the subject of correspondence between the Trust and Fly commencing earlier this year).

In my opinion, Mr Leaver, without further explanation, has a potential conflict of interest in regard to his duties and responsibilities as a director of a public company under the corporations act.

I am aware of a letter written by the mayor to the Trust because I had discussed the issue of the lease renewal four weeks ago with my son, Josh Wilson, the deputy mayor. I did so after receiving a phone call asking for my legal opinion about the Trust’s process in relation to the lease renewal.

NaivetyI haven’t seen a copy of

that letter but I am assuming it set out the important cultural contri ution and significance of the Fly’s operations over 28 years to the Fremantle community, particularly in the context of the closure of Kulcha and Deckchair Theatre. Part of the mayor’s letter, quoted by the Herald, suggested that one outcome of the meeting at X-Wray cafe was the possibility of a “partnership” between Sunset and the Fly.

In my opinion this displays an unbelievable naivety and lack of nous on behalf of the mayor.

Sunset’s view of such a partnership appears to be: “we’ll take over the lease and give you a sop. You can run small events in the Fly Trap.”

What the mayor needs to tell me is whether this “partnership” proposition is driven by the need to placate Sunset over the position taken by the council towards Sunset’s J-Shed application.

We now hear that Sunset will promote three or four performances each week at the

ly with the enefit of e isting facilities built up over 28 years, the brand, the liquor licence and access to extensive parking available in the city’s car park across the road.

very different proposition from the permitted 12-15 performances annually at J-Shed and the expenditure of a considerable amount to spend on that building to bring it into compliance with numerous regulatory requirements.

Finally, everyone interested in this issue needs to understand the difference etween the ly and Sunset as legal entities.

The Fly is run by a special purpose public company (also known as a company limited by guarantee , it’s a not-for-profit organisation like most arts and cultural organisations.

In return for special exemptions—from income tax for example—and in recognition of its cultural and community contri utions and significance (formerly called a charity), it cannot distri ute any profits it makes to any of its members, nor anybody else.

Sunset, by comparison, is a profit-ma ing machine for its directors. It works on risk and margins as any entrepreneur or any commercial organisation does. Its objects are to make money for its directors; any contribution to the cultural and economic fabric of Fremantle is secondary.

The mayor should explain in this conte t what real enefit the community has received from the Blues and Roots festivals staged annually on council property so we can all assess Sunset’s motives and the enefits it brings to Fremantle. Do we want another Metropolis operating in Fremantle? What’s next: A Sunset takeover of concerts and performances of the Fremantle Arts Centre?

The barbarians are at the gates. We should unite to drive them back into the sunset.

High St HwyI MUST dispute the notion the widening of High Street has been hijacked by disinterested parties (“Wide road blessing,” Herald, June 7, 2014). It has been put before precinct meetings numerous times, as I understand it, and received a mixed but mostly negative response.

It’s hard to conceive of a massive sweep through that terrain without a Servetus Street/ West Coast Hwy style canyon for some of its length. Only this time six lanes instead of four. A vast river of bitumen even without that. It has to actually be built and it won’t be quick.

There’s plenty of smaller options that would address most safety matters: pedestrian crossings, a gentler bend on the intersection at Stirling Hwy, etc. But that’s not what this plan is at all about. It’s those larger goals that are holding up addressing those problems as all-or-nothing options are what get offered.

Yeah, netball wants more parking. But really, who doesn’t? I’d suggest maybe not driving to netball. I know that’s kind of Perth heresy to say such things.

Murray ChristianForrest St, Fremantle

and dilapidated than ever, the mall is carpeted with unswept leaves (do we not have mechanical street sweepers these days?) and detritus of fast-food outlets, loads of empty shops, the dreary monstrosity of the old Myer building and so the list goes on.

Is the council blind? Or does it just not care a out anything ut profit-making ventures? Cycle-paths and skate parks are worthy additions but hardly aesthetic. Having priced out the working classes that made Freo such a vibrant place and turned the West End over to Notre Dame, apartment developers and the concomitant yuppies, surely there is enough cash somewhere to save some of the city’s heritage and make the place a shade more visually attractive to visitors.

