Ambrose hosted the second meeting in a series regarding emergency preparedness on behalf of Mayor Ras J. Baraka at Newark Police Headquarters today. In advance of weather-related or other emergencies that may hinder the public’s mobility, affect traffic and limit access to services, Mayor Baraka and Public Safety Director Ambrose assembled city officials along with other area dignitaries, corporations and organizational leaders to devise a targeted strategic plan. An Emergency Preparedness Task Force will be created out of the group of attendees and select others. “Our goal is to ensure that we have a solid, coordinated plan in place, involving Newark Police, Fire and Office of Emergency Management, along with other city agencies and emergency response teams,” Mayor Baraka said. “We are working with our corporate and business partners, schools, hospitals, houses of worship and others because we believe that the best strategy is one that involves as many entities as possible to keep the public updated with the latest safety information related to any emergency event.” “We will vigorously employ every resource at our disposal, including our first responders, city agencies, State and County law enforcement partners, the press, social media, the Newark Police Division’s Smartphone app and others to keep the public apprised of up-to-the-minute emergency information,” Director Ambrose said. “Communication is a primary tool in fostering public safety versus frustration during emergencies. Our work is to disseminate as much information to the public as possible to serve and safeguard our neighbors and visitors.” During both meetings, public officials and corporate and organizational leaders discussed issues related to traffic, creating an emergency hotline and deploying robocalls and message boards during emergency events. Establishing a memorandum of understanding with parking lots, restaurants, businesses and universities was also addressed. The city is also working with its own

Newark Public Safety Director Ambrose Hosts 2nd Emergency Preparedness Conference

Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose hosted the second meeting in a series regarding emergency preparedness on behalf of Mayor Ras J. Baraka at Newark Police Headquarters today.

In advance of weather-related or other emergencies that may hinder the public’s mobility, affect traffic and limit access to services, Mayor Baraka and Public Safety Director Ambrose assembled city officials along with other area dignitaries, corporations and organizational leaders to devise a targeted strategic plan. During both meetings, public officials and corporate and organizational leaders discussed issues related to traffic, creating an emergency hotline and deploying robocalls and message boards during emergency events. Establishing a memorandum of understanding with parking lots, restaurants, businesses and universities was also addressed. The city is also working with its own agencies and with corporate sponsors to create temporary shelters. And an agreement has been established with WBGO 88.3 FM to post hourly updates provided by the Department of Public Safety.

Emergency advisory updates via social media sites at Facebook, Twitter, Nextdoor, Nixle and Instagram will be provided by the Newark Department of Public Safety.

Director Ambrose also recommends that individuals maintain emergency care packages with necessities, such as water, medication, cell phone and back up charger, snacks for children, flashlights and infant care items.
