Dr. John D. Barge, State School Superintendent

Dear P

arents,

Reading is a critical skill, and research has shown that a student’s reading skills are highly predictive of future

success in school. In adopting rigorous curricular standards, theG

eorgia Departm

ent of Education reaffirm

ed its com

mitm

ent to ensure that every student has an opportunity to become a good reader and is provided the

foundation necessary to be ready for college and careers.

Inaddition to this rigorous curriculum

,the Departm

ent has several initiatives focusing onliteracy, including the

Striving Reader C

omprehensive Literacy initiative and the Sum

mer R

eading Challenge. The

Governor’s R

eading M

entor Initiative is focusing on the state’s most challenged schools

to ensure Georgia students read on grade level

by the end of third-grade.

We are also very pleased to provide Lexile®

measures –

a measure of a student’s reading ability

– on selected test reports for our students.

As a w

ay to monitor how

a student’s reading ability is developing,the Lexile®

Framew

ork for R

eading has been linked with the E

nglish language arts End-of-Course Tests (EO

CT) and

the reading tests for the

Criterion-R

eferenced Com

petency Test (CR

CT) and the C

riterion-Referenced C

ompetency Tests-M

odified (C

RC

T-M) program

s. Teachers, students and parents may gauge a student's reading ability in grades 3 through 8

and twice in high school by receiving a Lexile m

easure along with results from

these tests.

A Lexile measure can inform

us about a student’s reading ability. It can also indicate the text com

plexity of reading m

aterial. Parents, teachers and students can use this m

easure to determine if a text is too easy, too difficult or just

right for a student. This Lexile measure is m

ore than a score - it is a tool to assist students, parents and teachers in selecting m

aterial for students’ current reading comprehension

and monitoring progress tow

ard college and career readiness.

I encourage parents to use Lexile measures as one w

ay to strengthen the school-home connection. Students are

likely to read more if they are able to choose books that m

atch their current reading level. The Lexile® M

ap provides a sam

pling of titles matched to appropriate levels of reading ability. The “Find a B

ook” search tool can help students and parents build custom

reading lists based on Lexile range and personal interests and to check the availability of books at the local library.S

umm

er reading lists can help prevent the summ

er learning loss that far too many

students experience

To learn more about Lexile m

easures, please visit ww

w.gadoe.org/lexile.aspx and

ww

w.georgiastandards.org/resources/pages/tools/lexilefram

eworkforreading.aspx. You w

ill be able to access the popular “Find a B

ook” tool and other helpful guidance on selecting reading material m

atched to your student’s reading ability. These resources can be used to support and m

onitor a child’s progress toward becom

ing a better reader.

Parents, please join me, the G

eorgia Departm

ent of Education and your children’s teachers in this

ongoing effort tom

ake every student in Georgia a successful reader. R

eading is the key to the future.

Sincerely,

Dr. John D