Fremantle College neededHIGH schools in Fremantle are suddenly on the political agenda as the state government looks to rationalise its facilities and resources. The community group High School Options for Fremantle has been lobbying for a simple solution: open up John Curtin College of the Arts as a general high school to all Fremantle students, rather than just those in its speciality arts programs.

The state government proposal that the City of Fremantle expands southwards and eastwards into a Greater Fremantle municipality with more than 100,000 people rather than the present 30,000 means we should look for a much bigger and better solution.

Fremantle needs a new school—let’s call it Fremantle College. And it needs to be so good that many parents who have taken their children into the private system will think again.

Fremantle College needs to be so good it will attract people to live and invest here in many of the new residential

housing projects the council is providing. The departmental guideline for a

viable high school is 1450 students. John Curtin will achieve close to that next year. This leaves South Fremantle and Hamilton Senior High Schools with a combined total of 770 students at present. With year sevens shifting to high schools in 2015 this will make a total of around 1000. The case for amalgamation into one regional Fremantle general high school is pretty clear.

To attract more students Fremantle College will require:

• a gifted and talented academic program in humanities and sciences. South Fremantle SHS had such a program until 1998 and, once it was transferred to Willetton SHS, meant the Willetton catchment became a major residential attraction for people;

• accommodation for country students on the Fremantle College campus. This will both help the school and catalyse the provision of other residences, shops and general revitalisation of the area around the school. This should be a non-government funded initiative;

• greater resourcing of Fremantle College education specialties that feed directly back into the local industries: marine, sustainability, music, IT, and other local small businesses with a Freo flavour

• ensuring Fremantle College becomes a model school of the future with features such as carbon-neutral status, a school vegetable garden feeding the canteen, renewable energy demonstrations of solar, wind and geothermal…all built into the curriculum and available for the community to access;

creation of mutually eneficial lin s between Fremantle College and local universities wherein gifted students are involved with high-level projects and the universities can invest in research with the students and staff.

This vision recognises the synergies created when academic and vocational options co-exist in the same school.

A major advantage of the growth in numbers will be extra support services. For example, a much bigger range will

be available for students with intellectual and physical disabilities, who are hearing and visually impaired, suffering autism or having other special needs.

In short, as we begin to think of Fremantle as a much bigger catchment we need to think of our high school needs in a similar way. If it is created as planned the City of Greater Fremantle will have many options for improving services, education needs to be one of them.

A number of competing sites exist but in my opinion there is only one one that fulfills the potential outlined a ove this site is relatively inexpensive, well located for public transport, with good buildings and space to expand where a proud new Fremantle College could be immediately created.

BEACONSFIELD eco-guru Shani Graham has scored a major coup for Fremantle, enticing a founder of permaculture to head to the port city for a conference and workshop.

David Holmgren coined the term permaculture with his university tutor Bill Mollison in Tasmania in the s and wrote the su ect’s first paper.

Permaculture (permanent agriculture) has since become a global phenomenon and two years ago US president Barack Obama awarded the University of Massachusetts’ permaculture initiative his country’s highest sustainability award.

Ms Graham says it was Mr Holmgren’s work which inspired her and partner Tim Darby’s eco-B&B Painted Fish in South Fremantle, which in itself inspired the highly successful Hulbert Street Sustainability Fiesta.

She’d come across his work at a talk about peak oil at UWA in 2006. Before that she’d had little idea about either peak oil or permaculture, “a movement I thought mostly had to do with raising animals in the country, using their poo to grow food”. “David’s talk shared how we could use permaculture principles as city dwellers.”

Ms Graham and Mr Darby have moved from outh reo to eaconsfield and their passion for

sustainability is running riot. The new house looks like a war zone; they have

pretty much stripped the yard back to limestone cap rock (and even beyond) to build gardens, chook runs and install water tanks. Inside, they’re carving up the house into three apartments to show there’s another way to increase density, other than McMansions on tiny lots.

Ms Graham says she’d set her sights on adding Mr Holmgren to a list of green revolutionaries she’d already coaxed to Fremantle, including Dr Mollison, Richard Heinberg and Peter Cundall.

