Another strong entry of prime cattle forward today. Young bulls kicked the sale off
with Edward Parkinson topping the trade with a super black British Blue bull selling at
211ppk to loyal supporter Peter Pearson. Not far behind was Johnathon Townley
with a super Limousin x selling for 210ppk
Steers and heifers followed with Gill Gardner leading the way. Gill topped the trade
with a fantastic 554 kg heifer selling away to Lister Brown for 233ppk.
Cull cows would be slightly dearer on the week with another strong show of cows
and bulls for sale. Topping the trade was Dunsop Bridge’ Geoff Walter with a
cracking Blue x cow selling for 146ppk. Suckler bred culls would be anywhere
between 115-146ppk depending on the amount of finish.
Dairy culls were a sharp trade with Gisburn’s very own John Hartley topping the
trade at 136ppk. Many well fleshed cows sold away nicely above the 110ppk mark
with leaner parlour cows 80-95ppk.
More cows needed every week to meet buyer demand at Gisburn!

Big show of dairy cattle with a whole range of goods on offer. Some excellent
pedigree heifers from Mike Robinson, Lee Donkin, Andrew Jennings and Suzy
Lawson, all topping the £2;000 barrier with three over £2,300.
At the other end of the heifer market there was plenty of choice and they were less
money than the last few sales. A pair of powerful 3rd lactation cows from GW
Whitwell sold at £2,100 and £1,900 with Colin Price also coming in at £1,950.
In-calf heifers sold to £1,510 due October to the Angus. Heifer calves £300.
NEXT WEEK we expect 30-40 new calved with a nice entry from Simon Moon.
Don’t forget our bumper youngstock entry on Cogent day 19th September, lists and
photos to follow on the website, keep an eye on the web.

The deadweight beef price is definitely having an impact on calf prices. That being
said, we still had buyers for all types. 167 forward in total and no ‘stormer’ in today.
The better blue bulls just shy of £400 and heifers just shy of £300. 51 Angus calves
today on named sires, continue to ‘buck the trend.’ More black and Whites about
today, but too many bobbies.
NEXT WEEK we would expect 200 calves with stirks to follow. Please enter suckler
and dairy bred cattle prior to Tuesday Lunchtime 01200441351
Ann Faraday : Young Handlers
Owain Boast bid for his over wintering project in the calf section today.
Weighing in at 62kg Owain hopes to train and nurture the Beef
Shorthorn x bull in readiness for Gisburn’s Young Handler Over
Wintering Competition next March. Prizes include presentation and
haltered showing, best daily live weight gain, gross margin, best YFC
member and best newcomer. Classes are grouped by the person’s
age and animal gender. All entered animals are presented for sale at
the spring store cattle sale to a full audience in a real ring.
This is a great opportunity for young persons upto and inc 27 years old
to have a go and learn true stockmanship skills. To register your
interest and intent to buy, or to ask any questions please contact the
office on 01200 445376 / 441351.
Buying days every Thursday for calves, fortnightly Thursdays for young stirks & stores. Last
chance day is Thursday 28th November 2019.

Breeding Sheep & Store Lambs Auctioneer: Rachel Capstick Clerk: Anna Robinson
Ewes and shearlings started the morning. All breeds, ages and types were very good to sell to a packed audience and many more could have been sold. Of particular note were Texel x Shearlings from David and Joyce Moorhouse, Gisburn to £180, £170, £168 and £145. The Handley family, Slaidburn brought Lleyn x Texel Shearlings which were keenly bid to £154. Mule Shearlings all sold in excess of £120. A handful of rams sold nicely too. (Remember it’s Twlight Tups this Tuesday at 5pm – 400 to sell, so plenty of choice).
Today was our 1st Show and Sale of Mule and Continental Gimmer lambs. A massive thank you to the Mule vendors who support our sale, inspite of it being a week earlier than other centres. You were re-paid for your loyality with a super opening trade. The Mules were judged by Robert Johnson, Felliscliffe (See results and photos above). First prize lambs from Richard Mawson sold for the top price of the day at £136 and a pleasing overall average of £85 was considered a very good opener by all! The Continentals were judged by Rob Marshall (results and photos above). They sold
to a high of £96 from Chris Craven heading down to Derbyshire. The trade of the day was for 2 pens of Suffolk x Mules from Gordon Haynes, Mitton selling to £106. Blue Texel Gimmers from Lynne Tattersall sold to £225 twice. Store lambs were a mixed bunch. Topping at £81 for storming Texels. The majority of the first cross lambs sold in the mid to late £50s and it was great to have several batches through the ring in larger numbers. The sale concluded prior to 1.30pm #GETINGETONGETHOME! Next Saturday 14th ANYTHING GOES! We welcome entries of all classes of breeding sheep and store lambs. Please ring in entries by Tuesday lunchtime for the catalogue and to aid with penning. Remember too the following Saturday 21st is our main Hill and Horned day and also includes our 2nd Show of Mule Gimmer lambs – give us a try you will be welcome. Thanks.

