After bowling together in three previous WWPB mixed doubles events (and making finals in each) they claimed their $2000 top prize. Tori, taking her second WWPB title at Yorba Linda Bowl, has a total of five WWPB titles. Utilizing a gift from her sister, Robin Romeo, Tori stated, “I want to thank Robin for giving me the balls I used, Brunswick’s Fuse and Zone. She hand picked them from her collection - knowing my game she felt these would be the right ones. The Fuse I used most of Saturday and some on Sunday. Tori continued, ” I also want to thank Rusty Bryant of The Pro Zone Pro Shop located inside Mission Hills Bowl for drilling my equipment not only for this tournament but all of my equipment for the past 10 years or so. If it wasn’t for him I’m positive I would not have scored as well as I did. Thanks Rusty for your expertise and great imagination”. Lastly, Tori remarked, “This is the first time (my husband) Jeff has seen me win. We will be married 10 years this No- vember. That was pretty cool having him there”. She also wanted to be sure to thank Vince Wood for being such a GREAT partner. Tori has worked as a per- sonal trainer for over 10 years. Hey Joe, wait for me!“Joe’s just a kid,” Frank 91, said when referring to his 88-year-

old friend, Joe Lyou. Both men have been sports writers and friends, for more years

than most of us have been alive and have covered more bowling tournaments together than probably any other journalists in the history of bowling.

It isn’t surprising that when Joe left this earth on March 22, to cover the biggest and best tournament in the universe, that Frank went to join him just a few days later.

Frank was passionate about bowling, so much so that he still bowled four, or more days a week at Forest Lanes, which is about two tenths of a mile from his charming mobile home in Forest Gardens in Lake Forest. His last recorded game; a day or so before he died was a whopping 245.

He covered every tournament he could, especially the ladies tournaments, His uncanny memory for names and scores were a source of amazement.

When he and Joe would return from their adventures they would sit on the phone and discuss their versions of who did what until their arguments would get so heated that one would hang up on the other.

They had an unspoken agreement to agree to disagree but no agreement about how loud they could yell at each other. The yelling matches never stopped them from making their weekly calls to each other.

Frank was indeed an inspiration to the employees at Forest Lanes. He never let an illness or pain stop him from doing the things he wanted to do. “I treat those things with contempt,” he would say.

“Somehow we just thought that he would always be around,” said Gail, a coffee shop employee. “The first thing he would do when he came in the bowl was ask for a cup of black coffee and then he would sit down and start talking. “Frank, we can’t sit here and talk all day,” she would finally say, then he would let her know his coffee was cold, so she would heat it up and he would wander off to talk to someone else.

His favorite lanes were 19-20 or 21 so he could look out the front doors and keep an eye on his car. Yep, he still drove.

The energetic Frank habitually took brisk walks around his mobile home park every night, had coffee with the neighbors at the clubhouse every morning at 9 AM and played bingo every Thursday night.

Whenever the number B5 was called, Frank would yell “BEER FRAM!” In his memory, it is now a tradition that his bingo friends continue to do.

Frank Kietz, 91, born in Brooklyn, New York on December 23, 1916 was the only child to German immigrant parents. They moved to Lynwood, California in 1919. Frank graduated from Lynwood high school and worked for the Long Beach Indepen-dent as a printer, setting type. He was drafted into the U.S. Army during World War II in 1945. He later married Betty in 1951 and acquired a whole family, children Vicki and Michael. He proved to be a good father and husband, later a grandfather and even a great-grandfather. He and Betty almost celebrated their 50th wed-ding anniversary before she passed away. Frank will always be remembered as being a good teacher and having a sharp mind. He frequently demonstrated his great knowledge of the abstract and prided himself as being a “know it all”. Frank was always inter-esting to talk with and loved writing. His career of writing for the California Bowling News was perfect for him. It combined both of his passions, bowling and writing. Writing for the newspaper opened Frank’s eyes to traveling and carried him to many different parts of the world, touring new bowling centers. He won many awards for his writing endeavors and was eventually inducted into the Bowling Writers Hall of Fame.