He’d always resisted, leaving the spreading of the permaculture message to Dr Mollison while he furthered research on the family farm.

But his friendship with radical economist icole oss finally convinced him to head west

(Foss is locked into the conference, which is on Sunday July 6 from 10am to 4pm at the Fremantle Town Hall)

Mr Holmgren’s workshop will be on Tuesday July 8 from 6-9pm at the reception room at the council’s HQ. For more info and bookings, contact [email protected].

MELVILLE city council has voted for a new five-year contract worth up to $1.75 million for CEO Shayne Silcox.

The former Belmont and Nedlands CEO joined Melville in 2008, his five-year contract renewed in 2011 at $319,485 a year, including a car and super.

The new contract reportedly ups that by $30,000 a year, taking Dr Silcox’s package to $6730 a week.

UNELECTED. Unrepresentative. Unaccountable. Are we talking Syria, perhaps?

Ukrainian separatists? FIFA lobbyists, even? No. Sadly, we’re talking much closer to home.

They come in the form of a five-person panel—three government-appointed “experts”, and two local council representatives.

They’re called Development Assessment Panels, or DAPs and, since 2011, they’ve been making the big decisions about multi-million-dollar property developments that affect the lives of WA communities.

No-one elects them, and, with a 3-2 bias in favour of appointed “experts”, they do not represent local residents’ interests. If you question their decisions, you get stonewalled, and the state planning minister (who introduced them) says they are a judicial panel, so he can’t intervene, but assures you they “followed due process”.

So let’s get this straight: we’ve got millions of dollars at stake, decisions being made by an unelected panel with the discretionary powers to effectively decide whatever they like, and they don’t have to explain themselves – not even to the minister. And there’s no right of appeal. And that’s “due process”.

No community can rest easy. Think I’m exaggerating? Try this on for size.

In March this year, the Metro Central approved a massive loc of flats to

be built at 94 Kitchener Rd, Alfred Cove. Eighty-four dwellings, three storeys high, 183 carbays, six housing blocks long, unbroken at any point, all on a back street, slap-bang in the middle of a low-density suburb, totally out of character with the locality and against key requirements of the local planning scheme.

In approving this, the DAP went against the recommendation of the

ity of elville’s planning o ce to refuse the application, AND against the overwhelming vote of the city’s councillors, AND against a tide of protest from the local community (111 letters and two petitions totalling more than 1000 signatures).

The site at 94 Kitchener Road is, by law, zoned R40, which means development there can have a ma imum flat-roofed height of nine metres. The approved development is more than two metres above that maximum, and jams in more than triple the normal density, weighing in at over R100. That’s a high-end, high-density development.

Add to this that the rest of the suburb is zoned just R20—single dwellings, one or two storeys only—and you have, in a nutshell, the reasons the council’s planning o ce recommended refusal, and why our councillors and residents agreed.

This is why our local MPs also agree. But the DAP ignored everyone. Sorry,

not quite everyone. The DAP didn’t ignore the one and only voice raised in favour of the proposal—the developer’s.

Yet, in order to listen to that one voice, and approve the development, the DAP ignored all others and saw fit to e ercise its discretionary powers to an extraordinary degree, massively bypassing the basic planning requirements which legally apply to the site. Surely, it would need to demonstrate some pretty extraordinary reasons to back that up, right?

We wrote to the DAP more than a month ago for an explanation. Total silence. We are simply told, “due process was followed”. No right of appeal.

It may come as little surprise then to learn that, according to an internal review conducted last September, the DAP system received the thumbs-up from almost 100 per cent of development industry respondents. Less than 10 per cent of local councils concurred.

Unelected by the people, unrepresentative of the people, and unaccountable to the people, it is deeply disturbing that a democratically elected government minister in one of the world’s leading democracies should be comfortable with such a process.

For the people of a mature democracy to have faith in their decision-making systems, it is not enough to be told that correct, fair and just decisions are being made. They must also be seen to be made. That requires “transparency of process”, which in the case of DAPs should require them to publish their reasons for approving developments, especially when discretionary powers are wielded in favour of grossly non-compliant projects, against the wishes of the people.

hen millions in profits are also part of the mix (as they always are with DAP applications), that need for transparency and accountability is even more crucial.

