For Survival Scenarios
Presented by the Tampa Readiness and Survival Grouphttp://FloridaReadiness.org/
Considerations
It could be that “holing up” after a disaster may only be wise for a short time.
There may be easier places to defend You may be inviting siege You can keep your family out of gun range. “The best defense is often a good offense”
There is STRENGTH IN NUMBERS!
Strategies
Perimeter defense (consider defending and “covering” the perimeter guards)
Internal patrols (randomness is important!)
Importance of signage!
Defensive Tactics
Fortification (includes small measures such as foxholes and observation and listening posts).
Defense in Depth – delay the attacker rather than confront them head-on. (attrition)
Scorched Earth Booby Traps Counter Attack – (take the hit, and then punch
back) Hedgehog Defense – defensive version of
“Hammer and Anvil”
Offensive Tactics
Ambush Highland Charge – quickly overwhelm with a direct
frontal attack. Human Wave – multiple Highland Charges – not a
good idea. Base of Fire – provide cover while others advance Flying Wedge – ‘V’ – shaped attack formation.
Concentrates on a single point, and provides respite for initial attackers.
Hammer and Anvil – Hit from two directions Raiding
Other Effective Tactics
‘Parthenian Shot’ – shooting backwards while on-the-run.
Hit and Run – used very effectively by the Mongols.
Irregular warfare – (e.g. “Rough Riders” – non-standard military units).
Infiltration Shoot-and-scoot (aka “harassment”)
Stealth and Deception
Encryption Disinformation Stealth and Camouflage Perfidity (unacceptable under any
circumstances) “False flag” (generally acceptable)
Adapting Tactics to the a Disaster Scenario
Those requiring normal military protocol (uniforms, etc) do not apply (e.g. “false flag”)
Hedgehog may apply to defending one’s home (neighbors rush over to assist, forming hammer and anvil).
Ambush
Importance of Communications!
Tremendous advantage! Is their communications wireless? Can it be intercepted? Is it encrypted or otherwise obfuscated?
Other Considerations
Who has the high ground? How big are your/their forces? Does anyone have a “force multiplier”?
(e.g. automatic fire weapon, tank, explosives, etc).
Where are your/their vulnerabilities? How strong are your defenses? How long can you/they hold out? How strong is their motivation? How strong is *YOUR* motivation?
Strategies
Wait them out Direct frontal assault Assault from multiple directions (e.g.
“Crossfire”, “hammer and anvil”) Fast withdrawal Withdraw with covering fire Withdraw leaving boobytraps
Non-tactic tactics
Avoidance Retreat Surrender
