MEET THE ARTISTS

LAUREN ABOULAFIA (Actor/Writer) is thrilled to be a part of Jewish Women’s Theatre. Lauren graduated from the University of Washington with a BA in theatre and studied at the British Drama Academy in London. She has performed onstage at Interlochen and the Williamstown Theatre Festival; she has participated in comedy troupes at the Groundlings and UCB; and she performs stand up around town. She has appeared in numerous TV show and movies, but she mostly enjoys performing her solo show, Moving On Up. Her hardest role so far is a mom, which consistently teaches her that life is ever-changing and love in the end is all we need.

LEENIE BAKER (NEXT Fellow/Literary), a theatre-maker, educator, and activist based in LA, is particularly passionate about new-work development, gender parity, and access to education. She is a 2019 Max K. Lerner Fellowship recipient and just showcased her play Genesis as part of Inkwell Theater’s Development Lab series. Outside of theater, she works as a Judaic studies, general education, and ACT/SAT tutor with children ranging from kindergarten through high school seniors. A former Core Company member at the Orchard Project, she is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, where she majored in theatre arts, political science, and English writing, with a minor in Chinese. She hopes to continue focusing on new-work development as both a playwright and dramaturg.

PATTIE BAKER (Writer), the author of Food for My Daughters, Bucket List, and Traveling at the Speed of Bike, has been published in numerous magazines and online sites, including Urban Farm and Unearth Women, and served as a promotional writer and project manager for Gannett’s USA Today, Turner Broadcasting, UPS, and more. She was featured in O:The Oprah Magazine in a story about people making their dreams a reality after she helped start a series of community gardens. A native New Yorker, she and her husband have lived in metro Atlanta for the past thirty years, where they raised their two daughters. While waiting to leave for Peace Corps Uganda (delayed due to COVID-19), she continues to grow a home garden, teach bike skills remotely as a League of American Bicyclists Cycling instructor, and write a blog, TravelingAtTheSpeedOfBike.com. She is still carrying big jugs.

DAVID CHIU (NEXT Fellow/Co-Director/Writer) is a screenwriter living in Los Angeles. He and writing partner Patrick Wall wrote an episode for the Amazon Prime series LORE and have sold a VR project to Dreamscape Immersive for development with Sam Raimi and Walter Parkes. Together, David and Patrick are represented by the Gersh Agency and Authentic Talent & Literary Management. David is a member of Temple Isaiah, where he received the 2019 Emerging Leader Award, and currently serves on its Board of Trustees. He has previously written for the JWT shows True Colors and Inside Our Time. Of Chinese and Litvak heritage, David is a member of an LA-based Jews of Color group, through which he has helped advise the local Jewish Federation on issues of inclusion.

JASMINE CURRY (Actor) previously appeared in JWT salons Sex, Love and Addiction in the 21st Century, Living After and last summer’s NEXT Salon, The Way Home. She is grateful to share her 900 square feet house with her spouse and daughter and thanks them for giving her space (both mental and physical) to continue to perform.

ALLISON FRADKIN (Writer), a writer with thespian tendencies, delights in both the oys and joys of bringing scintillating stories to the stage. In California, her work has been presented by Theatre Out, Logan Squared Productions, Play Club West, and The Los Angeles Female Playwrights Initiative. As an actress, she has played Miep Gies in The Diary of Anne Frank and, more “Jewdiciously," been a member of the ensemble in Fiddler on the Roof. An enthusiast of inclusivity and accessibility, Allison freelances for her hometown of Chicago as literary manager of Violet Surprise Theatre, curating new works by queer women; and as dramatist for Special Gifts Theatre, adapting scripts for actors of all abilities.

ANDREW FROMER (Producer/JWT Assistant Artistic Director) a Los Angeles native, grew up as an active member in the Jewish community through Stephen Wise Temple. He attended Windward School in Mar Vista, where his career as an actor began in the school plays and musicals. After completing his BFA in theater at UC Santa Barbara and an exciting year of living in Israel, Andrew returned to LA for acting and producing. His TV credits include Never Have I Ever (Netflix) and Anger Management (FX); feature film credits include Highway to Havasu (Billy/Producer) and The Sweet Life (Mike/Assistant to Production). Andrew also edits and directs and is excited to be coordinating this year's iteration of NEXT @ The Braid, JWT's Emerging Artists Fellowship. Find out more info at www.jewishwomenstheatre.org/next.