“Due process” may well have been followed, but that does not, in and of itself, validate the quality of DAP decisions.

nd if that is the sole response offered to explain such outrageously poor decisions as this, then this process needs to have a very bright light shone on it.

The sooner that happens, the better it will be for all of us.

GEOFF PEARSON is spokesperson for the Striker Balance! Community Action Group that for more than a year has been fighting the approval of a high-density project in

Kitchener Road, Alfred Cove. Geoff and his family have been local residents for more than 25 years and their home in Mullings Way is one of 20 that will be immediately overlooked by the development. Striker Balance has two 3600-signature petitions before state parliament requesting the DAP’s approval, and the whole DAP system, be thoroughly investigated.

A PASSION rekindled after 17 years apart was sealed with a romantic trip to Morocco – which led to Saharan Daze a new Moroccan import business in Fremantle.Already in the import/export business before reconnecting with wife Freya, Adrian Duignan knew a bit about what would sell back home.

“We fell in love with everything in Morocco, and took a chance bringing things back to test the water,” Freya Duignan says. “We did really well…and took the plunge with a 40 foot container.”The container, packed with an eye popping assortment of goods, arrived in port last week. The carefully unloaded cache will be on sale at Saharan Daze, at Many 6160 in the old Myer Building off Fremantle’s Kings Square Friday, Saturday and Sunday during June.

There’s a dazzling collection of hand crafted lanterns, home wares, ceramics, leather pouffes and bags, kilim rugs and cushions, antique tiles, tajines, jewellery and accessories, including the gorgeous kilim boots - one of the hottest fashion items in Europe at the moment. There’s a Moroccan version of the chiminea fi re that doubles as a patio heater – or a pizza oven. And a spectacular hand-made brass bath, made by a family the Duignans became friends with in Morocco.“The baths are expensive, but real show stoppers,” Adrian says. The Duignans have made a number of friends in the short time they’ve been importing from Morocco, including a family that makes the handcrafted lanterns they sell. “Everything is ethically sourced, there’s no child

labour,” Freya says. Saharan Daze will also be at the Perth Homes Show, at the Convention Centre, August 8–10, after being invited to take part.“They invite people with interesting home wares and

home fi ttings,” Freya says.Around 15–20,000 people a day are expected to pass through the turnstile, with more than $10 million turnover over the three days.

But in the meantime get in fi rst and head down to the old Myer building and check it out

for yourselves.Or if you fi nd yourself in Yallingup the weekend of June 28 and 29 check out Saharan Daze at the Pop Up Collaborative at the Yallingup Town Hall.“If you are looking to buy a unique gift for a loved one, embellish your home with exotic home wares or bathe like a king, Saharan Daze offers all this and more,” Adrian says.

MELVILLE city councillor Nick Pazolli has described the past 12 months as an “annus horribilis” in the latest council newsletter, Mosaic.

He was critical of the Kitchener Road development and council code of conduct, which he described as “restrictive”. His article was accompanied by a extraordinary “rider” which effectively served as the ity’s reply to the issues r a olli raised.

“While comments were not usually placed under councillor articles, notes had een placed under r a olli’s feature to clarify any misconceptions and inaccuracies in the article, O hayne Silcox told the Herald. “And importantly to protect r a olli from any reach of the city’s code of conduct for elected members.”

r a olli plans to as uestions in Budget talks about the cost of Mosaic, a glossy 24-page brochure delivered to local letterboxes. Published four times a year the Herald understands it costs about $70,000 a year—$56,000 to design and print and $13,000 to distribute.

But last week vegandals took it a step further, branding him a murderer with a big anti-meat protest sprayed across the side of his arrington treet utchery.

Mr Fisher, who bought the business four years ago, says he doesn’t thin he was especially singled out as he was told of other damage the area at the same time.

