• Making a phone call: To call your friend, you have to

enter the phone number correctly. That is a procedure. If you don’t follow it, you won’t get your friend on the phone. You may get a stranger, or the call may not connect at all.• Stop Lights: Drivers must follow many

procedures. When you come to a red light, you must STOP. If you do not follow that procedure, an accident may happen or you may get a ticket from a police officer.• What is the procedure for making a

peanut butter and jelly sandwich?• What is the procedure for brushing your

teeth?

Why Should We Follow Procedures

at School? • Let’s make an anchor chart of

reasons we should follow procedures at school.

• Then we’ll discuss several procedures on the next slides that we will be following this year!

• If you arrive at school before 7:30 a.m. you should go to the lunchroom.

• After 7:30 you can come to our hall.

Waiting in the Hall

before school starts• Sit quietly with your back to the wall, your legs criss-cross, and your backpack in front of you.

• You are to sit next to our classroom door on either side.

• You must try to go to the restroom when the teacher on hall duty calls your grade level.

Read an AR book while you wait.

Waiting in the Hall

in between classes• Line up in a single-file line on the right side of Mrs. Brown’s door. Do not get out of line without permission from a teacher. Do not try to save a spot for a friend to get next to you in line.

• Stand two tiles away from the wall. Keep your hands, feet, backpack, and any other objects

off the wall and off each other.• Wait for Mrs. Brown to come to the

door to greet you.• ABSOLUTELY NO TALKING OR MAKING

NOISE OF ANY KIND. We do not want to disturb students in other classes who are trying to learn.

• Always walk when coming in the classroom. • Change your attendance and then go straight

to your seat.• There should be NO TALKING OR MAKING

NOISES.• Immediately take out the needed materials

(listed on the board) and get to work on your bellwork.

• Do not come up to the teacher to ask anything. There will be a chance to ask questions later.

Attendance Boards• The first thing you will do when you enter the

classroom each day is change your attendance. This is done on the magnetic Attendance Boards near my desk. • Only one person at a time may change theirmagnet. Wait patiently in line until it is your turn.• Stand far enough back from the person in

front of you so that you do not block them from being able to move away from the board when they are finished. • It should take no more than 3 seconds to

move your magnet. • DO NOT MOVE ANYONE’S MAGNET BUT YOUR OWN.• You move your magnet from the “Absent”

sectionat the top to the “Present” section at the bottom. • Keep the magnets lined up neatly in

numerical order.

• Bellwork will come in various forms. You may have a worksheet, a prompt on the board, or some other activity to complete.

• You are to work on bellwork silently while Mrs. Brown takes care of various duties required of her before the lesson begins.

• If you finish your bellwork before it is time for the lesson to begin, quietly read your AR book.

• This not a time for talking or moving around the room.

Pencil Management• You will sharpen pencils in your homeroom

class. Your homeroom teacher will let you know when to do this. In Mrs. Brown’s homeroom, we sharpen pencils at the end of the day so they are ready to go the next morning.

• You should have at least 5 sharpened pencils with you when you come to class. • I have pencil bins that say “Ready to Write” and “Sharpen Please”. If all of your pencils break during class, quietly signal to me and ask if you can go exchange your pencil for a sharpened one. Be sure to return my pencil to the bin when the class is over. If it is not returned, you will not be able to borrow another one!

Supplies

• You are expected to have all the needed supplies for class every day without having to go back to your homeroom class to get something! This means you must be responsible to keep up with your things. • You should keep 5 sharpened pencils,

sharpenedcolored pencils, scissors, and glue in your pencil pouch at all times. • You should always have extra paper on hand.• You will be told ahead of time if you will needmaterials that you do not normally have with you.

I am a very organized person, so if you would like

me to help you get organized, just ask. I’ll

be glad to help you.

Sign Language Signals

• We will be using several signs from American Sign Language in my classroom. They will be used to ask for water, the bathroom, a classroom library book, and more. • As you can see, we have the sign language

alphabet up on the wall in the front of the room. You can use this to learn how to fingerspell words.

• I will now show you the main signs we will be using on another PowerPoint.

• During lessons, you are expected to sit up straight, face the teacher, and participate!

• What does it mean to participate? It means, you are actively listening, focused on what we are working on, and sharing your thinking with the class. You are engaged and involved in the lesson.

• Raise your hand for permission to speak. Do not blurt out or interrupt another speaker, including the teacher!

What to Do During Lessons

Getting Your Attention

Phrases and Signals I Will Use

When you are working or talking and I want your attention, there are a few different things I

might do.1. Stand in the front of the room with my hand

raised.2. Ring a bell. 3. Say an attention getter which you will

respond to. I have several! I will teach them all to you so you will know what to say when you respond. For example, if I say “Class, class”, you would respond with “Yes, yes”. Or if I say “Peanut butter”, you would say “Jelly time!”

The most important part is that as soon as you see or hear my signal, you immediately stop what you are doing and look at me. That means

you FREEZE and you become SILENT instantly.

Lining Up / Hallway

Expectations

• Talking, making noises, and playing around when lining up and walking in the hallway will not be tolerated. We must be quiet and calm so that

we do not disturb other classes.• You will line up on the right side of

Mrs. Brown’s door, two tiles away from the wall. Do not touch the walls and do not touch other people.• You may not try to save a spot in

line for a friend. No arguing over where you are in line. • When walking down the hall,

always walk on the RIGHT. That way you will not run in to people who are coming in the opposite direction.

Always push your chair in when you get up from your table.

• All students must go to the bathroom and try to use it when we have whole-class bathroom breaks.

• You may not get water until you have tried to use the bathroom and washed your hands.

• We go to the bathroom before school starts, at the end of each block, before and after P.E., before and after snack/recess, before and after lunch, and at the end of the day before dismissal. This is plenty of bathroom breaks! You should not have to go to the bathroom during instruction if you are going like you should during these breaks.

Dismissal at the End of Class

• I will tell you when you need to start packing up. You

will have 5 minutes to prepare to leave. Do not start packing up until told to do so.• Pack up quickly and quietly. This is not a time

to talk or move around the room.

Sit in your seat patiently when you are ready to go. I will dismiss the class when everyone is seated quietly. This shows me that you are ready to leave.

• Make sure that you pack up ALL of your

belongings. Things left behind will be put in our Lost and Found bin. I will not come track you down to give you things you left behind and you will not be allowed to interrupt my next class to come look for something!

Afternoon Homeroom • You will return to homeroom for a few minutes

at the end of each day. You will sit quietly and read your AR book or work on homework. • This is when some of our Classroom

Jobs will be taken care of. Pencils will be sharpened by the Pencil Manager, the Custodian will sweep and make sure the room is straightened up, the Teacher’s Assistant will help perform any last minute tasks, and so on. We will discuss these jobs in more detail later.• You will have a chance to pack up

anything you will need for homework and to go to the bathroom.

Our dismissal procedures for bus riders are the same as they have been in the past several years. Early bus riders will be dismissed from their homerooms at 2:55. All other bus riders will be dismissed at 3:10. There will be a teacher that walks you to your assigned area (the cafeteria) and there will be teachers in there on bus duty for the whole time you are waiting for your bus. You need to have an AR book with you at all times so that you can read quietly or work on homework while you are in there. Talking is not allowed. If you must get up for any reason, raise your hand and ask one of the teachers first.
