Beore I started my placement, I saw– and still see – the Graduate TraineeScheme as the best in the world. Notmany people get the opportunity to beinvolved in the London 2012 Games. Beore joining London 2012 Iobtained a BSc (Hons) degree inestate management rom theUniversity o Greenwich. In addition,I completed a postgraduate diplomain development and planning rom

University College London.

I’m currently based within theProperty team at the OlympicDelivery Authority as a GraduateProperty Development Trainee,assisting the Development Managerswith various key projects mainlyrelating to the Olympic Villagedelivery and design.

I attend at least two weekly meetingsthat take over hal the day i not allday. I spend another day working onvarious reports or my DevelopmentManager, and other days workingwith managers within the team oncurrent projects such as theInternational Broadcast Centre/MainPress Centre and planning aspects othe Olympic Village. This way I get ataste o everything, and it keeps myvwork interesting.

My avourite aspect o the role isliaising with the operations andproject managers working on theOlympic Village. This aspect o therole providesv me with urther insightand rst-hand experience at thehighest level, which can only be apositive or my uture career.

We are oering 11-month workplacements, across a range oODA teams.

To ensure you get the most rom theexperience, we set out clear goalsat the start, and have an ongoingprogramme o training, coaching anddevelopment to support you. We also

give you a buddy or mentor to help you out, show you around andanswer questions.

You would get eedback and supportthroughout your time with us. And wealso request eedback rom you atthe end o the placement, so that wecan make our programme evenbetter.

 About the ODA The London 2012 Games will bedelivered by two organisations: – The Olympic Delivery Authority

(ODA) is the public bodyresponsible or developing andbuilding the new venues andinrastructure or the Games and

their use ater 2012.– The London 2012 Organising

Committee or the OlympicGames and Paralympic Games Ltd(LOCOG) is responsible or preparingor and staging the Games.

Placements are available topostgraduates and graduates whohave graduated within the last 12months, as well as undergraduates.

To qualiy or the placement you mustbe able to demonstrate that you havethe relevant skills or the trainingposition that you are applying or,

and either be:– undertaking a our-year sandwichdegree course and be in yoursecond year o the course at thetime o application; or – undertaking a three-year degreecourse and in the nal year at thetime o application. You must bepredicted at least a 2:2 grade in your degree.

Reerences and security clearancewill be required and will be takenup once applicants have been senta conditional oer or a trainingposition. On receipt o acceptablereerences and security clearancesuccessul applicants will be sent anunconditional oer with a start date.

 What induction will I receive?All successul candidates will receivean initial induction into the ODA atOne Churchill Place, London. This willprovide a oundation and introductionor your placement with us.

You will then receive a specicinduction rom your line managerinto your specic trainee workplacement at your actual place owork (which or some could be at ourBurord Road oce). This will varyaccording to the business area androle. However, during your induction your line manager will agree yourplacement training and developmentplan, including suitable education,work shadowing and sel-paced

learning activities. They will also talkto you about any reasonableadjustments that you may require inorder to accommodate any specialneeds that you indicated on yourapplication.

 What will my employment status be?You will be deemed a paid

trainee with the ODA and receiveremunerations as advertised, alongwith the appropriate training,coaching and experience that eachplacement oers. However, youwill not accrue any employment orpension rights. Any trainee wishingto apply or any vacancies that ariseduring their time with the ODA mustapply or these through the ODArecruitment process, which will beopen to competition.

How many days holiday will Ireceive?You will receive 25 days a year(pro rata) – the same as any ODAemployee.

MentoringOn arrival at the ODA you willbe allocated a mentor – a seniormanager rom whom you can seekguidance and advice, and who mightalso be involved in your inormalreview processes. They will analyse your progress, listen to your concernsand challenges, and counsel you

on how you might tackle these –enabling you to benet rom theirexperience and wisdom.

They will have an honest approach togiving you eedback and challenge your thinking and decisions. You willmeet with your mentor at least oncea month, but can arrange to havemore meetings i you both eel youneed it.

BuddyingAs part o our commitment topersonal development at the ODA,a ‘buddy’ scheme or graduatetrainees has been put in place. Eachtrainee will be assigned a buddywho will provide ongoing practicalsupport throughout your time at theODA and to make sure the buddyand graduate trainee gain maximumvalue rom the experience.

 What about attendance?The ODA prides itsel on being ahigh-perormance organisation thatwill meet all o its delivery targets.