The Kiosk Fremantle is celebrating its first birthday. With a philosophy of family, friends, fun and fantastic food, The Kiosk has been warmly received by the local community. The Freo cafe is the southern cousin to the original Kiosk in Floreat, so it’s safe to say owner Stefano Rossi is onto a winning formula. The Kiosk prides itself on using only the freshest, high quality produce. All sauces are made in house and the bread is sourced from an artisan bakery. Plus there’s plenty of gluten free and vegetarian options.

Long term manager Mel has worked for the three previous owners and says the place has never been as good. Bright new d cor, an unbeatable riverside location and delicious food

keeps diners coming back for more. The north-facing verandah is the perfect spot to soak up the winter sun while enjoying a wholesome brekky or superb coffee - there’s no better way to start the day Whichever way you like your breakfast, you’re sure to find something you love. From the Full On Breakfast, which as the name suggests has the lot, to lighter options such as the Krunch and Fruit - house made granola with in season fruit and yogurt. The Potato Cake with kale and poached egg is a real winner too.

Mains are available from 12 noon. Be sure to check out the specials board for the chef’s latest winter warmers. At the moment you can’t go wrong with the Braised Beef in Shiraz Sauce & Pumpkin Puree. The Black Ink Pasta

with scallops, asparagus and prawns also hits the spot. The Kiosk gourmet burgers are legendary. Popular choices include The Hot Shot - prime beef pattie, tomato, aioli and house made chilli jam or the Fricken Chicken - free range grilled chicken with pesto, avocado, tomato and aioli. And with names like these who could resist?

The human body is truly amazing. The number of functions it performs at any given moment to keep us in optimal health is mind boggling. Sometimes we can take our good health for granted and forget what a precious asset it is. A busy lifestyle, poor diet, stress, lack of exercise and inadequate sleep can put the body out of balance and lead to health problems. Taking a preventative approach to your

wellbeing can be an e ective way to head o any potential health scares and ensure good health for life.

But what happens if you look after yourself but still feel unwell? There may be other factors at work preventing you from reaching peak health. Lee Rieniets, director of local company Realsearch,

Local naturopath empowers patients with health report

believes that monitoring your own health will become more important in years to come. As the founder of Rener Health Centres, Lee has spent the past 56 years as a scientist, biochemist and naturopath researching the human body. He is passionate about educating and empowering

people to take control of their own health.

During his many years in the health eld, Lee devised a simple health questionnaire, which provides patients with a detailed and easy to understand health assessment. He is now o ering this service to the wider community.

“This is a proven, common sense way of looking at your

health,” said Lee. “I can either email or mail the questionnaire to you. Once completed, please return it for analysis. Please note due to the volume of calls our practitioners are currently receiving, there may be a waiting period of up to 2 weeks for your test results,” he added.

Lee has observed the worrying increase of many illnesses, in particular auto-immune diseases. He believes the critical factor to improve worldwide health is water quality. Our bodies consist of 80% water, so it stands to reason that having access to a clean water supply is essential for optimum health. The problem is that even though around 70% of the earth is covered by water, only three tenths of 1% is useable for humans to drink. And of this amount, approximately 80% of this water is contaminated.

STEPPING stones lead across a tranquil pond to an even more

tranquil outdoor “room” at this Gunbower Road, Mt Pleasant home.

It’s easy to imagine relaxing here, lulled by the gentle trickle of the nearby wall-sized water feature, as time drifts off. Or dining with friends in this protected year-round space—just don’t overdo the port or you may get a dunking negotiating the stepping stones.

There’s a plunge pool/spa at the opposite end and, according to the vendor, friends’ littlies love to splash in the shallow “river” connecting pool and patio—a delightful but unintended use.

Vast spacesDesigned and built by the

vendors every one of the many and vast spaces of this home are used, even the formal lounge at the front, guarded by soaring columns.

Step into spacious open-plan living/dining/kitchen and you can really see what the vendor meant when she said the home is user-friendly.

Forming an L-shape across the rear of the home the openness flows on, through a massive wall of glass, to the timber deck and water feature giving a sense of even more

spaciousness.With its golden timbered

floor and floor-to-ceiling glass you can rest assured this is a light-filled space.

The kitchen is huge, with a walk-in pantry and beautiful, soft-fawn caesarstone tops, including a spacious island bench, and soft timber cupboards and drawers.

