FOR CAREGIVERS: QUESTIONS TO ASK DURING YOUR JOB INTERVIEW
A Job Interview Before a job interview, most candidates focus
only on how they will answer the employer’s questions and communicate how they are qualified for the job.
Yet, a successful interview is a two-way street, especially with caregiving, which relies so heavily on building a close relationship between the caregiver and client.
Therefore, your interview is not only an opportunity to show how great you are for the job, but also to find out whether the job is a great fit for you.
You might be perfectly qualified for the role, but will you feel comfortable in it and enjoy it? You’ll only know if you ask the right questions!
Here are some questions that we recommend asking your interviewer to determine if a job is a good match:
Questions About The Client’s Needs And Family
Can you detail the day-to-day job duties? What does a typical day look like?
Will I need to administer medication or help with hygiene? Does the client have any allergies to medications?
Does the client have any routines he or she follows? What is the client’s personality like? Is he or she
independent? What are the stress-relieving practices that the
client already follows? Does the client follow any religious or cultural
practices that I should know of? What is the biggest challenge this family has faced
in the last year, and what is the biggest challenge in the year ahead?
Questions About Commitment, Pay, And Benefits
What are the expected work hours for this position? Is there flexibility if changes occur? What happens if I am sick or need time off?How often will I be paid, and will I be paid on the books? Will meals be provided or will I need to bring my own? Will I be protected under your homeowner’s insurance in the event that I’m injured on the job?
Questions About Logistics
What will I have access to in the home? Will I have keys, garage door openers, etc.? Are there areas of the house you would prefer to be off-limits?
Who would I be reporting to? What is their availability like during my work hours?
Will I need to use my own car to transport the client?
What is the timeline for the rest of the interview process? When will I get to meet the client?
Just Remember!
If you feel nervous or afraid to ask these questions, just remember: employers appreciate job candidates who ask thoughtful questions.
It shows that you are giving the role serious consideration and want to create the best possible relationship with your client. Once you have your answers, you’ll have a much better sense of whether the position meets your needs.
It’s Better To Hold Out For A Better Fit
If it doesn’t, do not be afraid to decline the offer. It’s better to hold out for a better fit.
