DEDICATIONThrough the challenges of the music he has brought to Cranford

High School, he has asked of us a certain height. His friendship andguidance have given many his philosophy of the beauty and disciplineof that music—of life itself—that we may always be on top of the tone.

We, the students of Cranford High School, dedicate our yearbookto James Lenney, to the man and his belief that we will:

"Choose something like a starTo stay our minds onAnd be staid."

Our senior year has been one of excitement and challenge. Through an

introduction to the many aspects of man's knowledge, we have increased our

understanding of ourselves and of our world. We have engaged in many

activities that have made us aware of our abilities and resources and have

united us as a class. We have had a winning basketball team that has heightened

our school spirit and enthusiasm. Our school choir has represented us at the

World's Fair and on television. We have had a united effort to present the

musical "Oklahoma" in the spring. Senior Day and our Senior Dinner helped

to emphasize our class as a unified whole. The class of '65 has had an active

and profitable last year in Cranford High School. We leave the high school

with memories of our days there, and a sense of excitement and purpose in

regard to our future lives.

Mr. MUller gives Glenn helpful hints on howto succeed in Harvard without really trying.

"Speech is the index

Of the mind. " (Seneca)

The English and Foreign LanguageDepartments at Cranford High Schoolhave a common purpose—to perfect theart of communications. Communicationinvolves not only self-expression, butalso appreciation of the expression ofothers. Thus, the Language Arts De-partment concentrates on writing skills,as well as on literary analyses.

Four years of basic English are re-quired for graduation. In addition tothis ,a speech course is offered, with em-

Impromptu composition exercise.

phasis placed on the development oforal self-expression. Junior English iscentered on the evaluation of Americanliterature, while Senior English tracesthe growth of English literature. Inboth courses, teachers frequently em-ploy supplementary materials such asfilms, records, magazine articles, andslides. Finally, active class participationand group discussions make Englishclasses lively and interesting.

In the same way, Foreign Languagecourses emphasize student participationto develop speaking skills. Listeningcomprehension is perfected by use offilms, records and tapes, and readingcomprehension, by exposure to all formsof literature. Writing skills are givenmuch consideration in all years of theforeign languages. Four complete yearsof Latin, French, Spanish, and Germanare offered to students. Aside from indi-vidual skills, a thorough background inthe history and culture of the languagesis imaginatively presented by each lan-guage teacher.

Thus, the Languages Arts Departmentis concerned with the development of askill very vital to everyday life—the artof communications.

A junior class learns some of the basic concepts of problem solving.

A fundamental understanding ofmathematics is essential in today'sworld. With this principle in mind, theCranford High School Mathematics De-partment has sought to offer to its stu-dents comprehensive courses in this areaof study. Courses in intermediate andadvanced algebra, trigonometry, solidgeometry, and business math are offeredto the students, building upon coursestaken in their junior high years. Accel-erated programs of study are offered tothe more advanced students. It is hopedthat through a full and complete studyof mathematics in Cranford High School, the student will gain a better under-standing of the importance of this sub-ject in our changing world.

In our modern, technological age, thesciences have gained a new importancein our lives. In realizing this new im-portance, the Science Department ofCranford High School has sought to of-fer a program of study that will preparetoday's student for an understanding ofthe basic concepts of the various scien-tific fields and their application to thepresent age and the future. Buildingupon the general science and biologycourses of the junior highs, the depart-ment offers both general and collegepreparatory courses in chemistry andphysics, and also a combined, two-yearcourse of the latter two entitled "Chem-ics". Through lectures, problems, read-ings, reports, and laboratory sessions, thestudent is taught and, hopefully, comesto understand the physical world inwhich he lives and the principles andlaws that govern this world.

Realizing the great importance of thesocial sciences in modern society, Cran-ford High School offers its students awide variety of courses in this field ofstudy.

All students are required to completetwo courses in American history in orderto graduate, one a comprehensive studyof the history of the United States andthe other an analysis of the problems ofAmerican democracy. Pupils are alsogiven the privilege of electing coursesin world history and modern Europeanhistory.

There is a new course, Economics, of-fered, this year, exclusively to seniors. It is expected to become a regular partof the school's curriculum.

FOOTBALL

Mr. Grayson seems to be giving Dick somelast minute pointers of strategy.

