This year is passing so quickly. We are already in September. It seems July and August just zipped by. Time passes fast when you are having fun. In July we held our fundraiser drawing as planned at the Houston Yacht Club. I would like to congratulate the winners, Malin La Place who won the 125cc dirt bike, Dennis (not sure of last name) won the 50cc Four Wheeler, and Jane & John Krommenhoek who won the two Kayaks. Educational Department Update

We’ve had a very busy summer, and we’re planning a busy fall. Come join us for a course or let me know if there is a seminar you’d like to attend. I’m in and out these days, so email me at [email protected] please.

ABC

We had a class each in June and August. The rest of the classes for 2018 are on these Saturdays

22 September 20 October 10 November 15 December

SEAMANSHIP

A class has finished and will take the exam on 18 September. Expect a new class to begin 20 or 24 September with me and other instructors. Let me know your date preference.

PILOTING

We are waiting for grades on an earlier class by Leroy Burkholder.

Expect another class to start in late fall.

ADVANCED PILOTING

An AP class finished recently, and we may have another AP class this fall by request. Let me know if you are ready for this course.

JUNIOR NAVIGATION

JN continues with Leroy Burkholder for some students, but at least one test and sight folder have been submitted by a star student*.

NAVIGATION

A small class is building now for Peter Aronstam to teach.

MARINE COMMUNICATIONS

One student has completed the course and is awaiting test results. Expect a new course later this fall by Leroy Burkholder

ELECTRONIC NAVIGATION

Expect this course in mid October with Tony Bilello.

WEATHER COURSE

The students in Peter Aronstam‘s class recently tested and should receive grades in September or sooner.

WEATHER SEMINAR

Peter Aronstam presented the Basic Weather and Forecasting seminar to a group of Jeanneau owners and the local dealers who sailed to LYC for Peter’s presentation. Candy Capuano arranged this very suc-cessful event with 15 attendees who were quite impressed.

THANK YOU SEA SCOUTS

During the September ABC class, Anne Bertelsmann and Lisa Robinson offered to share their Sea Scout workday HOT lunch with us, and we accepted. Anne’s sloppy joes smelled SO good, we were powerless to refuse. Chris Robinson assured us that his mom’s BIG chocolate chip cookies were great, and he was absolutely correct. The Sea Scouts offered to help with anything we needed too. My ABC class was thor-oughly impressed, and I had a chance to show off Sea Scout awards and relate how many ways they help us. This was an example of serendipity at its finest.

Gabby

So there we were on the way home from HYC and suddenly I

had a noisy hitchhiker on the rail. I said,” Hey there feather-

legs, did you enjoy the food at our dock party July 4?”

Gabby answered,”Oh did I ever. I have never seen such

hor’sdoevoures (gulls can’t spell) and the hot dogs, sausage,

and hamburgers were great! There must have been a hun-

dred people there (gulls can’t count either).”

“There were over 35 people there and no one went hungry”, I

corrected. “I noticed you brought quite a few of your friends

along.”

“Absolutely, the leftovers were greatly appreciated and some-

one left a glass of wine unattended which we birds greatly

appreciated,” he slurred. “Nobody could fly away until all the

noise started. What was that all about?”

“Those were fireworks celebrating our great nations birth-

day.” I informed him.

“Well, I think you do better just by overeating with less

noise.” He burped. Then he departed in an almost straight

line.

Lost and Found

Are you missing your favorite wine opener, a very

nice tote bag, your hat that keeps the sun at bay

or a very nice cane?

They can be found at our squadron building.

District 21 Fall Conference

Oklahoma City Sail and Power Squadron will be

our host for the D/21 Fall Conference.

Final details will be out soon.

If you wanted to do something really different and unusual on the first Friday in August, you should have joined GBSPS, at Franca's Real Italian restaurant on Nasa Rd. 1. About thirty people were present for Ital-ian food and the play, "Born Yesterday", a film that starred Billie Holiday, and made her famous. She won the Best Actress award at the Oscars in 1951 for her performance. Many thanks to Dianne Hammond for arranging this unique meeting for us. ******* Dave Mulcahy's young granddaughter, Sally, had brain surgery lately and Dave says there are no visible signs of the surgery and they had a good report afterward. To quote Dave, "God is Good". We agree. What good news! Also, Congratulations to Clare, Dave's daughter, and Sally's mother, who is expecting another child in February. Will it be a boy or a girl? Keep us posted, Dave, and congratulations to you too. It sounds like it's been a traumatic and eventful time for all of you lately. We hope there will be smoother waters ahead. ******* P/C Lillian Dickerman, is doing fine in the assisted living facility where she has been staying for years. She was really looking forward to a big four day weekend at the beach, which she planned to attend in Galveston. Her son from California and several other family members were planning to be there, includ-ing her niece from France and another one from Charleston. We miss seeing you, Lillian. and were so happy to hear your upbeat, cheerful voice. ******* Malin La Place and Aaron Williams have been working all summer. Congratulations to Malin, who has finished an internship for her Master's degree. Aaron has been busy clearing the streets in Galveston amid the huge crowds that have packed Galveston during the summer. Tourists, especially, find parking places just about anywhere, regardless of whether they are legal or not. Thanks, Aaron, for keeping the streets open and clear for the rest of us. ******* Speaking of streets, Jennifer Herzburg is working with her Lee College students, helping them paint a mural in an alley on Texas Avenue in Baytown. Thanks for helping beautify our alleys and surroundings, Jennifer. That sounds like a very exhausting and hot, but worthwhile endeavor. Maybe you could send our Editor a picture of the mural when it's finished. We'd love to see it. ******* It was good to get a note from Marion Herndon, Past Commodore of the TMCA race with GBCA. She also volunteers with the Sailing Angels and is interested in joining our group. We have Marian and Charles Scott to thank for inviting her to join us. We'd love to have you and we hear people are working on the pro-cess and paper work involved. ******* Candy Capuano has had a busy summer. She has sailed, vacationed on the Gulf coast of Mississippi and taken her granddaughter to Galveston for an overnight trip to admire and marvel over the Blood moon. She says to look for her on Facebook to keep up with her many activities since she has summers off now. She's looking forward to the shrimp boil in September and hopes to see all of us there. This N That continued from page 9

