Peg Candy

This category is actually a specialty cat-

egory within Confection that offers larger

pack sizes, including peg bags, theater

boxes, stand-up bags and novelty.

Within these segments, both chocolate

and non-chocolate items are offered.

Confection as a whole is seeing nice

growth in dollar sales, while units are

flat or slightly declining. This decline in

units but growth in dollars has a direct

correlation to volume growth, indicating

that consumers are choosing larger pack

sizes. And which specialty category offers

larger pack sizes? PEG!

Within confection you will see the fol-

lowing performance by pack sizes, King

Size has 37% share and is up +5.2%

in dollars. Count goods hold a strong

second with regard to share at 32%, but

have seen a slight decline of -4.3% in

dollars. At 20% share, peg bags are third

and are up nicely at +9.2% in dollars,

while stand-up bags are the big win-

ners in growth at +36% in dollars, even

though their current share of the market is

only 2%. Novelty and theater box also total

approximately 2% share each, but while

novelty is up +10.7% in dollars, theater

box continues to suffer significant losses at

-11.2% in dollars.

sour candy. This leads us to the explo-

sive growth of fruit snacks. Although its

experiencing the highest growth of all the

sub-categories, up +14.7% in dollars and

+12.8% in units. Welch’s is the leading

fruit snacks brand and is also the top-

selling peg bag brand, carrying an average

growth of +12.4%! So you certainly don’t

want to neglect fruit snacks as you

plan your offering.

As we mentioned, peg bags have

20% of the category share and are

strong with the non-chocolate items.

We’ve talked about Welch’s success,

but some other brands contributing

significant growth are Haribo, Jolly

Rancher, Trolli, and Sour Patch.

Stand Up Bag

The stand-up bag category

continues to show growth of +36%

in the convenience channel. The

top brands tend to lean toward the

chocolate items with Reese’s Minis,

Kit Kat Minis, M&M Peanut, Twix Bites

and Snickers Bites making up the Top

5. Although chocolate stand-up bags

were the first to market, the new brand

rankings prove that consumers are

willing to buy innovative non-chocolate

items in the larger pack type, such as

Sour Patch Kids, Haribo Gold Bears,

and Starburst Gummies. This pack

type is on the move, showing growth

year-over-year and will continue to be

one to watch.

Theater Box

This category is ranked 8th

overall among confection pack types,

– Although chocolate stand-up bags were the first to market, the new brand rankings prove that consumers are willing to buy innovative non-chocolate items in the larger pack type...

with Just Born Inc and Hershey being

the largest contributors. As previously

mentioned, theater boxes continue to

show overall decline, however 4 of the

top 5 items are growing on a dollar/ACV

basis. So there is still an opportunity to

earn large profits if choosing the correct

items to merchandise in your Peg Set.

Novelty

Let’s not forget about the kids…..

Another small segment, Novelty, grew in

both units and dollars. A key driver to the

growth in this category is innovation. As

you can see from the graph this category

is predominantly non-chocolate, however

Candyrific chocolate items have had

tremendous growth, pushing them into

the Top 10 and don’t be surprised if the

Yowie brand finds itself a home on the

top 10 list in the very near future.

As you plan your merchandising strat-

egies for Peg, remember to block brands

and pack types vertically, which makes

it easier for the consumer to partake in

multiple pricing promotions. Also, if space

allotment is an issue, consider a tower

rack to feature theater box items. Finally,

give eye level placement to top brands

that will drive units and dollars. By follow-