After bowling- a 245 game mind you- Frank became short of breath and drove himself to the emergency room. He passed away on the morning of April 2nd due to a heart attack with his family at his bedside. He is survived by daughter Vicki and her husband Hank Plaisier, son Michael Kietz and wife Ellen, granddaughter Erin and her husband Scott Neiderhiser, granddaughter Melanie Dewald, and great-grandson Carter Neiderhiser. Frank was a good man, filled with honesty and integrity and he will never be forgotten. The world of bowling and commissary food will never be the same again.

Submitted by Granddaughter Erin

Orange County suffered another great loss recently as Frank Kietz, whom I have had the pleasure of knowing over the last several years, passed away. It is with great sadness that I relive this memory of a man who devoted his life to bowling. However, I was lucky enough to see and to converse with him recently at the Orange County Bowling Council meeting.

Frank was a man who not only covered the world of bowling, but he was also man who cared about its’ direction. He traveled to many bowling centers and facilities to keep track of the events and the stories that needed to be told. He certainly got around for a man of his age.

Searching my memories, I found that Frank always had a story to tell. He remembered the days when people were eager to add their names to waiting lists just to get into leagues and tourna-ments. He recalled a time when a bowling center staff relied on a more personal touch to keep its players, and to recruit new ones. Despite a few writing errors and factual inaccuracies, those lessons showed in his work.

In casual conversation, I found that Frank constantly had thought-provoking ideas on how to better the world of bowling. In those times I had the privilege of speaking with him, I came away with a more clear understanding of the history of bowling and how we could learn from it. I am embarrassed to say that I was guilty. Too often, I along with a few others smiled amongst ourselves and discounted his words. In retrospect, I will heed his advice. My future will include recapturing that personal touch, and to find new and improved ways of getting the youth of today involved in bowling.

Thank you Mr. Frank Kietz, Saddleback Lanes and I will miss you.

In Memory of Frank Kietz…

Dear CBN:I had the pleasure to know Frank since my first days in the

bowling business working the front desk at Hollywood Star Lanes back in 1977.

Frank loved to talk and share stories about the “good ol’ days”. I used to tease him and tell him “he IS the good ol’ days”. When Frank and Gordon Murrey, Sr. would talk it was like listening to bowling lore.

People like Gordon and Frank can never be replaced. Their stories go with them. We have always stayed in touch over the last 30 years as I saw him constantly at Bowl Expo and of course the Southern California Bowling Writers Banquets. He was always the first to greet you with a handshake and ask how you are do-ing. Although he lost his wife Betty some years back Frank kept going and going and going. He will sorely be missed throughout Southern California and the bowling world globally.

God Bless you Frank. Thanks for your friendship.Bill Snoberger, Capital Equipment Manager

Murrey International, Inc. Los Angeles, CA 90061

Frank Kietz received his award for 40 years participation in the A.B.C. Tournament, in 1999. He continued to bowl EVERYDAY - until the day of his heart attack. No one ever loved the sport more than Mr. Kietz.

Condolences Simon Rojas WHITTIER—We have lost a Good Man, and Wonderful

Friend, as Simon Rojas, a man well know in Southland Bowling was laid to rest April 15 in Whittier California.

Those who knew Simon were blessed as he was one of a kind. He was the nicest person that you could ever hope to meet.

I met Simon in the early 70’s and back then realized that this is one nice man, and a friendship formed.

Simon was born Jan. 13, 1936 and resided in the San Gabriel area his whole life. He served in the U.S. Army for four years. He worked for Mc Mans Furniture Corp. and retired there after 25 yrs.

He had four children Rodney Rojas, David Rojas, Conic King, and Susie Garcia along with eight grand children and 4 greatgrand children. He used to brag about his kids and grand kids. He was so proud!

Simon loved bowling and was a Director in three of the bowl-ing clubs that were springing up in the late 70’s and early 80’s.. I remember the day he came to bowl in the ABTA and told me that the club he was with had shut down. I thought it over, as he was bowling that day, and knew he would be a good man to join us (ABTA). A Director of the Club should be nice to the Members and Honest and Guess what? He topped them all in those categories!! I told him that I wanted to make the ABTA Go, Build it up, and made him the offer. He found his comfort with the ABTA and was our Director for 23 + years until his passing. Hence he stayed with us until his untimely death. Well, in fact it did build up, and grow and he used to say ‘Boss’ things are going good. You are punching the right buttons! But in retrospect, it was Simon who really helped make it go! Without him the ABTA would not be what it is today. He was a Jewel!