There is no induction period but youwill be expected to demonstratean acceptable perormance level(this includes regular attendanceand timekeeping). It recognises thatto achieve this it requires all o itspeople to do their bit, including thoseon its work placement schemes. Youwill thereore be required to attend

work during the agreed hours; ailureto do so may result in your trainingopportunity being withdrawn andoered (where appropriate) toanother candidate. Sickness absencewill be addressed in accordancewith the ODA’s sickness policy.

Regular reviewsYour contribution and perormancewill be an integral part o yourwhole team achieving its targets; we

do not have the luxury o allowingperormance standards to all. Yourline manager will thereore review your progress on a regular basis tocheck that you are on track, and that you are receiving the appropriatesupport, training and coaching that you need to excel. Should yourperormance be o an unacceptablelevel you will be given urther advice,coaching or training (as appropriate).I your perormance still does notimprove you will be asked to leaveand your training position will beoered to another candidate.

 What is your role at the ODA?I work as part o the ExternalRelations team. All o the venueson the Olympic Park need to gothrough the planning applicationprocess. As part o this processall community, political, specialist

and technical stakeholders needto be consulted on the designs.Part o my job is to make sure thiswide range o people have beencommunicated to and consultedwith and have the chance toexpress their opinions.

 What is your background?Ater nishing my degree incommunications I worked or aspecialist events company or sixmonths as an events organiser.

Describe a typical day?Every day is dierent and that’swhat makes my job so exciting!

 What is your favourite aspect ofthe role?I love the variety o the role andgetting to meet so many dierentpeople. I enjoy going out into thecommunity and inorming themo the project and the amazingopportunities that there are.

I also get to be involved withlots o dierent areas o theorganisation and nd out what’sgoing on.

 What do we do?There is huge public and mediainterest in the London 2012 Games.The role o the team is to keep thepublic up to date with the project,build relationships with localcommunities, Government and otherstakeholders, and to promote theachievement o our milestones. The

team comprises Marketing, ExternalRelations and Media Relations.

How do we contribute to the delivery of the London 2012 Games?External Relations manages relationswith the vast amount o people who,through personal and/or proessionalreasons, have a desire to be involvedin the ODA’s work. These variedgroups all have a desire to know howthe Games are impacting on their

work and lives, and how they, or thegroups they represent, can benetrom the Games. The Media teamexplains the challenge and scale othe project to the media to obtain aspositive coverage as possible. TheMarketing team works with otherteams across the organisation toproduce printed and online materialsthat communicate the progress oLondon 2012 and involve dierentaudiences in the project. Theseinclude a newsletter or peopleliving around the Olympic Park, thewebsite and progress reports to oursta and site workers.

 What do we do?Procurement is the way ODA ‘buys’all the goods (pens, paper), services(consultants, advisers) and works(construction, mechanical andengineering contractors) it needs todeliver its programme.

How do we contribute to the

delivery of the Games?Delivering a multi-venue Park o thisscale within a xed timetable is atask unprecedented in the historyo UK construction. For the ODAto deliver world-class venues andinrastructure, and a permanentpositive legacy or east London,the Procurement team needs toprocure and manage the delivery oa signicant amount o goods andservices within the given budget, and

keep the delivery programme rmlyon track. Fundamental values thatguide our procurement include ourcommitments to sustainability, healthand saety, legacy and achievingquality and value or money.

 What is your role at the ODA?On a day-to-day basis I handlekey data or weekly reportsand spend analysis. I use onlineprocurement tools to raise orders,along with helping managementoptimise the prole o the

Procurement department. I alsomanage smaller procurementprojects and play a key role inkeeping the team moving.

 What is your background?I’m a business studies universitystudent; currently on my workplacement year.

Describe a typical day?There is no ‘typical’ day. It is

always a new task, always a newchallenge – that is what makesthe job interesting and keeps memotivated.

 What is your favourite aspect ofthe role?The interaction with people, notonly with the Procurement teambut the wider ODA business on adaily basis.

 What inspired you to join theGraduate Trainee Scheme?The prestige o the Games and tohave something I can always lookback at and say ‘I was a part othat’.

 Job purposeTo provide support in project managing, evaluating and reporting the procurement activities o the ODA.

