For the survey, each year a predetermined route is driven throughout the county. At known points along this route, crop residue and tillage information is recorded. Data collected at each point includes current crop, previous year crop, % residue, and tillage used. This data is then compiled and compared to previous years to determine trends in crop, tillage and planting methods. This survey has been completed using the same points since 1987, with the exception of slight changes due to new US 30. The 2016 figures show that 53% of all cropland (121,551 acres) was left untilled this fall, remaining unchanged from 2015. Soybeans were the crop most planted in 2016 at 53% of the points surveyed (122,035 acres), followed by corn at 43% (92,291 ac). Wheat acres continued to decline, accounting for only 3% of points surveyed (6,648 acres), down over 50% from 2015. Cover crops were seeded on 10% of the cropland acres, down 4% from 2015. All crops increased in the conservation tillage category for 2016. Corn stubble again topped the residue category with 65% of corn fields surveyed in conservation tillage (>30% residue on the surface), while soybean stubble fields came in a close second at 62% and wheat stubble fields were 43% in conservation tillage. Wheat was the most heavily tilled with 42% of the wheat stubble conventional tilled (<10% residue on the surface) followed by soybean stubble at 19% and corn stubble at 3%. Conservation tillage, crop fields with >30% residue left on the soil surface after tillage is completed, increased 6% on all cropland acres in Crawford County for 2016. Conservation tillage protects valuable topsoil and improves water quality in local streams and rivers as well as the Ohio River and Lake Erie.