In these many years I have never seen such a people oriented person. He was nice, and honest to a fault, a very caring, and honest worker who gave the bowlers his all. In fact he was THE BEST Worker that You could ever ask for! He did a wonderful job. He never complained, although at times he could have as nothing is perfect, but not him!

He mingled and was nice to all from the bowlers, spectators, Kids, Proprietors and more. Always in a good mood! He talked to everyone!

I was in Wyoming when I was notified of his passing on Thursday. I couldn’t even put the phone down. It was unreal that he would no longer be with us.

We have a staff of 10 and they will miss him more than you can imagine, as will the thousands of bowlers who have crossed his path and of course the many ABTA members

It will be strange not to have him with us, or even stranger never to see him again! To arrive at the tournament with Simon greeting us and helping set up, making our coffee, working diligently and making everyone feel good, and so much more.

We will miss his ready smile and diligent work, his friendly demeanor, happy nature and so many other things that I cannot write as it will take too much space!

He was an ABTA Champion in 1992 at Oak Tress Lanes and recently as runner up at Westminster Lanes in November. But more important is the fact that he was a Champion of a Man.

Its a misfortune that we will not see him again on this earth. He is now above in that better place preparing for a more important tournament! Simon You Were One of a Kind! God Bless. We will miss you immensely. We will never ever forget YOU!

With deepest Sympathy and Sincerity, Bob Smith

CERRITOS—Heather Hoang has returned to ABTA action the past month and she topped the field, winning her second title in 12 years at Super Cerritos Lanes win-ning from the top seeded position finally downing upstart Vic Hilvano in the title match to take home a nice $1,100 top prize in our long awaited return to Cerritos..

The event had a nice 195 en-trants and 11 new members. Every-one had a good time there.

The bowlers produced cut scores of Men +59 and the ladies came in at a decent +14.

We had 45 bowlers advance to the semifinals, including the added Super Seniors Lou Lewis, Manny Loria and Anita Smith of San Diego

Leading the Semis was old time member Heather Hoang (Nguyen)Floyd Burgess who returned at Midtown at a sweet +102, so she would sit out and be able to bowl the title game. Behind her was Gerald Sanchez at +97. Heather will now sit out and bowl for the title. Gerald to receive a first round bye in the single elims and enter in round two. It took a +28 for the men and for the ladies to make the Sweet 16 Single Elim Finals.

The Bowlers took to the lanes. In the first round single elims los-ing were Jenny Le, Jon Reyes, Gibin Kim, Lynn Waldie, Jeff Reyes, Frank Roninol and James Abilar. They got checks of $100 in 10-16th places.

In round two being eliminated were newcomer, Patrick Snyder, Ronnie “Ace” Cordero, Oliver Esmejarda and Leo Tartemella. They cashed in 6-9 th places and $110 each.

Round three had Gerald San-chez and Chris Marquez fallout and receive checks of $120. Now down to three. Talia St.Angelo, and Victor Hilvano meet for the right to bowl for the title against Heather. In this match Vic prevailed over the pretty young lady as he had his

ABTA Director Simon Rojas Passes away! He will be missed!strike ball in a 236-174 game and Talia was 3rd for the second week in a row with fine bowling and a $200 Paycheck with Vic off to the title game vs Heather.

Well, it is now time to pay the horse winners and Victor returned $44 in the horse bets for everyone who had him at $5.00 entry.

The title game was now on and both bowlers were clean through four frames and Heather opened. Vic had a slight edge and then dou-bles to take a nice lead. But he had some problems as in frame 7 left the 2-4-5 and fouled on the spare. In the 8th flagged a 10 pin, left a 1-2-6-10 and opened. Heather on her way with a huge double in frames 8-9 going away due toVic’s misfortune in a 195/230-160/185 game. Great Bowling Heather. Your win which was so well deserved with her 9 lb er to boot (Heart warming).

Nice bowling by Vic who could have won it at Cerritos . He bowled very well til the final frames. He is very competitive!

Talia St Angelso is on a roll and really bowled well in back to back weeks! This is a very competitive improving lady! Great Bowling!

