Gospel Conviction

inistry is never easy. It’s not easy in any generation and every genera-tion has its own challenges. But quite honestly, it’s hard to come up

with any previous generation that has faced what we know this generation is facing even now and is going to face in the future. We’re living in a time of an increasingly secular-ized society moving at a pace unprecedented in human history. And furthermore, we’ve moved from a situation in which there has been a growing hostility to the gospel to where that hostility is very public. In one sense, this generation is going to be doing ministry, missions, evangelism, church planting, and pastoring in the context of a culture that is increasingly adversarial and openly hostile.

In order to prepare this generation for that, we’ve got to get them ready not only to defend the faith but to be passionately and compassionately excited about sharing that gospel. We have to train them in new skills in terms of how to face a culture that isn’t going to love them for their message and isn’t going to applaud them for their faithful-ness. But we also need to prepare them so they can prepare the church because that’s

where, eventually, everything fundamentally matters. Our responsibility is to train up a generation of faithful ministers, missionar-ies, and church leaders so that the church will be faithful in this generation.

In the context of an increasingly secularized society, we know full well why Southern Seminary is needed. We serve the church, we serve the gospel, we serve the truth. Ultimately, however, all these things find their true meaning in the fact that we serve the glory of God. Southern Seminary exists for one reason: that the church of Christ will be more faithful; the Lord’s churches will be more mature, more effective, more passionate in the truth; that the Lord’s church will be ready when he comes; and ultimately in the beginning, in the middle, and in the end, it’s all about the glory of God.

“ Only God can make a minister. That fundamental fact frames our responsibility; for humility necessitates our understanding that Southern Seminary does not make ministers. Nevertheless, God makes ministers through the crucible of learning, study, prayer, and experience. Southern Seminary combines all of these elements in a compre-hensive program of theological education that combines unques-tioned academic excellence with practical application.

JASON MEYERGRADUATE, M.DIV. AND PH.D.,PASTOR FOR PREACHING

AND VISION AT BETHLEHEM BAPTIST CHURCH

(MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA)

Jason Meyer was drawn to Southern Seminary because of its commitment to “the importance of the local church and how they put that emphasis into practice through local church involvement.” Meyer embodies that same commitment in his ministry as pastor of Bethlehem Baptist Church in Minneapolis. In 2012, the membership of Bethlehem Baptist Church overwhelmingly voted to accept Jason Meyer as its pastor of preaching and vision, succeeding John Piper in that role.

PROFESSOR OF BIBLICAL THEOLOGY

Thomas R. Schreiner joined Southern’s fac-ulty in 1997 after serving at Bethel Theologi-cal Seminary for 11 years. Today, Schreiner serves as a professor and the associate dean of the School of Theology. He is the author of several books, including Romans in the Baker Exegetical Commentary Series on the New Testament; Faith Alone—The Doctrine of Justification; Interpreting the Pauline Epistles; and commentaries about Hebrews, 1 and 2 Peter, and Jude.

“ Southern Seminary in general and Dr. Tom Schreiner in particular took what the Lord had en-trusted to me and fanned it into flame with great care and skill. I am more thankful than I can put into words.

hen he left Southern Seminary in 2012 to become the pastor of First Baptist Church, Hamlin, Texas, John Powell tried to corral

his congregation like a cowboy into a pen of spiritual and theological maturity. But a period of despair fell upon Powell when he realized the loneliness of the pastoral calling and the reality that, in the breakneck pace of church ministry, “God didn’t call us cowboys; he called us shepherds.”

“Shepherds don’t push from behind, they lead from the front,” Powell said in a video interview with Southern Seminary. “I came just wanting to ride a horse fast and have that bandanna blow in the wind, but what I realized is I need to foster a tenderness and gentleness

and leadership in a way that cowboys don’t.”Powell, who is from Kansas City, Missouri,

said studying at Southern Seminary for a Master of Divinity reaffirmed the call to min-istry he first sensed at the age of 14. Although he spent most of his life as a “suburban kid,” Powell said his family’s deep roots in West Texas agrarian society attracted him to the pleasures of rural life when he made summer visits to his grandfather’s farm.

Powell has since become an advocate for pastors not only to serve rural com-munities but to dedicate their lives to these areas. While Powell recognizes the priority to reach the urban centers of the world, he insists shrinking rural communities also are the “ends of the earth” and need Great

Commission faithfulness from ministers.

“Rural church ministry involves being with people when they are at their places of worth,” Powell said, describing how he often spends time with church members at their farms, hunting trips, or businesses rather than the privacy of his church office. “Rural church ministry is a ministry of presence.”

