R I N G I N G M A S T E R ’ S R E P O R T

During the year 78 peals w ere rung for the Guild, these cam e from 39 tow ers throughout the county and 5 on handbells. Although 4 o f these w ere peals o f Doubles and one of Plain Bob M ajor it’ s most encouraging that this interesting technique o f our art has again been revived.

The tow er bell peals w ere rung in a variety o f methods on all num bers excepting Cinques. The first-ever has been rung at Gt. Thurlow . Our six bell bands, w hich include some young enthusiastic mem bers, have made good use o f the peals throughout the county.

That ‘go anywhere’ enthusiast, Bob Lester, is back on form and top peal scorer, while heading the list o f conductors are our busy Secretary and R. W. Pipe.

W orthy o f comment was the London Royal at Grundisburgh, although a m ixed band it was the first for the Guild.

Personal praise goes to Mr. Frank C. Price in ringing 9— 10 and conducting Bob Royal, also at Grundisburgh, to m y mind a superb perform ance. Likewise again w e must congratulate G. E. Sym onds on calling “ H olt’s Original.”

W ith the closing o f the year w e w elcom e back to the H elm ingham band James Bennett, jun., but alas, w ill be sorry to lose after 30 years as Rector, Rev. J. A. Burness. His cooperation at all times has been very m uch appreciated. All w ill join me in wishing him and Mrs. Burness m any years of retirem ent.

G EN ER A L S E C R E T A R Y ’S REPORTLooking back over the year there does not appear to be

any one item to brand it “ spectacular.” But is has been full o f life and promise. We show an increase in mem bership o f over 30, bringing our total H onorary and Ringing members to 493. This is most encouraging and we would wish our new m em bers a very warm w elcom e and trust they w ill find every success and happiness in their endeavours.

Meetings have again been held throughout the Diocese and I would draw your attention to the fact that the success o f these is in your hands. They are your meetings and it is what you put into them that counts.

There are signs of youth com ing along in m any parts of the Diocese and it is up to the m ore experienced ringers to help, instruct and encourage them in the art and so build a foundation w hich w ill enable our w ork to be carried on in sure hands in the years to come.

Perhaps the most significant thing in our minds at the mom ent is the re-organisation o f the Districts. I sincerely hope that they w ill prove successful and there again it is up to every one o f us to play our part.

Officers have been found ready and w illing to undertake the duties involved and I wish them every success and if all mem bers play their parts the seal of success w ill be guaranteed.

At this point I feel it only right that we should record our thanks to those Secretaries w ho have brought us to this stage. Som e are giving w ay to younger mem bers and some are carrying on in various capacities but I know that all o f you will wish me to say a very big thank you to them.

The Annual General M eeting was held at Ipswich and proved to be most successful. The Service was held at St. Margarets and we are deeply grateful to the V icar (Rev. A. H. M arks) and the organist (M r. E. H. Bugg) for leading our act o f worship.

The 1960 Annual General M eeting w ill be held at Bury St. Edmunds on Saturday, April 23rd, when the Service w ill be held in the Cathedral. The preacher on this occasion w ill be the V ery Rev. J. A. H. Waddington, Provost o f St. Edmunds- bury. Full details w ill be advertised in the ‘Ringing W orld ’ so make sure that you are in the know by sending your subscription now to Mr. J. E. Jeater, Greystones, Cusgarne, Nr. Truro, Cornwall (3 months 9s. 6d., 6 months 18s., 12 months f l 15s. Od.).

Page 10: FOR THE DIOCESE OF ST EDMUNDSBURY & IPSWICH 1959.pdf · No 33 THE SUFFOLK GUILD OF RINGERS FOR THE DIOCESE OF ST EDMUNDSBURY & IPSWICH ANNUAL REPORT 1959 RECORD OF PEALS RUNG also

W e record with regret the passing o f the Rev. Sowden, P ercy Fordham, Edward Battle, W illiam Smith and Frederick Youngm an. We extend to their relatvies our deepest sym pathy as w e also do to the relatives o f any others I m ay have omitted to mention through personal ignorance.