SOPHIE GREENBAUM (NEXT Fellow/Co-Director/Songwriter) is a native LA songwriter, producer, actress, and artist.  As the daughter of two actors, creativity has always been in her blood. She has made a career for herself as a songwriter/music producer working with the likes of Britney Spears, Max Martin, Kendrick Lamar, Ke$ha, Bloodshy and Avant, American Idol winners, and many others. Her band, Sophie and the Bom Boms, was signed to Columbia Records and toured the world. She recently started venturing back into theater, one of her first loves. Taking classes at Beverly Hills Playhouse and doing live performance projects around LA, Sophie currently spends her time juggling between her creative work and husband David and son Moshe.

MIKE HIMELSTEIN (Composer) has had more than 500 songs recorded by artists ranging from the Temptations, Al Jarreau, Stray Cats, the Brian Setzer Orchestra, Johnny Winter, and Joe Bonamassa to Julie Andrews, Mandy Moore, Dick Van Dyke, Martin Short, and William Shatner, among others. His songs have been featured in TV, films, and onstage in productions including Shrek (the Academy Award-winning movie and Broadway musical), Blades of Glory, Saturday Night Live, The Tonight Show, The Sopranos, Disney’s Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, Special Agent Oso, Sheriff Callie’s Wild West, Jim Henson’s Sid the Science Kid, Dinosaur Train, and Splash & Bubbles. He has written several television theme songs and many songs for Disneyland Parks around the world. Mike is a three-time Emmy nominee, an Annie nominee, and the two-time winner of the Cynopsis Imagination Awards. He was a 2007 recipient of the ASCAP Rhythm & Soul Award for his hit song “God’s Gift to the World.”

AMANDA HOROWITZ (NEXT Fellow/Stage Manager) is a young adult who wants to spend her life organizing and creating new theater. She recently graduated with bachelor’s degrees in theater and math from The University of Alabama, where she stage managed and assistant stage managed eight shows in the theater department. She most recently directed a thirty-minute play as part of a new-works play festival in North Hollywood. She hopes someday to be able to run her own theater company dedicated to producing emerging theater and providing other young adults with their first paid opportunities in the arts. She is thankful to Jewish Women’s Theatre for providing her first step toward her professional career.

SHIRL KELEMER (Writer) has her Ph.D. in clinical psychology and is in private practice in West Hollywood. Years ago she wrote for Love American Style and the Sandy Duncan Show. She was born in a displaced person’s camp in Munich, Germany, and came to the United States at age four. Her parents, as Holocaust survivors and second cousins, the only two left of a family of fourteen, had an urgent drive to keep everybody close. The immigrant mind and mentality is a common theme in her writing. She writes poetry and short stories and is now writing a play. She loves being a grandmother.

SHARON LANDAU (JWT Managing Director) brings to JWT 20 years of non-profit leadership experience helping programs and organizations scale and thrive. As a non-profit director and consultant, she engaged multidisciplinary stakeholders to design, pilot, scale and evaluate innovative programs improving contraceptive access at local, state and national levels that became replicable models.  She launched Pharmacy Forward, the nation’s first leadership program for pharmacists in reproductive health. She previously worked in management consulting for Kaiser Permanente and as clinic manager for Planned Parenthood Los Angeles. She holds a Masters in public health from UCLA and is an alumna of CA Women’s Policy Institute and Center for Collaborative Planning’s Leadership Institute.

MARCO MARINANGELI (Songwriter) Born and raised in Rome, Italy, Marinangeli has since 1985 established himself as a successful composer/producer in the record business and the film/TV industry in LA. He entered the professional music arena at a very early age as the musical director and producer for various European artists. Marinangeli has produced top-selling albums for the Walt Disney Company, garnering a Grammy nomination as well as multiple Platinum and Gold record awards. He has written and produced tracks for artists as diverse as Josh Groban, Il Divo, the Tenors, Il Volo, Andrea Bocelli, Placido Domingo, Peter Frampton, Marc Anthony, Donna Summer, Taylor Dayne, Kathie Lee Gifford, Myra, Olga Tañon, Miley Cyrus, Hilary Duff, Solas, Chieftains, and Larry Carlton and collaborated with such producers and composers as David Foster, Humberto Gatica, Bill Ross, Luis Bacalov, Jorge Calandrelli, and Lalo Schifrin.

RACHEL MINKOFF (NEXT Fellow/Associate Producer) graduated in 2014 with a BA in acting and a minor in stage combat from Columbia College, Chicago, and worked as a solo performance artist at the established venue Stage 773. In 2015, she performed at the NEU NOW Festival in Amsterdam with her performance collective, which crafted original immersive works for the stage. Rachel lives in Los Angeles, where she works at RAW Artists researching up-and-coming artists to showcase their creativity. She is excited to collaborate with Jewish Women’s Theater for the first time as part of this wonderful community of artists.

