Bill Rosefelt was born at St. Vincent’s Hospital, the original sponsor of St. Vincent Meals on Wheels. He lived in Los Angeles all of his life and worked for the L.A. County Assessor’s office.

Over the years, Bill made several gifts to St. Vincent Meals on Wheels. But he generously planned ahead to make his ultimate gift through a bequest in his will.

When he passed away at age 76, Bill left a legacy of food and love for our seniors in the amount of $800,000.

According to his friend and attorney Lee Egerman, “Bill was a quiet man who believed in St. Vincent Meals on Wheels’ vision

and that we are all part of a larger community. Making sure those less fortunate had enough to eat was important to him and his generous gift reflects that.”

We are so grateful to Bill for his foresight and generosity.

The number of seniors in Los Angeles is growing making St. Vincent Meals on Wheels—and planned gifts from caring supporters like you—more crucial than ever in the coming years.

Please remember us in your will. And tell us now so Sister Alice Marie

can personally thank you on behalf of all the seniors you’ll feed for years to come. You’ll also inspire others considering planned gifts.

By making a bequest or other planned gift, you become a lifetime member of the Sister Alice Marie Quinn Legacy Society. Your compassion will be honored on our Donor Wall and with invitations to Legacy Society events.

Most importantly, you’ll ensure our future, so no L.A. senior goes hungry. l

LOVE IN ACTION AT OUR21ST ANNUAL WALK/BIKE-A-THON!

Dog Haus served gourmet hot dogs to all participants and volunteers.

Our emcee, actor/director Fred Savage, came to cheer on the walkers and riders.

Dogs supported the cause by walking too!

Bikers rode five miles up the coast and back on the beach bike path.

Walkers enjoyed a 3.7-mile walk along the beach.

At the 21st annual Beach Walk/Bike-a-Thon, more than 300 members of our St. Vincent family enjoyed a walk or bike ride at the beach while helping to feed L.A.’s homebound seniors.

The April event raised over $71,000 to buy food for our homebound clients. Walker Matthew Loa, who is eight years old, raised over $2,500 as the top fundraiser. He won an Apple iWatch for his efforts. l

Exclusive Wine Dinner for Seven Helps Feed Hundreds of Seniors

Longtime supporter Jay Eagan recently held an ultimate wine dinner at the Jonathan Club to benefit St. Vincent Meals on Wheels.

Seven guests attended the exclusive chef ’s table multi-course dinner, featuring rare wines from Jay’s personal wine cellar, including some that are out of production. The special evening

raised over $10,000 to buy food for our seniors. l

If you’re interested in hosting a Cuisine dinner fundraiser, we can help you secure a special chef and location. Please contact Daryl Twerdahl at (213) 484-7327 or [email protected].

Sister Alice Marie Honored with Cardinal’s Award

In April, Archbishop José H. Gomez bestowed the 2016 Cardinal’s Award on five honorees, including Sister Alice Marie. The event celebrated the selfless, self-effacing and talented people who make up the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.

In her acceptance speech, Sister said, “In the beginning, it was just us and a few pots of stew. But the response was tremendous, and it became impossible to ignore the great need in the community. Over the years, it became so much more than food; it became friendship, family and nourishment for the soul.”

In L.A., he worked for the Federal Equal Opportunity Employment

Commission until his retirement.

every day. I like to solve everyday problems.”

He published a children’s book entitled The Legend of the Christmas Stocking. He’s created several inventions, including a multi-exercise pole, a stand-up foot dryer to prevent athlete’s foot, and a make your own mayonnaise kit.

A foot problem that makes it hard to walk prevents Edwin from shopping or preparing food. “These meals make up 95% of what I eat all day, so they’re important to me,” he said. “I love the mashed potatoes and gravy, and all the fresh fruit. I also enjoy the young people who deliver my meals; it’s good to see them giving back and being kind.”

Edwin had a message for

“There are seniors in far worse shape than I am and they would be skeletons without your help.”

St. Vincent supporters: “I want to give all you boosters a boost. There are seniors in far worse shape than I am and they would be skeletons without your help. Thank you.” l

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

“Entrust Your Work to the Lord…”

“Entrust your work to the Lord and your plans will succeed.” Proverbs 16:3

This Proverb tells the story of St. Vincent Meals on Wheels. On July 7, we marked our 39th anniversary. What began as a way to feed 100 seniors in our neighborhood has served thousands of seniors and other shut-ins across Los Angeles who need hot nutritious meals prepared and delivered with dignity and caring. I would like to share our history with you over the next year, until we

celebrate 40 years on 7/7/17!

The Lord has inspired everything over the years, starting with the church volunteers who cooked, delivered meals in their own cars, and washed the pots and pans. I really had no idea how it would all come together.

Two men from our local church drove one of our first meal delivery routes. One hot summer day, the runner took the meal and didn’t return for 15 minutes. The driver thought something was wrong, so he went inside to find the two men visiting over a cold beer. The runner said the client

offered him a beer and he didn’t want to offend him.

Today, our runners accept cold water and drinks from clients, but no more beer! Our clients were so generous and grateful for all we did in those first months as we tried different menus and learned what works.

Soon after we began, we decided to go beyond only serving clients over 60 years old to serving anyone in our service area who is homebound and needs a meal. This makes us unique among meals on wheels programs.

Until the next issue, may God continue to bless you and keep you well. Please pray for us as we entrust our work to the Lord.

Peace,

Sister Alice Marie, D.C.

Here’s how a therapeutic renal meal helps our kidney patients—including many who depend on dialysis treatments to live—stay on track:
