BOOKS ARE THE BASIS

One should not speak in such a way as to agitate the minds of others. Of course, when a teacher speaks, he can speak the truth for the instruction of his students, but such a teacher should not speak to those who are not his students if he will agitate their minds. . .

The process of speaking in spiritual circles is to say something upheld by the scriptures. One should at once quote from scriptural authority to back up what he is saying.

At the same time, such talk should be very pleasurable to the ear. By such discussions, one may derive the highest benefit and elevate human society.

There is a limitless stock of Vedic literature, and one should study this. . . .

Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī has

given many other books, such as

Bhakti-rasāmrta-sindhu, Vidagdha-

mādhava and Lalita-mādhava,

but Upadeśāmrta constitutes the

first instructions for

neophyte devotees. One

should follow these instructions

very strictly.

Harvey Siegel, Professor, Department of Philosophy, University of Miami

The Western philosophical tradition began in ancient Greece, and philosophy of education began with it. … The introduction by Socrates of the “Socratic method” of questioning (see dialectic) began a tradition in which reasoning and the search for reasons that might justify beliefs, judgments,

and actions was (and remains) fundamental; such questioning in turn eventually gave rise to the view that education should encourage in all students and persons, to the greatest extent possible, the pursuit of the life of reason. This view of the central place of reason in education has been shared by most of the major figures in the history of philosophy of education, despite the otherwise substantial differences in their other philosophical views.

TheWestern Theater’s Idea

“We learn through experience andexperiencing, and no one teachesanyone anything…

If the environment permits it, anyonecan learn whatever he chooses to learn; and if the individual permits it, the environment will teach him everything it has to teach…

This means involvement on all levels: intellectual, physical and intuitive.

Of the three, the intuitive, the most vital to the learning situation, is neglected”

Viola Spolin, Improvisation for the

Theatre, Northwestern University Press, 1963

Jñana / Dhyana

What has been discussed from the Occidental tradition is Jñana, and a little higher, Dhyana.

In his thesis Goswami shows a fine ability to blend “insider” and “outsider” views. . . What also impresses is the integrity of his appraisal, in keeping with the highest standards of intellectual honesty.

The gist of Goswami’s thesis is a study in depth of central features of the ‘living theology’ of Swami Prabhupada . . . The result is a work of impressive insight and scholarship.A Living Tradition of Krishna Bhakti, pg. 4, Oxford University Press, 2012

Therefore, to understand the mission of Lord Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu and follow in His

footsteps, one must very seriously follow in the

footsteps of the six Gosvāmīs — Śrī Rūpa, Sanātana, Bhatta Raghunātha, Śrī Jīva, Gopāla

Bhatta and Dāsa Raghunātha.

The first step in human civilization consists of occupational engagements performed according to the scriptural injunctions. The higher intelligence of a human being should be trained to understand basic dharma. In human society there are various religious conceptions characterized as Hindu, Christian, Hebrew, Mohammedan, Buddhist and so on, for without religion, human society is no better than animal society.