Although not having an outstanding record the Cranford Highfootball team displayed an aggressive spirit throughout the sea-son. This spirit can be attributed to the devoted coaching effortsput forth by retiring coach Stan Grayson. The Cougars beganthe season with a thrilling 7-6 victory over Linden in the finalminutes via Dick Britton's touchdown pass to John Dreyer andextra point to Tom Nolan, which won the game. The next threegames proved to be rough for the Cranford gridders, droppinga 20-6 loss to a powerful Westfield squad in a game marred byinjuries; next came a heartbreaking 21-12 loss to Clark; and fin-ally a crushing 25-0 defeat at the hands of Rahway. Cranfordbroke into the winning column in the Watchung Conference witha strong 25-13 victory over a fighting Hillside eleven. This hardfought contest was highlighted by the strong line play of DaveVan Brunt, Bill Northcutt, and John Worster. Following a 28-0loss to a high scoring Springfield combine the Cougars reboundedwith a well played 19-0 victory over Roselle High. Althoughlosing the final two games the Cougars definitely outplayed twopowerful foes. First came an 18-7 loss to Scotch Plains in a gamewhich was anyones until the last two minutes, with Wayne(Skip) Burr, Charlie Bolcer, and Rich Schlinger turning in tre-mendous efforts. Then came the Thanksgiving Day tilt withJefferson which proved to be the highlight of the season as wellas a bitter 12-8 defeat, underdog Cranford came through witha valiant effort for Coach Grayson's final game as Cranford Highfootball coach. Co-captains VanBrunt and Nolan received high-est praise from local newspapers by receiving third team all-county and second team all-Watchung Conference respectively, along with Burr, Bolcer, Schlinger, and Dreyer receiving honor-able mention all-Watchung.

SOCCER

In 1964, the Cranford High School SoccerSquad finished up another winning season, com-piling a 5-3-5 slate. Although top contenders forthe Watchung Conference and Union CountyConference crowns, the Cougars were nosed outof the running by a total of five deadlockedgames. While the Cranford club hammeredaway at the opposition in all five contests, fourwere 0-0 deadlocks and one was stopped at 1-1.

Seniors Paul Buonaguro and Willie Loxley ledthe offensive team; Buonaguro garvening a totalof nine goals and a school scoring record for oneseason's play, while Loxley set him up for sevenof the nine tallies. Pat O'Connell, Dave Wardand Phil Coraggio backed them up, while GaryKott and juniors Mark Aaron, Steve Rabin andJohn Bodnar rounded out the line. All-aroundathletes Shelly Mittleman, Wayne Huckel andPaul Lingerfeldt teamed up with Joel Ostro,Tom Pavics and Skip Herman to form Cranford'sburly backfield.

Captains Paul Buonaguro and Shelly Mittle-man, both of whom made the second All-Countyteam while Buonaguro garnered All-State hon-ors, led the squad to the winning season. Thefive brawls in regular seasonal play will go withthe graduating class, but the familiar cry of"Two of you, Two of you!" will be heard bynext year's squad.

CROSS COUNTRYOnce again the spirited Cranford High School harriers

returned to Warinanco Park where, for the third year ina row they established themselves as one of the county'sfinest. Under the direction of Coach Bill Massa theCougars compflted a 9 win 5 loss record. Using his su-perior training techniques, Coach Massa developed agroup of relatively inexperienced runners into a powerfulnucleus. Senior and captain, Tom Albans, and juniorDave Ladanye led the team with clockings of 13:12.5and 13:13.0 for the 2li mile course.

The Cougars got off to a fast start by sweeping thefirst three places and defeating Linden 29 to 30. Aftera loss to Columbia, 40 to 21, the Cougars amassed fivevictories before they were defeated by Hillside on acourse which was unfamiliar to them. After another lossto county and state champions Roselle Catholic, theCougars bounched back on the winning trail by defeat-ing Union and North Hunterdon Regional. But theyclosed out the season with losses to Westfield and Plain-field.

A cross country meet cannot be won by just one toprunner; it must be a team effort. It is for this reasonthat many of the victories can be attributed to seniorlettermen Fred Vogel and Bill Raftery, and junior letter-men Mike DeMicco, Bob Baly, and Robert Read.

BASKETBALL

The Cranford High basketball team amassed one of the bestrecords, 22-2 (at this writing), in the school's history, during thepast campaign. The team, led by All-County Selections WayneHuckel and Shelly Mittleman, and coached by the Union Coun-ty Coach of the Year, Bill Martin, was one of the best in thestate, losing only one game to a New Jersey foe despite a tre-mendous 26-point effort by John Dreyer. This defeat was at thehands of Westfield in the county tournament finals, with a finalscore of 61-53. The other loss was to Linton, 64-61, in theSehenectady Christmas Tournament.