Tourney Hi Qualifiers were Frank Robenhiol for the men +159, and Arenita Griffith led the gals at +124. They both get paid entries.

Mark Huertas was last up in the 3-6-9, but missed on shot 3 (ouch). So we will go for $900 this week at Cal Bowl.

The Match Game was Matched by two of our finest supporters Bart Sanchez, and Lynn Waldie. Their 156 games paid off to split the $3,500, $1,750 each. The Match Game should be worth close to $3,500 this Saturday with the $2,040 carryover pot.!

Match Series worth $324 was Un-Matched at 671 and will carry over we will estimate a $750 Match Series this week, for only $2.00 to enter.

CERRITOS—Team Sweep-stakes was featured Monday at Cer-ritos Lanes, whose team won the 2007-2008 championship for the first time since it began sponsoring. That was years ago before AMF as-sumed management. Unfortunately, Susan (manager) could not attend the luncheon but she was on deck Monday morning to congratulate her team and confirm sponsorship next season.

Although the scoring was not exceptional Monday, the teams were very close to compete in the 16-team prize fund.Valley View #2 topped the list with 2248, followed closely by Cal #23, 2234; Cerritos #1, 2229; Keystone #1, 2214; Del Rio, 2212; Cal #2, 2210; Cerritos #1, 22A01; Bowling News, 2193; Keystone #2, 2174; Cal #1, 2159; Westminster #2, 2140; Valley View #1, 2139; Fountain Bowl, 2121; Westminster #3, 2106; Cerritos #2, 2087 and Linbrook Bowl, 2019.

Individual high scorers were Gladyce Perrin 210-582, Kathy Parrish 563, Kathy Phylow 533, Mary Dixon 530, Tracy Baldwin 514 and Cil Moons 504.

After bowling, almost the entire league traveled to Home Town Buffet, Cerritos, for the awards luncheon and filled the reserved area to overflowing. In addition to members and subs, spouses and friends made the day a gala affair. The food was great and plentiful, especially the super assortment of dessert items, and we thank our hosts, managers Mary and John, for a hospitable visit. Thanks also to Mary Meglemre for making the “50th Year” banner and her many other contributions during the year.

Awards and trophies were pre-sented following lunch and Carol Mancini, Del Rio and Bowling News sponsor, spoke briefly to invite members to join summer league to keep their game sharp un-til the Vegas league starts in August. Also, bowlers were interested in the upcoming “Casino” super day trip next month. It’s open to everybody so call her for more information at Del Rio.

NEXT WEEK: Optional Sin-gles & Doubles is slated at noon Monday, April 21, at The Orleans. Check in time is 11:30 a.m. for 39 members who will compete for more than $1,600 Our thanks to Phyllis Baldwin for being chair-man and to Roberta McNaught for assisting in the annual sweeper and I might add that Roberta is not only President, she’s my right hand and always ready and able to serve the league. Joan Roper will chair the optional high handicap game sidepots, which usually pay two or more places per game, depending on participation.

As the league’s 50th year ends, we look forward to the 51 season and, on a personal note, thanks to bowlers and sponsors for your friendship and support all those years.

Please mark calendars now to attend the 2008-2009 league meet-ing, 10 a.m. Monday, July 21, in Cal Bowl’s conference room.

300 GameBowled in the Pinz Junior ProgramWe are all proud of youGreat Bowling

Pinz Bowling Center

STUDIO CITY — Retirement is a touchy issue; especially in this day and age. We all want to sit back and watch the ocean splash in front of us, but some of us just can’t do that yet. When you talk of finally leaving the job force and watching those waves you always have a perfect way to do it. But our “Brett Favre” may just keep waiting. Barbara Lee has run our junior program for 26 plus years and has never lost her compassion; yet she always says if someone bowls a 300 “I’m outta here”.