 What do we do?The ODA is the statutory planningauthority or the Olympic Park, itsvenues and inrastructure. The teamalso manages applications outside othe Olympic Park (eg Weymouth andPortland, and Broxbourne). The teamis responsible or all matters relatingto applications or planning permission

and or providing technical supportto the project sponsors with thedevelopment o business casesrelated to inrastructure and venuesand with town planning issues.

How do we contribute to thedelivery of the Games?We have developed strong relationswith key partners and agencies,such as the London DevelopmentAuthority, Greater London Authority,

the ve Host Boroughs, BritishWaterways, Lee Valley Regional ParkAuthority, LOCOG and StratordCity, all o whom play a key part indelivering the overall programmeand legacy development. We workclosely with them to ensure smoothand eective achievement o theplanning permissions. We lead thepre-application consultation andcommunication with stakeholdersto ensure that the development othe Olympic Park and other venuesmeets the aspirations o the localcommunities.

We provide technical support toproject sponsors in the developmento business cases related toinrastructure and venues and withregards to town planning issuespost-application stage. We alsoplay a key part in ensuring that theODA’s corporate objectives andpriorities stated within the masterplan

(eg high standards o sustainability,inclusion and access, excellence indesign) are incorporated throughoutour planning projects.

 What has been achieved?We have met the deadline orall planning applications to date,and have built and are maintainingstrong stakeholder relations. Wehave undertaken consultations orall applications and implemented

what has been easible prior tosubmitting them or permission.We have received permission onall applications submitted to date.

 What is your background?I am a graduate rom SheeldUniversity and masters student o

Il Politecnico de Milano, where Istudied town planning and urbandesign. There my studies ocusedon environmental assessment,urban theory and politics.

Describe a typical day?My role has given me theopportunity to contribute to awide variety o projects, rom theparkland setting or the Games tothe extremely important but less

glamorous deep oul sewer. Myduties are to assist the PlanningManagers and include attendingmeetings, debrieng seniormembers o the team, drating andreviewing planning documents,and supporting planning agentsto deliver high-quality planningapplications within tight deadlines.

 What is your favourite aspect ofthe role?The variety o issues that are

presented to the team, andcollaborative approach to problemsolving, which involves designers;local planning authorities; engineers;and project stakeholders. Also, theopportunity to learn rom the wealtho experience rom my colleaguesin the team and the numerousindividuals who work to deliver anyo the London 2012 projects.

 What inspired you to join the

Graduate Trainee Scheme?The opportunity to be part oand contribute to the largestregeneration project in the UK.

Assistant Planner InternSeptember 2009 to July 2010 (11 months)£20,000 per annum, pro rata

 Job purposeTo give the placement student the opportunity to experience some aspects o work that a senior plannerwould undertake. The placement will involve assisting the Senior Planner team (and the wider team –when required) in the development o planning applications or key projects and later in assisting withproviding technical support to the project sponsor. Working under supervision the ‘trainee’ will participatein the development o planning proposals, consultations and provide consultees with advice on relevantissues. The trainee will be working in a high-prole environment, in a highly sought ater role and willneed to demonstrate their ability to learn quickly and maintain a high standard o work.

Key deliverables/outputs– To contribute to the provision o a high-quality client side planning service which delivers a

successul Games and legacy.– To assist in the management o the fow o planning applications through the independent ODA

Planning Decisions team (the planning permissions authority) and provide support to the seniorplanners.

– To assist in application submission, reserved matters etc.– To utilise IT-based planning applications, the processing system and its public interace.– To assist senior planners in key projects including: the analysis and preparation o major planning

applications, supporting them in negotiations, reserved matters and discharging conditions when

required.– To accompany senior planners to other ODA meetings and external public meetings representing

the ODA interests when required.– To ensure that work allocated to them is delivered to high quality and on schedule.– To undertake other duties as may be required by the team and as directed by the senior planners

and/or the Head o the Town Planning Promoters team.

Boundary. It is also responsibleor ensuring that the venues andinrastructure are delivered in time orthe London 2012 Games.

How do we contribute to thedelivery of the Games?The team registers and validates allapplications within the ODA PlanningBoundary within a time rame.

 What is your role at the ODA?I’m working as an AssistantPlanner with the PlanningDecisions team, helping SeniorPlanners with large venueapplications and managingmy own caseload o smaller

applications.

 What is your background?I completed a degree ingeography and a masters intown planning at the Universityo Manchester beore starting thegraduate training scheme. 