The Cougars handily defeated all other foes, demonstrating anexcellent press and a scorching fast break. Mittleman was thebackcourt ace of the team, and also an outstanding defensiveplayer. Teaming up with Shelly as guard was the only juniorstarter, George Goodwin, an able ball-handler and one of thebest shots on the team. The starting forwards were Huckel andDon Auerbach. Huckel was one of the leading scorers in thecounty and a top rebounder. Many people believed him to bethe best player in the county, and one of the best in the state.Auerbach was a good scorer and rebounder, and usually cov-ered the other team's high scorer. The starting center was bigJohn Dreyer. Though starting out slowly, John has been improv-ing in the latter part of the season, consistently hitting in double-figures and using his 6-5 frame to good advantage off the boards.

Another asset of the team was its good bench. The reserveswere led by senior Mike Jordan and juniors Ed Beadle and TomArchdeacon. These boys came off the bench in many games tohelp the Cougars win.

The Cranford High wrestling team, thoughunder the usual fine coaching job of Mr. Farrell, had to struggle to a 6-6 season. However, theteam was continually plagued with injuries andweight problems, especially in the lighter weightclasses.

STUDENT COUNCIL

The Student Council, one of the most vital organiza-

tions in the school, provides an opportunity for the stu-

dent body to voice his opinions and to take action on

various issues concerning the school. A homeroom rep-

resentative and an alternate are elected from each home-

room to serve on the council.

This year the Council, under the leadership of Michael

Delia Rosa and the sponsorship of Mr. Naylor, has been

a determined organization. Plans have been made with

the American Field Service to have a foreign exchange

Even the editors have to work sometimes.

GOLDEN CTheoretically, the history of each "Golden C" begins

in the junior year of its editors when they are appointedby the Executive Committee. Yet it actually starts longbefore that when we first enter Cranford High School. The yearbook is a 140 page coverage of four importantschool years with specific attention given to those eventsoccurring the last one.

To accurately compile such a permanent record, fivestaffs work together under the direction of five respectiveeditors. The material is composed by the Editorial Staff, typed by the Typing Staff, arranged by the Art Staff, andillustrated by the Photography Staff. The business Staffassumes the responsibility of advertising and selling thefinal product. The combined interests and working ef-forts of all "Golden C" members were primary necessitiesin the production of this yearbook, but could not haveworked efficiently without the guidance of Mr. Hein,Mr. Longenbach. and Miss Robinson, our sponsors.

Theoretically, the history of the 1965 "Golden C" endswith graduation; yet actually it will continue movingforward with the futures of the people pictured with-in . . .

SPOTLIGHT

The Spotlight is the oldest student activity in Cranfordhigh School. When first published, it served as a com-bined newspaper, yearbook, and creative writing maga-zine. Today it functions as a newspaper providing ameans of student expression. It had staffs for reporting, feature writing, art, photography, sports, typing, make-up, and proofreading. This year, besides presentingarticles on school activities, editorials, and sports news, the Spotlight edited a supplement containing studentwritings of interest. It is the aim of the Spotlight to pro-vide valuable experience in organizing, managing, andediting a newspaper of current student opinion.

This means that thestage crew member in chargerepresents his school in meetingand cooperating with stage par-ticipants. Hence, a great re-sponsibility rests on each mem-ber of the crew.

VISUAL AIDSCLUB

The Visual Aids Club is primarily a service organization. Itis one of the few clubs that doesn't have formal meetings. Be-cause of this, there is a great emphasis on the responsibility ofthe member. The club depends upon the coordination of thefaculty and the members rather than work within the club itself.Proper treatment and care of the equipment are stressed, as wellas promptness and courtesy.

PEP CLUB

m: M

The Pep Club, now in its third year, is one ofthe largest and most enthusiastic groups at CHS.With the support of a lively Pep Club Band andits many members, the club adds much to schoolspirit at CHS. Ever-faithful Pep Clubbers canbe found at almost any sporting event sellingprograms or sitting on the bleachers, but alwayscheering on the team. Wherever a blue andgold beanie is found, a spirited Pep Clubber isprobably directly beneath. The only ill-effectfrom membership in this club seems to be theinevitable case of laryngitis after every game.Nevertheless, the Pep Club has promoted an"esprit de corps" which has become an integralpart of the athletic program.