PINZ ADULTS You keep bowling and keep trying to get that game with 12 strikes packed together, but did you ever think that a 17 year old kid would do it? Well,he did and at the same bowling center that you bowl at. So, try and top him, before that look at these scores: Tavern Guild: Doc McCoy 235/674, Bob Thomas 257/634, Jeff Pifko 238/629, Naida Angarita 209/591. Twilighters: Phil Cody 248/688, George Cruz 629, Kelly Perdue 278/627, Dane Price 236/625, Al Weinstein 613, Marley Sims 484, Pam Vaughan 202, Laurie Faso 246, Michael Holt 235. Kings and Queens: Kevin Collins 266/718, Brian Restivo 255, Robin Beacham 232, Donald Osborne 226, Jeff Diner 222, Jon Schell 222. Funseekers: Tom Wigmore 257/751, Damond Taylor 267/733, Jim Moore 255/701, Isis Ruiz 214/564, Ronata Longmire 550, Lisa Frobisher 525, Mark Mason 255. S.C.B.L.: Neil Inman 243/662, Mike Malone 655, Stephen Santay 250/650, Jim Foltyn 237/641, Bob Thomas 613, Tony Laanan 235, Danny Gonzales 234. 44 Blue: Gary Hubb 458, Jeff Lewis 182.

PINZ JUNIORS “Congratulations, Brittlan Halpern bowling a 300. Good Job! You are my first junior bowler to accomplish that, and I have been around a long time. You are a great bowler and a great person. I wish you all the luck in the world with school and your future. You have been a great example to all our bowlers here at Pinz. Now retirement looks even closer.” - Barbara Lee, Junior Director. Adult Junior Doubles: ADULT—Brad Spector 227/619, Karie Fisher 197/563. YOUTH—Treven Goldsmith 247/644, Jamie Spec-tor 206/513. Senior Scratch: Brittlan Halpern “300/979”, Treven Goldsmith 268/847, Nikolai Berk 255/840, Teddy Galvan 225/755, Adam Lander 226/747. Senior Galaxies: Noah Lander 173/453, Brian Ingoldsby 176/428, Mario Vargas 167/391, Rachel Acacio 144/375, Jonathan Berk 339, Ty Paiali 129. Junior Stars: Nicole Martinez 145/352, JJ Lim 90/253, Nicholas Martinez 81/188. Pee Wees: Jeffery Lim 83/150.

PINZ SENIORS/LADIES Do you have kids or grandkids that bowl? Or maybe want to bowl? Well, sign them up, obviously we do a great job of coaching and making bowler’s out of anybody. We want everybody to acknowledge the achievement that Brittlan has garnered with his 300. You guys bowled good too, here’s the scores: Happy Timers: Ken Burkenheim 208/538, Sol Karnovitz 199515, Ruth Swick 170/437, Sylvia Good 154/415, Cynthia Burkenheim 415. Bowler of the Week: Well, we should be upset that you are making Barbara consider retirement with your perfect game, but we can’t stop smiling about your 300 game. Brittlan Halpern, you are the junior bowler that finally bowled a 300. You are the bar for which each of us has to look up at. Just remember; it only gets better with age, youngun. Sweetness Quote of the Week: Perfectionism is simply putting a limit on your future. When you have an idea of perfect in your mind, you open the door to constantly comparing what you have now with what you want. That type of self criticism is significantly deterring. John Eliot Ph.D, Reverse Psycholgist.

J.T. ‘Action’ Jackson Wins ABT Championship at AMF Valley View

GARDEN GROVE—J.T. Jackson won his Amateur Bowlers Tour (ABT) championship at AMF Valley View on Saturday, March 29, 2008 during our one-day 4-game Beat-the-Board tour-nament. J.T. bowled in our 6PM squad and shot games of 271, 270, 234 and 232 with handicap for a series total of 1007 and the $750 1st place prize plus $800 from the Progressive Pot. John Grieco, Sr. of Harbor City came in second shooting a 977 four game handicap series for $375. In third place was Stevie Hou of Long Beach shooting a 971 handicap series and won $200.

Our newest champion, J.T. Jackson is an entertainer. You have probably seen J.T. in various commercials on TV and he will be in a reality show this summer. J.T. has been bowling for about 5 years. J.T. currently bowls at Santa Clarita Lanes and has a 300 game and 816 series to his credit. J.T. was using a Lane 1 Liberator drilled by Rusty, Brandon and Karl and wanted to thank them for drilling and fitting his equipment. J.T. wanted to thank his family and friends for their support. J.T. plans on using his winnings to pay bills and bowl in more tournaments. J.T. also wanted to thank AMF Valley View for hosting the tournament and ABT Orange County staff and directors for running an outstanding tournament

Joshua James was the winner of the optional 4-game Scratch Sweeper and $150 with an 842 scratch series. Stevie Hou came in second shooting an 839 series for $100. John Daily came in third with an 836 series for $50.