Tw o restorations have taken place during the year at M arlesford and Offton. The w ork was shared by both the leading Bellfounders and once m ore the Diocese is the richer by their skill. Grants were m ade from the Restoration fund in both these cases. Further w ork is anticipated during 1960 and w e hope that both Aldeburgh and Eye w ill be in first class order by the time the next report goes to print.

During the year w e succeeded in ringing 78 peals. A steady figure is, I believe, an apt description. The num ber o f stars, how ever, are a favourable indication for the future.

The accounts show a small excess of expenditure over incom e. W hilst this is not exactly alarming it is an indication that incom e does not increase with the same rapidity as running expenses have. But there is an overlap in that another £10 due for 1959 w ill appear in the 1960 accounts as this w as not in m y hands soon enough to be included. On the other hand the cost o f printing this report w ill be m ore than last year in spite o f m aking econom ies. It might, therefore, be considered prudent to take some positive action during the com ing year to correct this trend by 1961.

W ith these reflections on our activities I w ill close by ex pressing m y thanks to all for their support w hich I greatly appreciate and trust that by our united efforts 1960 w ill prove successful in every way.

JOHN W. BLYTHE, General Secretary and Treasurer.

TECHNICAL ADVISER’S REPORTDuring the past year the writer has continued to inspect

the contents of our church towers in the diocese. In the year he has submitted a further 46 reports making a total to date of 187. O f these 46 reports 15 covered rings o f bells, being:- M onewden, Kersey, Hacheston, Stutton, Hoxne, Bury Cathedral, W orlingham , Covehithe, M arket W eston, Bacton, Stanstead, Copdock, Blaxhall, Cretingham, and Charsfield. O f these only Stutton, Bury Cathedral, Covehithe, Copdock, B laxhall and Cretingham are ringable. Covehithe bells w ere rung in changes during the year for the first time since 1939.

Page 11: FOR THE DIOCESE OF ST EDMUNDSBURY & IPSWICH 1959.pdf · No 33 THE SUFFOLK GUILD OF RINGERS FOR THE DIOCESE OF ST EDMUNDSBURY & IPSWICH ANNUAL REPORT 1959 RECORD OF PEALS RUNG also

Faculties or Archdeacon ’s L icences have been granted during the year for rehanging the single bell at Barnby, and the three at North Cove, the latter are now to be hung dead. A small mid 14th century bell is to be installed in the spirelet, over the chancel arch at Lavenham.

The Diocesan Advisory Committee, o f which the writer is a member, has expressed disapproval of a scheme to install loudspeakers and a gram ophone in one of our church towers.

The bells of Eye and Rickinghall Inferior (3) are now away at the bell-foundries. Those o f Offton and M arlesford have been returned to their respective towers after overhaul and augmentation and were rededicated during the year. Also a new treble to m ake six was added to Great Thurlow.

During the year the writer has been visiting a number o f tow ers to obtain m ore inform ation about the bells to revise the Index and D irectory o f Tow ers which appeared in the 1958 Guild Report. As a result a number of corrections are noted elsewhere. His thanks are due to Mr. Ronald Steward for considerable assistance in the tow ers and to Mr. Leonard Last for organising tw o outings to rings which are seldom heard so that their state could be assessed.

There are now quite a num ber o f parochial authorities in no doubt about the unsatisfactory state o f their bells. It must be the duty o f every mem ber o f the Guild to do what they can to get the necessary w ork undertaken and to see that the bells w hich are in good order are reguarly rung for Sunday services.

R. W. M. CLOUSTON.

BURY ST. EDMUNDS DISTRICT REPORTFive meetings have been held at Bury St. Edmunds, Gt.

Barton, Rougham, Ixw orth and M ildenhall, w ith practices at Lakenheath and Bury St. Edmunds w ith only an average of 19.