Calf & Stirk Auctioneer Rachel Capstick. Auctioneer’s Clerk:
A much better calf trade than anticipated with several new faces round the ring.
Plenty of those better calves above £400 and too many to mention. Of particular
note, was Alan Bowker’s pair of Blue Bulls at £455 and his heifers at £415. A
storming Charolais bull at £450 and the same price for an Angus bull (the likes of
which you don’t see very often). Also, Blues at £448 from Duncan Tattersall, £425
from John Lund, £420 for a Simmental and a Blue. Younger Blue heifers sold well,
smarter types £290-£325.
The Angus calves could not match last week’s trade but there was plenty of interest
in the black & white bulls. There were none today of the type which were every
going to sell above £100 but, plenty of little calves in that £50 to £75 bracket.
CALF SALES EVERY THURSDAY at 10.30am
Stirks in the bottom ring provided a variety of suckler bred and dairy x Continentals
together with the usual selection of black and white bulls ans steers. We had plenty
of customers for all the goods on offer and it would be fair to say that inspite of the
current beef trade, the stirks of all breeds sold very well indeed. We could have sold
twice as many.
NEXT STIRK SALE in a fortnight on Thursday 26th September. Please pre-enter
for the penning by Tuesday 24th September. Thank you.

Store Lambs & Breeding Sheep Auctioneer: Jack Pickup Clerk: Eleanor O’Neill Thank you to Jack for standing in as Auctioneer, we hope Rachel feels better soon.
The weekly sale of breeding sheep saw something of every breed today with anything from pure Texels to Manx Longhorns out for sale.
Gimmer shearlings topped at £148 twice. First time for a super run of Charollais from AJ Baldwin and then for Texels from TA & S Harrison. Mule shearlings topped at £138 for a powerful packet of sheep from Will Wildman, while Mashams topped at £114 for some well grown shearlings from John Dobson.
In the ewes section it was D Hughes, Conwy that topped the trade selling his 3-shear Texels at £120. Broken mouthed ewes topped at £112 for some powerful sheep from TA & S Harrison
Rams followed and it was Marjorie Sowerbutts that topped the trade with a cracking 3-shear Texel tup selling for £390. Shearlings topped at £330, this time a Texel from C Jackson.
Store lambs finished the day off and a lot of long keep lambs forward to sell. Topping the trade was Adam Daniels, Cragg Vale with a nice pen of Texels selling for £60. More short term lambs could have been sold with many buyers looking for stronger lambs.

Another quality show of cattle forward this week. Topping the
young bulls was R Turner with a super homebred Limousin bull
selling for 204ppk. Many suckler bred bulls in the 180-185ppk
bracket. Dairy sired bulls sold away well topping at 148ppk for
Friesian x.
Steers and heifers sold just as well as the bulls, heifers topped
at 255ppk for a cracking little 520kg beast from regular
supporters K & A Wooof. Overall we had five super steers and heifers, perfect for
the Butchers’ shop, all over the 235ppk mark and with plenty more well fleshed cattle
the top side of 200ppk.
Not as many cull cows forward due to the good weather but a roaring trade right
through. Limousin cows topped at 144ppk for a well fleshed cow from SW Thornber
& Sons. Native sired cattle topped at 129ppk for Herefords from Parkinsons at Cold
Weather and dairy culls topped at 142ppk for young cows from the Bargh family.

Trade set off today at a storming pace and kept up throughout with eleven animals soaring over £2000.
Topping the trade was a striking heifer from G D Donkin. Having been tapped out as Champion in the Cogent and Jameson Feeds Show, this striking leggy black heifer giving 33kgs sold for £2380 and went to the days judge Mr K Hill, of Wrexham.
Taking the reserve Champion spot was pedigree heifer from Jennings Farmers, Ripon. This sweet spotty heifer with very tidy teat placement made to £2080 and was snapped up by JW & JH Collinson of Colne.
TH Wensley & Sons, won the non-registered heifer class with a very correct black heifer giving 30kg went on to make £2180, heading again to the judge. An eye catching heifer from regulars GC & E Asquith & Son, also made the same price this time heading to WE & O Blockley, Cheshire.
GT Booth, had two heifers under their Dowshawdale prefix with nine generations of VG or EX behind these went to £2160 to WTC Farms Ltd and for £2080 to BF Blezard Ltd. A & N Starkie had third prize in the un-registered class which after some keen bidding went to Clayton’s Partnership for £2150.
The ring was still alive when the entry of 56 youngstock started. Following on from
their successful reduction sale a few weeks ago Dowson Daries had batch of heifers which topped £1270 for a non registered in calf heifer due in October. F Talbot & Co had forward a run of great pedigree bulling heifers which made to £880.
NEXT WEEK is a regular Dairy Sale with an entry of 40+ expected. Please ring the
office on Monday to get talking to Eleanor on 01200441351 and let her know what’s
coming.