John Grieco, Sr. was the winner of the optional Senior Sweeper with a 977 handicap series, taking home a check for $75. Daryl Brandt of Signal Hill came in second for $55 with a series of 933 and Jim Ellis of Huntington Beach came in third shooting a 918 series and received a check for $30.

The Mystery Game Pot game and score were drawn after our final squad. Game #2 was the game drawn. The first chance score of 148 (possibly good for $300) was drawn. Our second chance score (possibly good for $150) was 248. The third chance score (possibly good for $75) was 163. There were no winners. The Mystery Pot is available to all members (Classic and Masters) and only costs $5.

The ABT staff and membership would like to thank the manage-ment and staff at AMF Valley View for hosting our tournament. Our next scheduled event will be April 19, 2008 at Westminster Lanes. The address for Westminster Lanes is 6471 Westmin-ster Avenue in the city of Westminster. Their phone number is 714.893.5005. This will be a 4-game beat the board tournament with squads at 2, 4 and 6PM. All members (Classic and Masters) are eligible. Handicap will be 80% of 225 for this tournament. We will offer $100 sidepots on each squad with just 20 entrants, as well as optional brackets for each squad. The entry fee for this tournament is $55. First place will be $1000 with 100 entries. First place with full Progressive will offer an estimated 1st place prize of $1800 with 100 entries.

We hope to see you at Westminster Lanes April 19!

Inland Empire NABI Champion Wendell Rainwater

LAKE ELSINORE—We want to thank Trevi Zone, our host, for our 2 week tournament, especially to Jeff Welker & Adam Wil-liams for their support. Our new champion is Wendell Rainwater, who won with his Storm Assassin, drilled by Mike at AMF Firebird Lanes in Salem, Oregon. Wendell has been bowling for about 8 years & worked at Deercreek Lanes in 2005.

He enjoys basketball & likes to work on muscle cars. Wendell enjoys new experiences, living in Florida for a time as well as in Oregon: now back in California, working for his friend, Mario Banuelos, a NABI bowlier, in Mario’s pesticide business Wendell won $700 & a champion shirt. Congratulations Wendell!

The first week of our 2 week tournament got off to a great start at Trevi. We had 4 squads, with 8 making it to the semi-finals for April 12. They were : Antonio Vega, Adam Williams, Dale Jones, Mike Yellen, Kathleen Doolen, Guy Clear, Jeff Welker & Jeff Swanson. We gave a $25.Shell gas card to the high qualifier of each squad. They went to Mike Yellen, who won 2 gas cards (since he was high qualifier in the 1st & the 4th squads), Adam Williams & Antonio Vega.

The high qualifier of the day, bowling a fantastic 737 series was Antonio Vega, who won the Ebonite NVS. Our $50 sidepot winners were: Don Eide, Mike Yellen, Guy Clear, Adam Williams (2), Jeff Welker, Jeff Swanson, Kathleen Doolen & Rachel Brach For our 2nd week, we had 3 squads, with a separate qualifing from the 1st week.

We had 11 to advance to the semi-finals to join the 8 from last week. The 11 who made it were: Robert Cervantes, Jamescart Alar-cio, Wendell Rainwater, Tom Jones, Matt Weimar, Wally White, Jay Shackelford, Kerry Lucka, Donald Pulliam, Michael Gray, & Russell Valentine he winner of the Ebonite Raid for high qualifier to advance to the semi-finals, was Matt Weimar for bowling an awesome 769 high series

Our $50 sidepot winners for the 2nd week were: Kerry Lucka (2), Dale Jones, Tom Jones, Russell Valentine, Wally White, Brian Watkins, Jamescart Alarcio & Adam Williams. The $20 2nd place sidepot winners were: Kerry Lucka, Matt Weimar (2). Our semi-final 50 sidepot winners were: Jay Shackelford, Adam Williams & Robert Cervantes.