O nly two peals have been rung during the year both at Bury St. Edmunds and rung ch iefly by visiting bands.

A t a joint meeting w ith M ildenhall the follow ing new Officers w ere elected: R inging Master, Mr. R. Rose; Dist. Sec., Mr. A. F. Ballam ; Ass. Dist. Sec., M r. J. Y. Parker; Chairman, The Rev. Paul Greaves, L .Th.

Sunday Service ringing in the D istrict is not very encouraging as likew ise are the practise nights; there seems to be only W est Stow and Rougham that hold w eekly practices with good attendances at both and plenty o f youngsters in training, . jf j i

M y best wishes to the w orking o f the new District in 1960 L. W RIGHT, D istrict Secretary.

MILDENHALL D IST R IC T REPORTThe year started w ell with the Annual M eeting at Exning

with Newmarket, and meetings at Brandon, w ith the last o f our district meetings at Elveden.

During the year evening meetings w ere held at Lakenheath, and M ildenhall. The com bined meeting with the Bury district was also held at M ildenhall, w here Mr. A . Ballam , o f West Stow, w as elected Secretary, Mr. R. Rose, o f Rougharn, as Ringing Master, and the Rev. Greaves, V icar o f Rougham, as the Chairman. Mr. J. Y. Parker was elected to Assistant Secretary.

Peals rung in the district include a ITand-Bell peal of Plain Bob M ajor at Newm arket, also a peal o f Bob Doubles at Freckenham, with tw o district m em bers ringing their first peal.

Deaths fell heavily on us this year. With the passing o f Canon Sow den at Freckenham, a Quarter peal w as rung half-m uffled at Exning by m em bers o f the district. A lso Mr. P ercy Fordham, for over fifty years a ringer, a Quarter peal was rung half- m uffled at M ildenhall, and a peal board dedicated by the V icar to him. M ay they both rest in peace.

I w ould like to wish the new Officers the best of luck in 1960.AN TH ON Y R. MANN, District Secretary.

SAXMliNDHAM DISTRICT REPORTOnly one m eeting was held in the D istrict during the year at

Benhall with Saxm undham in M ay. One arranged for Theberton had to be cancelled unfortunately. As I have been elected Secretary o f the North-East District for 1960 there are two requests I should like to make. W ill all m em bers please m ake every effort to attend the quarterly meetings even if a little longer journey is necessary and w ill you please pay your subscriptions to your T ow er Captain or Secretary early in the year so that they can be forw arded as soon as possible (See Constitution 4 c ).

The Restoration o f Aldeburgh bells is in progress. The order has been placed w ith Messrs. John T aylor & Co. and includes rehanging in a new fram e capable o f taking a further tw o bells and retuning. It is hoped that they w ill be reinstated by the middle o f 1960.

The death occured in N ovem ber o f Mr. Frederick Youngman, o f Leiston, at the age o f 70 years. He had been a faithful service ringer there for over 50 years. W e must also record the passing o f M r. W illiam Smith, of Aldeburgh, a form er District Secretary.

As a Ringing W orld representative I must repeat my footnote for 1958, only much m ore strongly. D on ’t forget to take the Ringing W orld in 1960 even though the price is now eightpence.

ALAN R. BRIDGES, D istrict Secretary.

SUDBURY DISTRICT REPORTI think w e can again look back on a successful year. Our

M eetings at Long M elford, Assington, Acton, and Stoke-By- Nayland w ere all w ell attended, and our num bers o f Ringing and H onorary M embers are up.

B y collections at our M eetings we have donated the record amount o f £5 7s. 3d. to the Guild Bell Restoration Fund.

We look forw ard to 1960 and to the com ing into operation o f the new District, and w e extend a hearty welcom e to all our new members. W e hope they w ill play a full part in our activities

ROSEM ARY J. SEABROOK, District Secretary.
