There are two new developments for Albrightcontactors which are designed to reduce or almosttotally eliminate the power consumption of coils:

All the main ranges of Albright contactors are nowavailable with magnetic latching - one short pulse toclose the main contacts - one short pulse to reopenthem again.

Contact ratings and all external dimensions areidentical to those of the equivalent types which haveconventionally energised coils.

Similarly all the additional features which areavailable with Albright contactors can be found withthe magnetically latched versions, eg auxiliarycontacts, magnetic blowouts for the main contacts,wide selection of brackets, etc.

There are several operating modes for themagnetically latched contactor:

The result is a bistable device, the coil of whichconsumes no power except during the closing andopening strokes and because there is in effect noheating of the coil, the contactors can be engineeredin the first place with more powerful coils and springsthan with conventional contactors.

(2) By using the purpose designed "Albright" coilcontroller ML52, the supply to the contactor coil isautomatically alternated with each new applicationof a supply voltage. Furthermore the duration of thepulse is limited to a maximum of ½ second and thusit is impossible to overheat the contactor coil even ifthe supply voltage is maintained indefinitely.

3) A third mode using an alternative version of the"Albright" coil controller ML53, is for there to be twoinputs. The one will always give an "on" pulse, andthe other will always give an "off" pulse.

Please Note, Very Important:Magnetically Latched Contactors do not fail safe. If thereis a power failure, or if the supply to the contactor coil isbroken, the contactor contacts will not open or close, iethey will not change state. These devices should nottherefore be used in applications where the failure ofcontacts to open or close could result in a hazardoussituation for persons or equipment.

The benefit from this system is that contactors canbe engineered with powerful coils and springs butcan be operated continuously producing very littleheat. Typically an SW80 will run at 2 watts, anSW200 will run at 3 watts and an SW1500 at 5watts.

Momentarily interrupting the supply to the coilautomatically resets the device so that whenre-energised the coil will see full supply voltage forapproximately ½ second and then the choppedsupply will resume.

Contactors energised using this chopper arefundamentally fail safe in that interruption of thesupply will cause the contacts to open.

For both magnetically latched and chopped coilcontactors the operating voltage ranges areextended compared with conventionally poweredcontactors.

Typically + 25%, 50% of nominal voltage willalways reliably operate the contactors because ofthe reduced or zero coil running power, thÿoperating voltage range applies under all conditionsof extended running, or high ambient temperatures.
