MOCAD EMERGENCYRAPID RESPONSE FUNDRAISER FOR ARTISTS AND CREATIVESDear MOCAD supporters
As the global coronavirus pandemic worsens and robs income from local artists withlittle recourse the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit is partnering with the CityOffice of Arts Culture and Entrepreneurship to help local artists sell their work
The online initiative called the Rapid Response Fundraiser for Artists and Creativesis designed to support artists creatives and the institution itself while all facefinancial hardships after canceled gigs shows exhibits and appearances It also willhelp the museum which like others across the city has had to shut its doors
ldquoIn addition to health concerns this is a challenging moment for many in ourcommunity as we deal with canceled income and revenue streams during uncertaintimesrdquo said MOCAD Executive Director Elysia Borowy-Reeder ldquoMOCAD has alwaysbeen anchored by a rich spirit of community and mutual generosity and we believethat continuing communication and exchange are crucial for all of usrdquo
Local artists interested in selling their work on the MOCAD website should send anemail and a single sample of their work to MOCAD Membership Manager WayneNorthcross at wnorthcrossmocadetroitorg or the ACE Office atdetroitartsandculturegmailcom Chosen artists may sell a single piece of art onthe site If a piece sells the museum will split the proceeds 5050 with the artistBuyers are responsible for arranging shipping
ldquoWe find that most artworks priced from $1000 to $5000 sell quicklyrdquo Northcrosssaid ldquoThis unique time in history is proving the need for interdependent resource-sharing Although we are not a commercial gallery we maintain our mission insupporting the creative ecosystem and to make artwork as accessible as possible tothe public including collectors and art-buyers
Rochelle Riley the cityrsquos Director of Arts and Culture lauded MOCAD for thinking oflocal artists who are struggling because of canceled events gigs and appearances
ldquoMany artists are independent contractors solo workers ndash musicians muralistsdancers poets and others ndash who live 1099 to 1099rdquo she said citing tax forms forfreelancers ldquoI spoke with one artist who lost $30000 in income in a single daybecause of cancellations Shersquos worried about how shersquoll make it through thesummerrdquo

The Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit (MOCAD) is an innovative addition to Detroits vibrant Midtownneighborhood and functions as a hub for the exploration of emerging ideas in the contemporary arts As a non-collecting institution MOCAD is responsive to the cultural content of our time fueling crucial dialogue collaborationand public engagement The Museum is located between the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and the Detroit Institute ofthe Arts Wayne State University and the College for Creative Studies The cavernous 22000 square foot building aformer auto dealership has been simply renovated to maintain its raw historic character MOCADrsquos ambitious series ofpublic programs includes lectures musical performances films literary readings and educational activities for areayouth Mobile Homestead by late artist Mike Kelley is a permanent art work located on the grounds of the Museum Itis both a public sculpture and a private personal construction ndash based on the artists childhood home on Palmer Roadin Westland The ground floor serves as a community event space by and for a diverse public as Kelley intendedMOCAD is generously supported by individual members private and corporate foundations and government agenciesMore information can be found at mocadetroitorg

The Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit (MOCAD) is an innovative addition to Detroits vibrant Midtownneighborhood and functions as a hub for the exploration of emerging ideas in the contemporary arts As a non-collecting institution MOCAD is responsive to the cultural content of our time fueling crucial dialogue collaborationand public engagement The Museum is located between the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and the Detroit Institute ofthe Arts Wayne State University and the College for Creative Studies The cavernous 22000 square foot building aformer auto dealership has been simply renovated to maintain its raw historic character MOCADrsquos ambitious series ofpublic programs includes lectures musical performances films literary readings and educational activities for areayouth Mobile Homestead by late artist Mike Kelley is a permanent art work located on the grounds of the Museum Itis both a public sculpture and a private personal construction ndash based on the artists childhood home on Palmer Roadin Westland The ground floor serves as a community event space by and for a diverse public as Kelley intendedMOCAD is generously supported by individual members private and corporate foundations and government agenciesMore information can be found at mocadetroitorg