In the semi-finals, after 3 games, the final 5 advanced to the stepladder. We began with Antonio Vega bowling Wendell Rainwa-ter. Antonio bowled a 196 to Wendell’s 226. Wendell then bowled Robert Cervantes. Robert bowled a great 282, however, Wendell was determined & bowled a 295.

Wendell went on to bowl Adam Williams. Adam bowled a 211 to Wendell’s 241. Wendell, then climbed to the top to bowl Tom Jones, the high qualifier in the semi-finals. Tom bowled a 204 to Wendell’s 261 for Wendell to win.

Congratulations to all who participated in a great time at Trevi. On Sat., April 19, we are looking forward to Arlington Lanes, another great house to bowl. See our ad in the Bowling News this week! See ya there!

was threatened more than once by Duke.

Bohn had his first chance to take a two-strike advantage when Duke left another 10-pin in the fourth frame but Bohn also left a 10-pin and the score remained 3-2.

After both bowlers struck in the fifth frame, Duke left the four-pin in the sixth giving Bohn a second chance to put him on the ropes, but despite a pocket hit he left the 7-pin to keep Duke in the match.

Duke pulled even with his fourth strike in the seventh but Bohn responded to put himself one strike away from victory. After Duke struck for the fifth time, Bohn needed one strike for victory. With $150,000 on the line, Bohn threw a perfect shot to win in his Roll to Riches debut.

“What an unbelievable day,” Bohn (Jackson, N.J.) said. “I never dreamed this could come true. Thank God it did, because I need the money for a college fund. I’ve got a couple kids on their way there.

“You dream of getting up in the 10th - or sixth frame as it was today – and throwing the great shot you want to win a great title or money. You dream it many times and for it to come true is a great feeling.”

Bohn advanced to the title match with a 160-106 win over his brother-in-law, Kent (New-ark, N.Y.). Bohn recovered from a spare in the second to strike with his final six shots for the win. All Elimination Round and Semifinal Round contests featured six-frame matches with a max score of 180.

Duke (Clermont, Fla.) ad-vanced to the final match for the second consecutive season with a 146-124 win over two-time Motel 6 Roll to Riches winner Chris Barnes (Double Oak, Texas). Duke trailed early but rallied after Barnes had back-to-back nine spares in the fourth and fifth frames and Duke capitalized by striking with his final five shots. That forced Barnes to double and get nine pins for the win but Barnes left the 2-10 with his first shot in the 10th to give Duke the come-from-behind win.

Barnes had advanced with a 137-117 win over Sean Rash (Wichita, Kan.), who was mak-ing his Roll to Riches debut, while Kent defeated Michael Haugen Jr. (Cave Creek, Ariz.), who also making his first Roll to Riches appearance.

The event started with the Challenge Round, where bowl-ers participated in one-ball roll offs with the lowest score after each frame moving into the Elimination Round and the two surviving bowlers earning byes into the Semifinal Round. In the first roll-off, Rash had a six-count to drop into the Elimina-tion Round while Haugen was the next bowler knocked out with an eight count.

In the third round, Barnes and Kent managed nine counts while Duke and Bohn both struck to earn the two byes into the Semifinal Round. Bohn’s victory meant that all four Motel 6 Roll to Riches events have been won by a bowler who earned a bye into the Semifinal Round through the Challenge Round.

National Deaf Bowling NewsStogryn Back with 856 in

Deaf Travel at AMF Cerritosby Connie Marchione

CERRITOS—After failing to hit a 800 in previous So. Calif. Deaf Traveling League’s stop, Darrell Stogryn is back leading the league’s honor roll with 856 at AMF Cerritos Bowl. Darrell started fairly with 182 but finished strongly with 210-226-238 to lead two others with 800’s.

Francisco Navarro and Bob Jones were the two. Navarro had the day’s high game with 245 after a poor start of 157 and ended with 218 and 196 for 817. Jones had steady games of 204-190-212-196 for 802.

Andy Lorenzo and Gardy Rodgers made it with 728 and 710 while other bowlers struggled on the tough Cerritos lanes.

Navarro and Rodgers along with their entire Los Angeles team ganged up on Darrell’s El Camino Village for a 20-5 shellacking and moved closer to first place. Darrell did not get enough help from his team as he himself had 4 of his team’s 5 points.