While the grown-ups converse over coffee in the generous dining area, or either of the alfresco areas, the kids can watch movies in the nearby theatre room.

Beautiful wrought iron stairs sweep up to second level where you’ll find four of the five bedrooms.

The main is a huge affair,

with doors to a balcony that takes in city and river views, and the spa in the massive ensuite offers a similar vista.

The fifth bedroom is on the ground floor and forms a guest wing, with space for a couch, and with its own bathroom.

This is an imposing home on 500sqm, immaculate inside and out and close to shops and cafes, while the river foreshore is a short walk away.

NOW is a great time to insulate your home – and you might not have to pay a cent towards it.

e Australian Government is providing a rebate of up to $1600 for the installation of ceiling insulation in homes built before 2003 (and which aren’t already insulated).

ARIES (Mar 21 – Apr 20)Saturn is slowing you down. Not in such a way that it gets your hackles up – but

in such a way as you know you have to pay more attention to what you are doing. Unless you do, you are going to miss the opportunity that is right before your eyes. Take heed of the wise voice within.

TAURUS (Apr 21 – May 20)Lift your eyes from all the things you are doing. Look up at the world around you.

This shift of gaze is important. Though you are enjoying what you are doing, there’s a point comes when narrowness of focus is counterproductive. Extend your sense of beauty, love and justice.

GEMINI (May 21 – June 21) Mercury is at the tail end of Gemini. Whilst here, his energy is likely to

flare up. It is best to have your wits about you, lest you be tricked out of the real significance of his intriguing presence. To conquer the tricksterish nature of Mercury, one must call on him to gift us genuine insight.

CANCER (June 22 – Jul 22)The Sun is transitioning from Gemini to Cancer – from the world of excited

thinking, to the world of warm feeling. This is the perfect time to put aside your shield, lay down all your defence mechanisms and be vulnerable to all that the universe is gifting you. Move towards beauty.

LEO (Jul 23 – Aug 22)As all the planets shuffle round and trade places, so you are biding your

time. Somewhere you know that now is for acting quietly, to lay foundations. With the North Node of the Moon now in Libra, the general existential drift is towards discovering what genuine justice and beauty is.

VIRGO (Aug 23 – Sept 22)With Mercury staying put, as the Sun goes into Cancer, you are invited to be very

curious about your feelings. If you approach with wonder, so they will volunteer their secrets to you. The moment you try to over-think them, they will pack up their bags and go home. Be childlike.

LIBRA (Sept 23 – Oct 23)Forcing things is just not going to work. Though you may have the most noble

ideas under your hat, and be authentically motivated to get them into practice, it is not possible to go against the whims of existence. Take your journey of unfolding slowly. Do not be a superficial tourist.

SCORPIO (Oct 24 – Nov 21)There is a grand trine, or a great current, flowing between Saturn,

Jupiter and Chiron. These are three powerful planets and they are all in water signs. Deep emotions are moving – and they are likely to be moving you. Uranus is nudging you from Aries to change. Rattle your cage.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 – Dec 21)When choosing between action and inaction, it is your emotions and feelings

that will guide you. They aren’t the same thing. Emotions can be impulsive and reactive. Feelings are more quiet, responsive and silent. The moment you are on song, waves of support will come your way.

CAPRICORN (Dec 22 – Jan 19)The more precarious our position is, the more carefully we have to act. It

is becoming ever clearer that we are indeed in a precarious situation. Panic isn’t going to help. Neither is going back to what worked in another era. Innovation must come. Know this, and keep it grounded.

AQUARIUS (Jan 20 – Feb 18)It takes a lot of courage to trust. Life is asking you to do just this – trust. Trust demands

that we have faith in the intelligence and sensitivity of others. It demands that we have faith in the fact that the same consciousness that is in us, is in them. Big wheels are turning. Surf the change.

PISCES (Feb 19 – Mar 20)Neptune is un-aspected in Pisces. Neptune is like a great big mystic

witness, observing the whole grand play of our dance of spectacular illusion. He is your planet. He is the planet playing your signature tune. Keep moving towards more manifest beauty and peace – watchfully.