SUSAN MORGENSTERN (JWT Producing Director) began directing in college by staging musical-theatre concert readings while co-teaching American musical comedy with Tom Lehrer at UC Santa Cruz.  She went on to teach and direct at the renowned Stage Door Manor, a performing-arts camp in upstate New York. She co-authored and directed 18 Minutes of Fame: A Musical Journey with Barbara Minkus, which has played in Los Angeles and NYC. Susan works as a consultant show director at Disneyland Parks and Resorts, Anaheim, where she has the privilege of working with Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, and all their pals.  She has directed numerous JWT salon shows and is especially proud to be its producing director, working closely with a tremendous group of brilliant and passionately creative people.

ROSIE MOSS (Actor) is an Abby Freeman Artist-in-Residence at JWT. She recently shot the lead role in Epic Level Entertainment's feature film Blood Born. Rosie starred in A&E/Lifetime Network's digital series The Rookie. Her TV credits include appearances on ABC's The Conners and Freeform's Famous in Love. She originated the role of Sarah Kaufman in the West Coast Jewish Theatre’s production of FUGU. Other theatre credits include Macbethx5 (The Odyssey), The Physicists (Sacred Fools), and The Ascent (The Blank Theatre). Film: To Be King, Strangers, I Can’t Do This, One Halloween, and American Girl. Rosie has also written, produced and acted in her short films The Pass and Enchanted, LLC. BFA, Boston University. Keep up with Rosie at RosieMoss.com.

FARAH R. RASHDAN (Writer) is a first-generation Arab-Jordanian female. Having gotten a BS degree from the University of Nevada, Reno, she moved to Los Angeles two years ago to write about the human experience that includes all bodies, backgrounds, and groups for women of color, especially Arab-American females. Excited about the next chapter in her life here in LA, she hopes to continue meeting other kind and beautifully talented individuals! She is also a foodie at heart; you learn so much about people when you have a taste of a person's culture.

ROMY ROSHAN (Writer) is a pseudonym for a Los Angeles based writer.

LENA RUDNIK (Writer) is passionate about hysterically dysfunctional relationship stories and investigating self, society, and the cosmos. She likes wearing t-shirts in glamorous places, and her spirit animal is a buffalo (though the shaman’s explanation of why was unconvincing). Lena is a graduate of Columbia’s MFA directing program whose films have shown at Lincoln Center, international film festivals, PBS, and on acclaimed web series. Her video work has been commissioned by National Sawdust, UNWomen, Lonely Planet, and Bono’s ONE Campaign. Her feature screenplay Lil Surfer Girl garnered numerous accolades. Lena's work spans genres, but the uncomfortable mixture of comedy and pathos and her desire to forward female stories remains unyielding. A Girl's Guide to Surviving Your Father's Wedding is adapted from her feature screenplay Daddy’s Girl, which was developed through the prestigious Cine Qua Non Lab and is being produced by Emmy-nominated producer Reka Posta.

He then realized he preferred warmth and relocated to Los Angeles, where he now serves as a Jewish education specialist at Hillel at UCLA. Plays include Rite of Passage, which was workshopped at the Kennedy Center Playwright Intensive, Unrequited, The Scenic View, and Peace Talks, the latter of which was written and performed with his writing partner and was subsequently showcased through the David Project. CHANNA SCHACHET-BRISKIN (Graphic Designer) is a Californian living in New Jersey. She took a gap year after high school to be a cast member at Walt Disney World with the Disney College Program. Chana recently graduated with two associate degrees in graphic design and communications: media. Her diverse passions include swing dancing, filmmaking, puppet building, and, of course, theater. (Instagram: @essbee.productions)

DAPHNA SHULL (JWT Creative Associate/NEXT Literary Manager) is a four-time NEXT Arts Council Fellow, literary manager, writer, artist and photographer born and raised in Tampa, Florida. Along with working at JWT,  Daphna is a teaching artist at Cayton Children's Museum and runs her own photography business, Happy Life Kids Photography. www.happylifekidsphotography.com.