The leader Riverside clung to first, now just 1 and half point lead with a narrow 13-12 win over Jones’ S F Valley. Riverside’s Lorenzo carried the burden with 5 points as Ed Abakumoff was absent with illness and the team took the series.

The league thanks AMF Cerritos management and staff for the hosting courtesy and challenging lane conditions. The next travel date will be April 27 at Brunswick Covina Bowl.

WRITERS MOURNS LOSS OF TWO LONG TIME FRIENDSBeing deaf, I am always the last one to know about tragic

happenings. I did not get the news until one or two weeks after it happened. News did not spread fast to me.

Long time writer and friend, Joe Lyou passed away and I first knew about his death when I read the Bowling News. I was shocked in disbelief because I knew he was in Las Vegas for the Golden Ladies Tournament, one of his favorite. My condolences go to his family.

Lyou was first to welcome me to the Southern California Bow-ing Writers as a new member thirty-something years ago. I have great respect for him because everytime he got a letter or story about the deaf in bowling he turned it over to me to take care of. Once a teacher of a mainstream school with deaf students inquired Lyou about holding a deaf tournament for deaf students of several mainstream schools, Joe referred me to her and I helped her get it started. It was a success with 4 schools but sadly it lasted one year.

Last week a fellow writer member friend, Ray Rosenbaum surprised me when he faxed me asking me, did our long time friend writer Frank Kietz die. I faxed back that I knew nothing about it and told him to call Carol at the Bowling News to find out. Carol told him that Kietz passed away in his sleep after a stroke. It was very sad for us to know. My condolences though late go to Kietz family.

Kietz, like Lyou also passed on to me the news of deaf bowl-ing. Once I asked Frank to persuade a president of a company with deaf employees to let me handle the big deaf tournament he was planning.

The tournament was the largest and most lavish the deaf bowlers ever had. Then it was never repeated as the company folded up.

Many of the writers, who had been good to me, like Alan Post, Mel Buether, Paul Henniger and Bob Weaver had passed and I got the news a week or more late. The only funeral I attended was the one of my good friends, Don Snyder of Los Angeles Times.

MOTOWN WELCOMES 2008 USBC WOMEN’S

CHAMPIONSHIPS CANTON, Mich.—Motown

tempted female bowlers from across the United States with the dulcet tones of a Temptations style singer at the opening ceremonies for the 2008 United States Bowling Congress Women’s Championships at Super Bowl Lanes in suburban Detroit.

Veteran entertainer Larry John-son, who tours as part of a Tempta-tions review, brought the crowd to its feet with Stevie Wonder, the Temptations and Smokey Robinson classics, getting the event off to a rousing start.

Johnson was preceded by USBC Hall of Famer and Detroit area native Cheryl Daniels, who performed the national anthem, and the presentation of the colors by Detroit’s Southwestern High School Prospectors Junior ROTC.

Detroit hosted the event in 1928 and 1953 and set the stage for a warm third statewide welcome. Luminaries ranging from local to national appeared in person or sent video messages to the first wave of about 36,000 bowlers as the 88 days of competition officially began.

Super Bowl underwent consid-erable sprucing up and structural change to accommodate the event under one roof, and the commu-nity welcomed bowlers along Ford Road with large, colorful hand-painted bowling pins throughout that main travel route.

“We’ve been trying since 1999 to have this in Detroit,” said Mark Voight of Farmington Hills, Mich., the Community Bowling Centers proprietor. After losing out to Fort Lauderdale and Tulsa to hold the tournament several years ago, they formulated a plan of attack: “We hugged all 5,000 delegates in 2002.”

“The first time, we weren’t prepared for why people wouldn’t want to come,” said Libbi Fletcher of Warren, Mich., President of the Metro Detroit USBC and a member of the USBC Board of Directors. “So we went back and changed our focus on really wanting them here, and it worked.”

The ceremonial team mass ball shot followed the opening ball thrown by U.S. Air Force Brigadier General Carol Ann Fausone, As-sistant Adjunct for Veterans Affairs in Michigan.

The USBC Women’s Champi-onships are sponsored by Eldorado, Silver Legacy and Circus Circus Hotel/Casinos in Reno, Nev., as well as Kegel, the official lane maintenance provider.