Marian and Charles Scott and close friends Dianne and Jim Hammond are all busy packing for a trip they are taking together of the Baltic Sea area. The first leg of their journey involves flying to London, fol-lowed by boarding a ship that will be taking them to Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Russia, Finland and Ger-many, as well as stops in other countries and cities. Sounds like a fabulous trip. Have fun and come back to us safe and sound. ******* Steve Benson and Kathleen Nau just installed their newly reupholstered sofa and chair into their salon. They said the upholsterer did a fantastic job and to call them if you need a referral. They are still waiting for the canvas to be finished, since December, in fact. They're not so happy about that. ******* Charles Scott has been varnishing his trawler for two weeks. The project will probably take all summer and fall with plenty of sweat and elbow grease involved. ******* Jane and John Krommenhoek are looking forward to a Viking river cruise from Paris to the beaches of Normandy. They said we will get more details when they get back. Why don't you write a little article about it for the BAY BREEZE? Jim Hammond plans to write a small article about their cruise of the Baltic. All boaters love to hear stories about cruises involving people we know. ******* Congratulations to Susan and John Morawski who recently celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary at a family party in Fort Worth given by their daughters, Erin and Shaun, and their families. You look too young. Are you sure it was your fiftieth? ******* Linton Arbaugh's boat, Come By Chance, isn't going anywhere until he catches up on maintenance. He says it sure looks pretty as a Slip Queen. It's anchored at Seabrook Marina, in case you'd like to check it out. ******* After lots of inquiries by this reporter, we think this interesting, unsigned card was from James Liston, but I was unable to reach him. And the following is a quote. "My boat neighbor, Wayne, his wife Suzanne and I joined TMCA for the cruise to Freeport. However, we chose to do it our way as the winds were not favor-able to sail under a full moon (and eclipse), so we motored to Pelican Reef Marina and had a delicious dinner at their restaurant , Steak 13. (They have a special on Thursday- Prime Rib for twenty dollars) Not to miss. Next day we were off through the ICW to Freeport. Yes, we did get stuck but I was not at the helm and we got in safely to Harbor Bridge Marina. Next evening we had the most beautiful sail through the night only to arrive a little early (at dark) on the jetties. Everything went easy though and Onyx, the dog, was the happiest one on arrival." ******* Get well wishes to Glenn Mathis, who is recovering from carotid artery surgery. He's home and busy sending his friends emails, but he says he's still weak as a kitten. Sorry to tell you, Glenn, but that's the part of the surgery, they don't tell you about.

04 July Rendezvous at Houston Yacht Club

The July 4th HYC Rendezvous was a great success with over 30 participants and a total of three vessels making the trip. Our Executive Officer, James Liston is a member of the Houston Yacht Club so his boat was already there, however, he was instrumental in making things go smoothly by interacting with Harbor Master Dave Haamp. The staff at HYC, as usual, was very gracious and we really appreciate their help. The three boats that made the trip were: 1) No Regrets captained by Katharina Upchurch and Crew. 2) Calypso captained by Charles Scott and crew. 3) Desiree captained by Charles Gautier and crew. After the weather cleared up, the cooking teams got busy so folks would have food by early afternoon. Charles Scott and the cooking team on Calypso started things off with his world famous all beef hot dogs with relish, mustard and two types of sauerkraut. Candy Capauno led the cooking team on Desiree to put together her fantastic hamburgers with all the fixins. Everyone also brought many varieties of cakes, fruit salads , cookies and even some really nice rum cake that didn't last five minutes (I wonder why?). I'm sure everyone gained a few pounds that day. Scott and Claire McDonald as well as their daughter Fiona represented HSPS, our sister squadron, de-spite the rough weather earlier in the day that looked as if the holiday festivities would be a washout. A number of other HSPS members were going to make the trip but road flooding stopped them cold. We missed them but hope to see them at the next rendezvous at Tiki Island on Labor Day. The HYC fireworks display that evening was awesome and we were actually able to see three or four other displays all around Galveston Bay while listening to patriotic music on our radios simultaneously. It was a grand evening enjoyed by all. All three boats were shuttled back to Clear Lake safely the next day. Katharina Upchurch chose to bring No Regrets, a 35ft Beneteau sailboat, single handed back home, despite the gathering thunderheads over Galveston Bay. This was a major accomplishment and a first for her. Congratulations Katharina. Many thanks to all who helped make this rendezvous a really nice event and hope to see everyone on the next one. USPS Governing Board Meeting in Minneapolis, MN

