Dear Friends: The new year rings in many exciting events at the Boyer College. I am pleased to announce that one of our composition seniors, William Dougherty, was recently awarded a prestigious Marshall Scholar- ship, which will allow him to study graduate composition at the Royal College of Music in London. Billy is one of only 40 scholarship recipi- ents and competed with students from Ivy league schools around the country. Another Boyer student, John McCarthy (senior baritone), performed at the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions and advanced to the Eastern Regional Finals in New York where, as the youngest contestant, was given a Great Promise Award. Many of the world’s foremost singers, including Jessye Norman and Frederica von Stade, have received such awards from the National Council. Congratulations to Billy and John on their remarkable achievements. Our concert schedule is in full swing with premieres of two orchestral commissions at the Kimmel Center and Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall (see below), as well as opera, dance, instrumental ensemble, faculty and choral performances. He was 101. John E. Rice (BS MusEd ‘50) 1922-2010 was a teacher and administrator in the Jenkintown School District, the first manager of the Temple University Choir, and a member of Singing City. After his 1982 retirement, Rice re- mained active as a volunteer with several organizations. Contribu- tions: Elaine Brown Choral Chair Fund, Temple University 1715 N. Broad Street, Philadelphia, PA 19122. Philmore Ensemble members, Duane Large (BM ‘04, MM ‘06), Julia Madden (MM ‘06) and Amanda Heckman (MM ‘07) performed on period and modern instruments at its premiere concert at the Ethical Society in Philadelphia. Anne-Marie Mulgrew (EDU, Dance ‘73, MUS ‘82) of Anne-Marie Mulgrew and Dancers, received the Temple University Alumni Fellows Award following her lecture, “Sustainable Art: How to continue making art during difficult economic times.” Eric Owens (BM ’93) will sing the role of Alberich in Richard Wagner’s complete Ring Cycle at the Metropolitan Opera in New York this fall. Hugh Panaro (BM ‘85 ) starred in the Walnut Street Theater’s production of Oliver! in Philadelphia for a three-month run. Emiliano Pardo-Tristán’s (MM ‘98, DMA ‘06) composition OJAUA, for orchestra, 8 amplified sing- ers and electronics, will be premiered by The New York University Symphony Orchestra in March, 2010 at the Skirball Center. Deneane Richburg (MFA, Dance ‘07) presented “Past Is Present,” a multimedia and cross disciplin- ary exploration honoring African ancestry at The Walking Fish Theater in early February. ALUMNI NEWS TU ORCHESTRA TO PREMIERE TWO COMMISSIONED WORKS The TU Orchestra, under the baton of Luis Biava, heads to Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall on April 9 at 8:00 pm to perform the New York premieres of two commissions: Ansel Adams: Amer- ica, by Dave and Chris Brubeck and fourth stream...La Banda (The Band) by former Boyer faculty member and 2009 GRAMMY ® winner, Bill Cunliffe. Terell Stafford, 2008 GRAMMY ® winner, will solo on trumpet. Boyer is a member of an orchestral consortium that collectively commissioned the work. Both pieces will receive Philadelphia and world premieres respectively, on March 21 at 3:00 pm at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts. Andrea Clearfield’s (DMA ‘01) Golem Psalms for orchestra and choir, will be performed at the Kimmel Center concert, under the direction of Alan Harler. Dean Robert Stroker will present the 2010 Boyer Tribute Award to the Presser Foundation and the inaugural Boyer College of Music and Dance Inspiration Award to the Brubecks at the Philadelphia concert. Carnell Professor of Music, Chair of Choral Activities and Director of the Temple University Concert Choir, is retiring at the end of the 2009-2010 academic year after teaching at Temple since 1981. An advocate of new American music and the recipient of numerous artistic awards for distinguished contributions to choral music, Professor Harler is also Artistic Director of the Mendelssohn Club of Philadelphia. The Boyer College Alumni Association invites choral directors, music educators and students to a Choral Workshop with new faculty member, Professor Rollo Dilworth, on April 17, 2010. Morning and afternoon ses- sions will address K-12 choral technique and repertoire using area demonstration choirs. Details, including music packet and registra- tion information, visit www.myowlspace.com. Temple Opera Theater won its fourth National Opera Award. Both productions from 2008-09 received national recognition: La Bohème (Leland Kimball, Stage Director) was the national winner in Level Five, the highest, and Le Nozze di Figaro (Marc Astafan, Stage Director) finished in second place in Level Four. Three previous productions from Temple have won national honors: Hansel and Gretel, L’amico Fritz and The Tales of Hoffmann.
