1300L 1776: America and Britain at War* MCCULLOUGH
But from this point on, the citizen-soldiers of Washington’s army were no longer to be ghting only for the defense of their country, or for their rightful liberties as freebornEnglishmen, as they had at Lexington and Concord, Bunker Hill and through the long siege at Boston. It was now a proudly proclaimed, all-out war for an independentAmerica, a new America, and thus a new day of freedom and equality. At his home in Newport, Nathanael Greene’s mentor, the Reverend Ezra Stiles, wrote in his diary almostin disbelief: us the Congress has tied a Gordian knot, which the Parl [iament] will nd they can neither cut, nor untie. e thirteen united colonies now rise into anIndependent Republic among the kingdoms, states, and empires on earth... And have I lived to see such an important and astonishing revolution?
900L We are the Ship: The Story of Negro League Baseball NELSON
Rube ran his ball club like it was a major league team. Most Negro teams back then weren’t very well organized. Didn’talways have enough equipment or even matching uniforms. Most times they went from game to game scattered among dierent cars, or sometimes they’d even have to “hobo” — which means hitch a ride on the back of someone’s truck to get to the next town for a game. But not Rube’s team. ey were always well equipped, with clean, new uniforms, bats, and balls. ey rode to the games in fancy Pullman cars Rube rented and hitched to the back of the train. It was something to see that group of Negroes stepping out of thetrain, dressed in suits and hats. ey were big-leaguers.
300L Princess Posey and the Next-Door Dog GREENE
“We have to stop now,” said Miss Lee. “It’s time for reading.” “Ohhh...” A disappointed sound went up around the circle. “Here’s what we’ll do.” Miss Lee stood up. “You are all very interested in dogs. So this week, you can writea story about your own dog or pet. en you can read it to the class.” Everyone got excited again. Except Posey. She didn’t have a pet. Not a dog. Not a cat. Not a hamster. “ose of you who don’t have a pet,” Miss Lee said, “canwrite about the pet you hope to own someday.” Miss Lee had saved the day! Now Posey had something to write about, too. Posey told her mom about Luca’s puppy on the way home.

Dr. John D. Barge, State School Superintendent
Dear P
arents,
Reading is a critical skill, and research has shown that a student’s reading skills are highly predictive of future
success in school. In adopting rigorous curricular standards, theG
eorgia Departm
ent of Education reaffirm
ed its com
mitm
ent to ensure that every student has an opportunity to become a good reader and is provided the
foundation necessary to be ready for college and careers.
Inaddition to this rigorous curriculum
,the Departm
ent has several initiatives focusing onliteracy, including the
Striving Reader C
omprehensive Literacy initiative and the Sum
mer R
eading Challenge. The
Governor’s R
eading M
entor Initiative is focusing on the state’s most challenged schools
to ensure Georgia students read on grade level
by the end of third-grade.
We are also very pleased to provide Lexile®
measures –
a measure of a student’s reading ability
– on selected test reports for our students.
As a w
ay to monitor how
a student’s reading ability is developing,the Lexile®
Framew
ork for R
eading has been linked with the E
nglish language arts End-of-Course Tests (EO
CT) and
the reading tests for the
Criterion-R
eferenced Com
petency Test (CR
CT) and the C
riterion-Referenced C
ompetency Tests-M
odified (C
RC
T-M) program
s. Teachers, students and parents may gauge a student's reading ability in grades 3 through 8
and twice in high school by receiving a Lexile m
easure along with results from
these tests.
A Lexile measure can inform
us about a student’s reading ability. It can also indicate the text com
plexity of reading m
aterial. Parents, teachers and students can use this m
easure to determine if a text is too easy, too difficult or just
right for a student. This Lexile measure is m
ore than a score - it is a tool to assist students, parents and teachers in selecting m
aterial for students’ current reading comprehension
and monitoring progress tow
ard college and career readiness.
I encourage parents to use Lexile measures as one w
ay to strengthen the school-home connection. Students are
likely to read more if they are able to choose books that m
atch their current reading level. The Lexile® M
ap provides a sam
pling of titles matched to appropriate levels of reading ability. The “Find a B
ook” search tool can help students and parents build custom
reading lists based on Lexile range and personal interests and to check the availability of books at the local library.S
umm
er reading lists can help prevent the summ
er learning loss that far too many
students experience
To learn more about Lexile m
easures, please visit ww

eworkforreading.aspx. You w
ill be able to access the popular “Find a B
ook” tool and other helpful guidance on selecting reading material m
atched to your student’s reading ability. These resources can be used to support and m
onitor a child’s progress toward becom
ing a better reader.
Parents, please join me, the G
eorgia Departm
ent of Education and your children’s teachers in this
ongoing effort tom
ake every student in Georgia a successful reader. R
eading is the key to the future.
Sincerely,
Dr. John D
. Barge