I have attended numerous Annual and Governing Board meetings during the many years that I have been a

member of Galveston Bay Squadron. There have been very few times that the current Commander of our

squadron has not attended. I am particularly proud that this year our Commander, Betty Carr, not only at-

tended, but was the only commander within our district that was present. Thank you Betty for representing

our squadron.

Attendance at these meetings keeps getting smaller and smaller. Some say it is the cost involved. They are

costly to attend and perhaps that is one of the reasons for the decline in attendance. I personally feel that

todays technology of email, conference calling, etc., is the culprit. But nothing beats face to face contact with

our fellow squadron members.

District Commander Smoke Williams and Deb, D/Lt/C Janet Boerner, R/C Claire and P/R/C Scott

McDonald, V/C Howard Yoas and Mary Pierpont, P/R/C Bruce Albertson, P/C Ray Kearney and I repre-

sented our district at this meeting. It was fun being with all of you.

An afternoon dinner cruise aboard the BELLA VISTA on Lake

Minnetonka. It is a very large lake and there were many sail and

power boats on the water that evening. Their boating season is

short so they make the most of a beautiful warm, sunny after-

Merit Mark time is almost here

As your Merit Mark (MM) chair, it means it is time for me to earn my MM by gathering info from whatever source is available. Then that info is put into the DB2000 MM program for the Commander and Eboard to review. The Cdr is the one that actually approves the MM recommendations, but the Cdr does consult the E-board to be sure that no one is missed for a recommendation.

The USPS C/C is the only one that actually awards a MM. A MM is your only acknowledgment from USPS for the extra work you did during the year to keep our squadron a viable organization. The MM year starts 01 Jan. and is over 31 Dec. Recommendations are usually submitted by the chair of an activity but you can submit your own recommendation if you were the committee chair and the only member of the committee, to Cdr Betty Carr with a copy to me, Ray T. Kearney, [email protected] . This just saves Betty time having to forward your email to me.

The DEADLINE for submitting our first MM report is 15 November. Late submittals can be made at any time after the early deadline.

Members that do SUBSTANTIAL WORK FOR USPS, be it National, District, or Squadron earn a Merit Mark. Note that a MM requires SUBSTANTIAL WORK for USPS. Attending parties, taking classes, going to monthly meetings, attending a raft up, is part of the privilege of being a member and does not count. However, the members that provided the WORK to make these things happen are rewarded for the their efforts with a MM. It seems to me that it takes about 20 hours of substantial work.

Example: maybe 4 hours working at 2 boat shows for 8 hours, 8 hours doing CoCh work, 4 hrs on the cruise and rendezvous committee.

Attending a meeting to give a report counts, Attending a meeting to accept assignments for an activity counts, Attending a meeting as a delegate to a district or national conference from our squadron counts along with one or more other activities.

Teaching two classes or proctoring 4 classes, making 10 VSCs, or being a member of the telephone committee making regular monthly calls does counts.

Just attending a meeting as a curious member does not count. Mileage and expenses to and from the meetings does not count.

The hours worked do not have to be on the same committee, they could be worked on 2-6 different commit-tees.

I would appreciate you getting you’re info to us by 24 Oct. Then the report will be ready for the E-board to review the recommendations 06 Nov. The earlier we can get the MM recommendations, the happier the Area Monitor will be. He is just another human volunteer that does a lot of work for one MM just like the rest of us.

This is not a rocket science project; just do the best you can.

From the Galley

Slow Cooker Borracho Beans

Ingredients:

1 pound dried pinto beans

1 (12 ounce) Mexican beer

6 cups water

2 garlic cloves

1 pound thick-cut bacon

1 white onion, chopped

3 roma tomatoes, chopped

1 to 2 jalapenos, chopped (optional)

1 tablespoon salt

Fresh cilantro, for garnish

Directions:

Place beans in a colander, rinse the beans thoroughly with cool water.

Soak your beans for 30 minutes to 1 hour before cooking.

Add soaked beans, beer, water, and garlic to slow cooker.

Chop bacon into 1/2 inch pieces and fry in a large skillet until crispy; drain and set aside.

Add the onions to the skillet and cook, stirring frequently to loosen the brown bits left behind in the pan from

the bacon, for 2 to 3 minutes.

Add tomatoes and jalapenos (if using) and cook, continuing to stir and incorporate leftover bits from the skil-

let, keeping all the delicious goodness for 2 to 3 minutes. Remove from heat.

Add the contents of the skillet to the slow cooker, along with the cooked bacon. Add salt and stir until well

combined.

Cover and cook on low for 7 to 8 hours.

Garnish with cilantro and serve warm.