Nothing above £400 but plenty of the young sweet Blue bulls £340-£390 bracket.
Plainer and whiter types could be bought for £100 less at £240-£290.
The best Blue heifers could sneak over £300 with plenty of nice sorts just shy of
£300. Plainer and whiter types same statement as the bulls - £100 less.
The other Continental breeds topped at £365 for a stomping Charolais bull from Pete
Dakin. Nicely bred Limousin heifers were good to sell topping at £280 from Richard
Close.
Angus bulls would be better than last week topping at £310 for a ‘proper’ calf from
Jim Faud. Plenty of others £240-£280.
A run of stronger black & white bulls all sold in the £100-£160 bracket, medium types
£50-£70.

Breeding Sheep Auctioneer Rachel Capstick Clerk: Annis Schofield This morning was our Horned and Hill Draft Ewe Show and Sale. Kindly judged by Ken Dickinson, who chose JT Baines, Gisburn, 3 crop uncrossed Swaledale ewes as first prize ewes and winner of the Frank Wade Perpetual Trophy. They later went on to sell for £84. Second prize Swaledales came from DM & SV Throup, Malham, which sold for £72. 3rd prize was Alan Greenwood, Trawden whose 3 crop ewes also sold for £72. Generally Swaledales were good to sell, plenty of interest and 100% clearance both with and without teeth! The Lonks followed. Alan Greenwood claimed first and second and the Nathan Wade Trophy which went onto sell for £72 and £70. Westalls, Briercliffe 3 crop Lonks took 3rd and sold for £77. Many more Lonks could have been sold. Class 3 was for Swaledale Shearlings. Phillip Sowerby, Hawes took the red rosette, George Bachelor, Trawden the blue and Richard Grange, Beamsley yellow which went onto sell for £98, £78 and £75 respectively. Other Hill bred ewes were Cheviots from J Peel and Westalls at £70 and £88. Generally the Cheviot ewes were very good to sell. Cheviots dominated the other Hill Shearlings. 1st and 3rd prize rosette went to DM & RE Capstick and sold nicely at £138 and £120. Second prize was awarded to a pen of 10 Dalesbred Shearlings from JL & EM Hickson, Austwick which went onto sell for £80.

Breeding Sheep Auctioneer Rachel Capstick Clerk: Annis Schofield Up into the top yard for our 2nd Show and Sale of Gimmer Lambs. It was nice to be able to welcome some new vendors to Gisburn, just trying us with a few. I think you were rewarded with a more than comparable trade when comparing like for like in other more renown Mule Gimmer centres. Regular vendors Saddle End Farms, Chipping claimed the 1st prize and won yet again the TL Haynes Memorial Trophy and sold for the top price of the day at £135. Other lambs from the same home sold for £122, £102, £90. Richard Mawson, Addingham 2nd prize pen sold for £98, then £92. Nick Parker, Silsden Moor claimed 3rd at £94. Nicholas and Charlotte Brown, Claughton were awarded fourth prize and sold for £82 and ERL Hargreaves, Worston 5th place which sold for £73. James Caton, Stainforth pen of only 5 mules sold for £112. Plenty of bonny faced lambs sold in the late £70s to mid £80s, and there was only a handful of runners below £60. Jonathan Shorrock, Burnley and club leader of Pendle Forrest Young Farmers Club, donated a Black Cheviot Gimmer Lamb which sold in aid of Pendleside Hospice and made £125. Other YFC member were tackling the Yorkshire Dales 3 peaks today in aid of the same charity. Bet there are some blistered feet! In the continental Gimmer Class, Bernard and Margaret Slater, Chipping’s red rosette Texel x Mule Gimmers sold for £93. Will Shuttleworth, Rylstone’s Beltex in second sold for £80. NEXT SATURDAY 28th is a full Sale of Cattle Sheep and Pigs and includes our 2nd Show of Mule Ewes and Shearlings. Please ring office 01200 441351 prior to Tuesday lunchtime with entries. Thanks

