The introductory address was by W. V. Cox " of the board of education. The principal address was by Rev. M. W. Clair, pastor of Asbury M. E. Church, who spoke eloquently of the achievement of the graduates, of the progress of the race and of the -many opportunities presented to the colored race in this era. lie also pointed out the great advantages the colored race has at present for education, and development along social, religious and moral lines. Herman Flagg, Howard, and Thomas U. Alexander, Amherst. Subscribed by Teachers- The $200 scholarship subscribed by the teachers was awarded by competitive examination. No pupil was allowed to enter th3 contest who did not have a class record of "good" or better. By agreement among the competitors the scholarship was divided into two parts, first part, $150, being awarded to Samuel H. Dreear, who will enter Bowdoin College, and the second part to Rosabelle Lane, who will enter Oberlin. Five other graduates have announced their Intention to enter colleges, making the total fourteen. The exercises were concluded by the awarding of diplomas by Associate Justice Thomas H. One hundred poles of concrete for transmission purposes have been ordered by a railroad In Canada, and are to be given a thorough trial In competition with wood, which Is more accessible at this point than In parts of the United States, where such a trial would be more favorable to the concrete. These poles are made In a mold and In section are square with the corners chambered off. A ."50-foot pole, to withstand a weight of ,000 pounds, will weigh about one ion, wmitr a puic ui me sctjne lengin 10 a weight of 1.000 pounds, will weigh about 1,300 pounds. The cost of concrete poles varies with the location, but generally speaking, It is about one-third that of steel. As compared with wood the first cost Is greater, but this Is offset by the economy of maintenance and by the fact that fewer poles are required to carry the same load. In actual experience concrete poles have withstood a sixty-mile wind which would have certainly demoralized wooden poles. Uniform Booth Construction. The plan for uniform decorations at shows and expositions which originated in this country, does not meet with favor in F.ngland, where the Idea is to be inaugurated in connection with a rrcat automobile display at the Olympia in 1-ondon. The pi 'position is very adversely criticised throughout Great Britain. The scheme contemplates uniform booth construction and decoration, which Is the only way a harmonious general display may be secured, and In this country it has met with general approval. Suez Canal Will Transport Gasoline.The Suez canal has heretofore been

closed to tank steamers carrying Inflammablematerial In bulk, but this restrictionhas been modified to the extent of per-mining some sucn crans to pass tnrougnthe canal. It la now probable that the raisingof this embargo will have the effect oflowering the price of gasoline in Europeand incidentally of booming the automobilebusiness of the old world.

Great Lakes Better Equipped.The opening of the season of the Great

Lakes finds the lower ports better equippedthan ever before for. the work of unloadingores and other cargoes from the boats.Daring the past winter thirteen electricplants have been laid at Lake Erie portsby one construction firm alone, which hasmade the installations for three differentore-handling companies. By quickly loadingand unloading these boats the annualcapacity of the crafts is Increased so thatthe great outlay for the machinery Is entirelywarranted. All of these plants areequipped with five-ton bucket*.

The big hall wasdecorated with hundreds of (lags and withgreens, and on the east side of the audltorlum,on a large platform, were seated thegraduates, several members of the boardof education and a number of colored educators.Long before the time announced for the

exercises to begin friends and relative* ofthe graduates appeared In the hall. Promptlyat 8 o'clock the graduates formed a lineat the entrance to the hall and proceededto their seats on the platform, to the strainsof a. march played by a section of the MarineBand, under Lieut. Santelmann. Thegirls were dressed in white and carriedbouquets of flowers.

Rev. D. V. Rivers, who Invoked Divineblessing. The introductory address was byW. V. Cox "

of the board of education. Theprincipal address was by Rev. M. W. Clair,pastor of Asbury M. E. Concrete Poles.One hundred poles of concrete for transmissionpurposes have been ordered by a

railroad In Canada, and are to be givena thorough trial In competition with wood,which Is more accessible at this point thanIn parts of the United States, where sucha trial would be more favorable to the concrete.These poles are made In a mold andIn section are square with the cornerschambered off. A ."50-foot pole, to withstanda weight of ,000 pounds, will weigh aboutone ion, wmitr a puic ui me sctjne lengin 10a weight of 1.000 pounds, will weigh about1,300 pounds.The cost of concrete poles varies with the

location, but generally speaking, It is aboutone-third that of steel. As compared withwood the first cost Is greater, but this Isoffset by the economy of maintenance andby the fact that fewer poles are required tocarry the same load. In actual experienceconcrete poles have withstood a sixty-milewind which would have certainly demoralizedwooden poles.

Uniform Booth Construction.The plan for uniform decorations at

shows and expositions which originated inthis country, does not meet with favor inF.ngland, where the Idea is to be inauguratedin connection with a rrcat automobiledisplay at the Olympia in 1-ondon. Thepi 'position is very adversely criticisedthroughout Great Britain. The schemecontemplates uniform booth constructionand decoration, which Is the only way aharmonious general display may be secured,and In this country it has met withgeneral approval.