After nearly two years in Hamlin, Powell said he contemplated leaving the ministry. Despite his ef-forts in evangelism and expository preaching, Pow-ell said he felt discouraged when his membership declined and no new converts joined the church. At that time, several close friends at Southern Semi-nary, including Provost Randy Stinson and former admissions director Ben Dockery, intervened and encouraged Powell. Stinson recommended Powell read Paul David Tripp’s Dangerous Calling, which Powell credits with exposing the pride that “infil-trated” his ministry at FBC Hamlin.

Contrary to some church growth strategies, Powell said his understanding of a success-ful ministry could not rely on instant results, increased membership, and an expanded budget. Part of the reason he now encourages young pas-tors to commit their lives to rural church ministry is because it may take “10 years to see people catching on” to spiritual truths and exhortations.

“My paradigm for success has had to become sanctified,” Powell said. “I had to realize success was not more people, it may mean less people. Success was not more money, it may mean less money. ... Success is faithfulness, even when it’s hard, even when you want to give up.”

“Shepherds don’t push from behind, they lead from the front.

“I came just wanting to ride a horse fast and have that ban-

danna blow in the wind, but what I

realized is I need to foster a tenderness and gentleness and leadership in a way

Preparing Scholars for the Classroom and PulpitSouthern Seminary has equipped men and

women for advanced scholarship, effec-

tive teaching, and missional service who

are now serving distinctively in the

church and academy.

“At Southern, God provided a combination of theological training, practical opportuni-ties, and caring mentoring that were instrumental in prepar-ing me for my current position. I’m incredibly thankful for my dissertation supervisor, Dr. Timothy Jones, who challenged me, encouraged me, and provid-ed opportunities to grow as a scholar and teacher. Southern introduced me to great think-ers through lectures, guest speakers, journals, and books. Discussions with students were also valuable. Most of all, I gained a deeper understand-ing of God and the relevance of theology for all issues.

As the president of The King's College in the finan-cial district of Manhattan, Greg Thornbury is shap-ing the landscape of Christian higher education as he mobilizes students to influence the sectors of finance, politics, and the arts. During his time serving under SBTS President R. Albert Mohler Jr., Thornbury says he learned to read gregariously in order to engage the “wisdom of the Babylonians” — alluding to Daniel 1:4. He hopes to pass that contagious love for learning to his students so "they will rise in position, stature, and leadership.”

THEOLOGY (2014)

J.T. English joined the senior pastoral staff of The Village Church in 2014 as pastor of the Village Church Institute to strengthen the discipleship efforts of the sprawling, multi-campus megachurch in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. “J.T. possessed the four things we thought would be neces-sary to lead the Institute,” said Matt Chandler, the lead pastor of The Village Church. “He is theologi-cally serious; he believes passionately in theological training in the local church; he has an intuitive ability to take men and women who are in three feet of theologi-cal water and gently move them toward deeper water; and finally, and maybe most important to me, was his understanding and belief that theology should have an affectual effect on peo-ple. Theology that doesn’t integrate head and heart is dangerous and ultimately damaging to the church.”

Sean McDowell is a renowned apologist who speaks at churches and conferences around the world. The son of evangelist Josh McDowell, Sean McDowell also finds time to teach a Bible class in a Christian high school. “I already knew that I wanted to go into academia before my studies at Southern. However, Southern provided the perfect distance program in my area of interest — apologetics. One of the main reasons I chose SBTS is because it has an excellent reputation in the wider Christian community.”

Russell Moore wrote his Ph.D. dissertation at Southern Seminary on the relationship between the Kingdom of God and the social witness of the church. “In some ways, I think my life right now is a second draft of my dissertation,” he said. “Seeking first of the King-dom of God doesn’t mean with-drawal and isolation. It means seeking first the Kingdom of God and his righteousness and his justice. Those two things are held together.” Moore said his time at Southern Seminary as a student, faculty member, and senior administrator is “signifi-cant and important to me,” espe-cially his early Baptist studies under historian Tom Nettles. “I wouldn’t be able to do this job if it hadn’t been for that.”

MATT BOSWELL GRADUATE, M.A., 2013; PH.D. STUDENT; PASTOR

OF MINISTRIES AND WORSHIP PASTOR AT PROVIDENCE

CHURCH IN FRISCO, TEXAS

Matt Boswell chose to study at Southern Seminary because of the “doctrinal distinc-tives that are both professed and taught” in the classroom and around campus. Before he came to Louisville, Boswell was reading and learning from professors from afar, so he eagerly enrolled to study with them in person.

“Through the scope of my classes, and the breadth of reading, I was challenged to think through many areas of doctrine, ministry, and the Christian life. As a local church worship pastor, this training was helpful immediately and has continued to prove fruitful,” Boswell said.