Describe a typical day?The huge scope o the London2012 project has ensured no day

has been the same. I’ve had theopportunity to work on issuessuch as transport, sustainability,urban regeneration, archaeology,food risk, landscaping and publicaccessibility.

 What is your favourite aspect ofthe role?Having the chance to work ingreat detail on the major venueson the Olympic Park has beena particular highlight. Not manyplanners can say their rst everplanning application was theLondon 2012 Velodrome!

 What inspired you to join theGraduate Trainee Scheme?Working on the London 2012Games is a antastic project tobe a part o. Not only is it thebiggest regeneration project in thecountry, it is the biggest sportingevent in the world, which is very

 Job purposeTo give the placement student the opportunity to experience some aspects o work that a senior plannerwould undertake. Emily Black, Assistant Design Advisor

 What is your role at the ODA?I’m the graduate trainee with theDesign team, which is responsibleor ensuring design qualityis achieved across the entireOlympic Park. I work most closelywith the Principal Design Advisors,

the Arts and Culture team and theInclusive Design team.

 What is your background?This is my rst job since leavingDurham University where I studiedgeography and archaeology.

Describe a typical day?It varies and it depends on whatneeds doing, but I usually spendpart o my day shadowing Design

Advisors to learn how large-scaleprojects are managed. I work withthe Arts team on artist projects,workshops and commissionsand I also have ownership andresponsibility o my own individualprojects.

 What is your favourite aspect ofthe role?Everything changes daily. It isast-paced, exciting and never dull.

 What inspired you to join theGraduate Trainee Scheme?The excitement surrounding theLondon bid and the Beijing 2008Games was inectious. I wanted tobe a part o it.

 What is your role at the ODA?I am a legal intern working withinthe ODA Legal team. I workon various projects such as theDorney Lake Rowing venue, theBroxbourne White Water CanoeCentre and the VeloPark.

 What is your background?I graduated in law rom the Universityo Greenwich in June 2008. I havebeen working at the ODA ever since.

Describe a typical day?I do everything rom research todrating and attending negotiationmeetings. I mainly work alongsideone o the lawyers and reportdirectly to the Head o Legal.

I liaise daily with the lawyers,project sponsors and variousdepartments as well as externallaw rms and clients.

 What is your favourite aspect ofthe role?I love the act that I learn so muchand am exposed to so manydierent types o contracts andareas o law. There is very much aculture o sharing knowledge. I am

given as much responsibility as Ican handle, and always given thesupport and supervision that I need.

 What inspired you to join theGraduate Trainee Scheme?I have always been interested inthe Games and it is an honourto play a part in delivering themto London. The Games are oneo the ew projects that lookbeyond race, religion, gender and

disability, and unite people romaround the world.

 Job purposeTo give the intern the opportunity to gain experience o working in a busy, dynamic, high-perormancedirectorate.  What is your role at the ODA?There are a wide range o skillswithin the team and I have hadmany opportunities to get involvedwith a wide range o workcovering programmes, risk, nance,and the environment.

 What is your background?I graduated in businessadministration beore joininga business to business eventscompany. Ater three years andmanaging two events, I decidedthis was an area I wanted to ocuson and joined Transport or London(TL) in 2007 where I have sincetaken proessional qualications,joined the Association or Project

Management and am studyingor a project management MSc. Isecured a six-month secondmentwith the ODA’s Transport team.

 What is your favourite aspect ofthe role?There are oten unexpectedchallenges that need to be dealtwith to ensure that projects cancontinue with minimum interruption.Liaising with colleagues and

stakeholders to secure agreementon the best way orward is veryrewarding.

 What inspired you to join theGraduate Trainee Scheme?The chance to work in a dynamicenvironment with very experiencedproessionals, where very visiblemajor projects have immovabledeadlines and budgets.

 What do we do?The Business Resilience & IntegratedLogistics (BRIL) team is based inthe ODA’s Transport directorate. Itprovides an oversight on all transportprojects being delivered or theLondon 2012 Games. It: – reports to the Directors o Transport

and Finance on the progress o our

projects and highlight risks; – updates and tracks commercial

and nancial data; – manages inormation knowledge;

and– monitors transportation saety and

the environments within which ourprojects are set.

How do we contribute to the delivery of the Games?Together with our partners we

are delivering new transportdevelopments in one o the mostpoorly connected areas o London.These improvements will provide thebedrock or a successul Games. It isimportant that the enlarged networkwill serve both the Games and itscommunities aterwards.