RONDA SPINAK (Artistic Director) created JWT’s At-Homes Salon Theatre Series and since has curated and produced more than 50 original Jewish-themed salon shows, as well as adapted many of the pieces performed. Spinak developed and produced Ovation-recommended Not That Jewish at JWT’s The Braid, which ran for 16 months, garnered an LA Drama Critics Circle nomination, and then moved to off-Broadway. She also produced Rain Pryor’s hit show Fried Chicken & Latkes and Vicki Juditz’s Ovation-recommended Sacred Resistance. Spinak co-wrote Stories from the Fringe, putting the stories of women rabbis on stage for the first time. Since then, she and her team have interviewed on videotape 180 national and international women rabbis, and in partnership with Jewish Women’s Archive have made many of the interviews available online at www.jwa.org. She has written for Rugrats, and her plays include Oscar Wilde’s Wife, a favorite at the Ashland New Play Festival. She is on the board of the Alliance for Jewish Theatres and is a member of the Dramatists Guild. She feels blessed to be working with so many creative people who give their hearts and souls to JWT.

CHARLES “CHAZ” VOLK (NEXT Fellow/Digital Producer) is a writer and director who is inspired by untraditional forms of storytelling and entrepreneurial decisions. As an LA native, Chaz aspires to become an influence in tomorrow’s Hollywood as Mr. Thrive.

AYSHA WAX (Writer) is a writer, director and comedian. She is fun, witty and unintentionally the loudest person in the room. Aysha has had her sketch videos featured on Buzzfeed, Funnyordie, Wifey TV, and WhoHaHa. Aysha has performed improv and sketch around Los Angeles at iO West, the Upright Citizen's Brigade, Westside Comedy Theater, and the Groundlings. ORA YASHAR (NEXT Literary Consultant) is an Iranian-American writer/director. Her short script Ice Cream was a 2017 Austin Film Fest semi-finalist, Kansas City Film Fest finalist, and a 2018 Screencraft Film Fund semi-finalist. In 2019, Ora was selected for JWT’s NEXT Fellowship and is thrilled to be back for the 2020 season. Further nourishing her love of storytelling are her two seasons as the showrunner's assistant on the Netflix series Atypical and her ongoing involvement as a script consultant for the Sundance Institute’s Episodic Lab. She earned her MFA in directing from Chapman University.

RUTH YASHARPOUR (Writer) has been a visual artist her entire life. Art has been her companion, her respite, and her vehicle for expression. Her strong intuition has transcended her expression beyond images and into the literary world, where her art lives alongside the written word. Ruth holds an FA degree in fine/visual art, with a minor in child psychology. She has worked as a digital artist for such companies as Marvel Comics, Walt Disney Imagineering, and USC. Her passion for expression has been further fueled as the mother of two very loving and creative beings. Her children’s belief in their mother’s artistic talents has further inspired her desire to create. In writing, she seeks to find a common thread with others. Her need to plug into a collective human experience feels more urgent and meaningful than ever.

SUSIE YURÉ (Director of Community Engagement/Associate Producer) has proudly worked with JWT for ten years. She has volunteered in nonprofit organizations in which she has held leadership roles in fundraising, event planning, facilities coordinating, programming, membership, marketing, and administration. Susie has produced musical theatre productions, classical concerts, and cabaret performances. She holds a BA and MA in elementary education from USC (where she met her husband), along with her California lifetime teaching credential. Her favorite role is as mom to her two children and as Grammy to two grandsons.

ROSE ZIFF (Special Projects Manager/Associate Producer) came out of retirement to work for JWT after working at UCLA Medical Center for 33 years, where she functioned as “den mother” to more than 1000 interns, residents, and clinical fellows at UCLA, the VA, and Olive View-UCLA Medical Centers, providing resources and support. Rose is currently serving on the Board of Directors for Lev Eisha, a Jewish women's non-profit religious organization and spiritual community. Her hobbies include gardening, visiting Providence St. John’s Hospital with her therapy dog, and hosting a monthly book club.

JEWISH WOMEN’S THEATRE gives voice to contemporary Jewish stories in America today by developing original artistic works, by ensuring these works are performed and seen, and by creating a lasting legacy for future generations. Now in our 13th season, JWT has created 50 original Salon Theatre shows, commissioned 40 short or long-form plays or monologues, adapted numerous pieces, and presented six short films. JWT also commissioned and pro-duced Ovation-recommended Not That Jewish by Monica Piper, which ran for over 16 months in LA and premiered off-Broadway, running for over 200 performances. JWT also produced Rain Pryor’s Fried Chicken & Latkes, Annie Korzen’s Annie Korzen Famous Actress, and Vicki Juditz’s Ovation-recommended Sacred Resistance.