Prime Cattle Auctioneer: Jack Pickup Clerks: Amanda Simpson & Avril Wallbank
A much bigger show of prime cattle forward this week with 53 young bulls and 59
steers and heifers stalled for sale. It was also the month end beef show with thanks
to Lister Brown for doing a superb job of the judging.
Young bulls topped at 200ppk for a stylish British Blue from H & F Eccles & Son,
Worsthorne. Many Continental sired bulls in the 180-190ppk bracket with more dairy
bred bulls 150-160ppk.
Steers and heifers met a ready
trade with another retail butcher
ringside. Topping the heifer trade
was the pre-sale show champion,
a 566kg British Blue x heifer from
the Capstick family at Swinden
Moor, previously shown around the local summer shows (black heifer) 566 kg
265ppk £1499.90
It was also the Capstick family that topped the steer trade, this time with a Blonde x
steer weighing in at 666kg which went on to sell for 234ppk to Lister Brown. Overall
seven steers and heifers sold away to above 230ppk with more commercial type
cattle 170-180ppk.
Cull cows met a fierce trade again with 93 cull cows penned for sale. Topping the
trade was Mark Nelson, Bull & Cave with a stylish British Blue x cow selling for
167ppk. Leaner suckler bred cows sold well with many cows 100-110ppk, dairy culls
sold to a high of 138ppk and leaner feeding cows 80-90ppk.

A ‘mixed bag’ in the Dairy Ring today, with a display of varying dairy goods in the
shippon.
The best run of the day came from Malcom Fell, Whittington. This mixture of
pedigree cows and heifers topped the trade at £2200 for a well uddered heifer giving
35ltrs, joining Harry Roper in Longridge. A pedigree 4th calver from the same home
giving 48ltrs caught the eye of Kelly Hill, and went off to Wrexham for £2100.
Next in line was regular Jeremy Taylor who had a pedigree heifer making to £2020,
going home with Michael Clarke. Another well put together heifer, giving 34kg, was
snapped Dave Matthias, going to Cheshire at £1880.
John Asquith showed a 4th calver with an udder that stretched high and wide. This
again went to Kelly Hill at a price of £1900.
NEXT WEEK is Dugdale Dairy Day with an entry of 50+ expected. Fred will be
back in town with his tan in tow, so give him or Eleanor a ring at the office to let us
know what’s coming- always helps to match the buyers to the cattle ;-) !

Calf trade proved difficult today as 270 turned up and provided perhaps too much
choice. That said, 77 Blue bulls sold to a high of £440 for a pair from Alan Bowker.
Plenty of nice Blues could be bought today either side of £350 and whiter, plainer
sorts could be bought for £100 less.
57 Blue heifers topped at £390 for a pair, again from Alan Bowker, but there was
loads of choice of smart young heifers in that £250-£300 bracket. Whiter and plainer
types could be bought for £100 less.
Other bred Continentals topped at £300 for a smart bull from Nick Parker. Plenty of
Simmentals could be bought either side of £250. Best heifer of the day was a
storming Charolais at £310, others either side of £200 generally.
24 Angus bulls ranged between £100-£325. Plenty of choice £200-£250. Angus
heifers were back today to average £134 for all types.
STIRKS SOLD TO A PACKED AUDIENCE and were better to sell than anticipated
but bulls were harder to place than steers and heifers, for which there was plenty of
interest. We had something for everyone, from young suckler bred goods to dairy x
Continentals to the usual selection of B&W bulls and steers.
If you haven’t tried our Thursday stirks sale we look
forward to seeing you in a fortnight’s time on 12th
October. Thank you

A proper mixed bag today. The majority of the ewes were at the top of their age but young sheep were good to sell, plenty of Continentals above £100 to a high of £144.
Top of the shearlings were a pen of super Cheviot x Texels from David and Susan Pinder at £170. Closely followed by Fiona Hogg and Daniel Thompson with homebred Texel x shearlings at £158 and Richard Seed at £155.
Mule shearlings topped at £140 from Michael Barker and from Richard Caton at £136 and £132.
There weren’t many gimmer lambs today but Mules topped at £73 from Jonathan Parker and a pen of beautiful Beltex at £100 from Richard Seed.
Store lambs would actually be dearer today for the size and quality on offer compared with the last couple of sales. The majority would longer term keep goods and we were short today of the nicer white face lamb to sell either side of £60. Remember, we have a sheep sale every Saturday throughout October and we welcome entries of all classes of breeding sheep and store lambs by 11am Tuesday please for catalogue and penning. Thank you.