“ In my time at Southern Seminary, Dr. Crider has helped shaped my theology of worship, my philosophy of pastoral ministry, and my methodology as a leader. I am deeply indebted to him and the faculty at Southern for the investment they have made in my life and ministry.

“ At Southern, we believe the right kind of training begins in the Word of God, with deep and rich theological training. And it continues for our students in training them to be not only excellent and diverse musicians but pastors who lead worship.

fter seven years of pastoring one of Louisville’s oldest churches, Jamaal Williams sensed the Lord telling him his appointed task there

was complete. It was time to move on. But to confirm that sense, he first needed to get away. Taking only his Bible and a few books on a week-long retreat to a retreat center that miraculously had a last-minute vacancy, Williams just happened to run into Sojourn Community Church founding pastor Daniel Montgomery, who was also desperately seeking solitude.

Instead of spending their respective, desired time alone, the two pastors who are both Southern Seminary alumni set out on

an hour-long walk that turned into four. After a week of discussion, Williams and Montgomery said they sensed the Lord call-ing them to partner together in ministry.

After Sojourn’s elders and executive team overwhelmingly approved the transition, Williams was installed as campus pastor of Sojourn Midtown Jan. 13, 2016, in a special service featuring a message from Russell Moore, president of the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission.

One of the fastest-growing churches in the United States, Sojourn’s largest con-gregation is located in Louisville’s Shelby Park, a majority black neighborhood. But prior to calling Williams, Sojourn had no

African-American pastors. While recognizing his preaching style, interactions with others, and personality may present challenges to some white members, Williams says he is focused on leading in such a way that Sojourn can flourish as a multi-ethnic display of God’s kingdom.

“My goal moving to Sojourn is to pastor well and to persevere with joy,” Williams said. “It’s to pastor in a way that allows people to fall deeply in love with Jesus, so much so that their lives are marked by humility and counting other people as more significant than themselves.”

Williams has already led a congregation as it learned to value others more significantly. During his pastorate at Forest Baptist Church, Wil-liams preached for several months through the doctrine of the Trinity, showing his people from God’s Word how they were to relate to God and to one another. His leadership helped the histori-cally black church embrace community groups, which blossomed from a deeper understanding of Christian unity.

As Sojourn adapts its worship style, preaching, and outreach to engage more diverse groups, Wil-liams says he hopes Midtown will also be “willing to put aside their preferences and their comfort for the sake of the gospel and for other people.”

“And then everything else will fall in place,” he added.

“my goal is to pastor in a way that allows people to fall deeply in love with Jesus, so much so that their lives are marked by humility and counting other people as more sig-nificant than themselves.

“The impact of SBTS and the Billy Graham School is daily seen in my life and ministry as I strive to serve Jesus overseas as a university lecturer in World Religions and Cultural Anthropol-ogy. The passion and the desire to serve God for his kingdom and for his glory were greatly increased by studying and learning under the faculty and family of SBTS.

“I draw constantly from truths learned in the classroom, refin-ing conversations enjoyed with professors, solid teaching received in a local church, and life-long relationships developed with classmates; I glean daily from the years I studied at SBTS. Nick Nye moved to Columbus in 2007 to plant Veritas Community Church after graduating with his M.Div. from the Billy Graham School of Missions, Evangelism and Ministry. He received support from Louisville’s Sojourn Community Church, where he served under lead pastor and Southern alumnus Daniel Montgomery, and the North American Mission Board’s Nehemiah Project. Nye said he chose the Short North district because he believed it was the “best place to influence the whole city,” which according to NAMB research has only one SBC church for every 16,686 people. More than 63 percent of Columbus residents are not affiliated with any religious group.

The addition of two influential Latino pastors to the faculty and significant discounts for online Hispanic students are key ele-ments of a new initiative at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary designed to serve more effectively those called to ministry in the Spanish-speak-ing world.

As part of the Hispanic Initiatives, Southern Seminary has appointed Miguel Núñez and Juan Sanchez to the faculty. Núñez, senior pastor of Iglesia Bautista Internacio-nal (IBI) in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, and founding president of Wisdom

& Integrity Ministries, will serve as associate professor of pastoral leadership and lead strategist for Latin America. Sanchez, senior pastor of High Pointe Baptist Church in Austin, Texas, will serve as as-sistant professor of Christian theology and lead strategist for North America.

In addition to the new faculty, the initiative also includes offer-ing all online Spanish master’s-level courses for $250 per class. The online program through the seminary’s Global Cam-pus offers the same high-level education as the on-campus courses and are available for any Hispanic student interested in training others for ministry, said Felipe Castro, director of Hispanic Initiatives. Through it all, God gave us grace immeasurable, providing us with what we needed financially, professors who met with us and prayed for us, campus resources that our children miss to this day, and a local church where we were able to minister and be ministered to.
