Rector’s Corner

This week’s letter is another E. We began Advent with B for Breath to begin entering into prayer, E for Envision your personal inner core/heart, and now, another E. This E stands for Enter in/Encounter the Lord. Do we believe that God speaks to us in our inner core? In our time of prayer—this is in addition to the rote prayers we pray such as the Rosary—are we able to talk? To let God know what is going on? To relate to him our thoughts, feelings and desires? Jesus is a person. And a primary way we get to know people is through our conversations with them: sharing the small things of the day, and unloading the difficult. The second part of Enter in/Encounter is listening. Friends like to be heard as well, and this applies to our Lord. Jesus communicates the Father’s heart of love to us in prayer; he indeed speaks to us. Once in your place of prayer, spend time sharing and listening.

“God wills that our desire should be exercised in prayer, that we may be able to receive what he is prepared to give.” (CCC 2737)

Comenzamos el adviento con la “R” de respirar, la “I” de Imaginar el espacio interior del corazón, y ahora la “E” de Entrar y tener un Encuentro con el Señor en la oración. ¿Creemos que Dios nos hable en nuestros corazones? Cuando rezamos, incluso cuando recemos oraciones de memoria como el rosario ¿podemos hablar verdaderamente con Dios? ¿Es que podemos contarle lo que nos está pasando en la vida? ¿Le contamos nuestros pensamientos, nuestros sentimientos, y nuestros deseos? Jesús es una persona y una manera principal de conocer a una persona es por medio de la conversación con él: compartiendo las cosas pequeñas del día igual que los momentos difíciles. La otra parte del encuentro es el escuchar. A los amigos les gustan ser escuchados, incluso a nuestro Señor. A través de la oración, Jesús nos comunica el amor del corazón del Padre. Él, de hecho, nos habla. Ya que estén en sus lugares de oración, pasen el tiempo compartiendo y escuchando.

We invite you to help continue the tradition of Advent and Christmas beauty in our church by donating in honor of a deceased loved one, or in honor of someone who is living. If you

would like to make a donation, use the Christmas envelopes located in the pews, or call the Parish Office at 512-476-6182.

As you have noticed in our weekly bulletin, we are consistently running on a cash flow deficit. As mentioned in early Oct., we passed a balanced budget for the current fiscal year, but we have no cash reserves. This means—until weekly giving picks up—running a deficit from one week to the next in cash flow. To date our weekly collection deficit is over $22,000. The diocese suggests having a minimum 3-6 months’ general expense in reserve, which, for us, would be minimally $325,000 upwards of $500,000. We can fix this, but your help is needed to sustain our parish.

Please prayerfully consider a year-end gift to the offertory for our general expenses to not only overcome our deficit but also to build up our reserves to $500,000. The gift is tax deductible if given before Dec. 31. You can also make a donation to offertory through our website’s electronic giving option, or by contacting the office at 512-476-6182, to learn how to do a stock donation. Thank you in advance for your generosity towards our Cathedral parish.

Sacrament of Holy Matrimony:

The Catholic Church believes that marriages entered into by non-Catholics in their particular church, or wherever they may take place, are valid. However, marriages in which one or both parties are Catholic and which are not witnessed by an authorized bishop, priest, or deacon, or which do not receive proper permission to take place in another forum, are considered invalid in the eyes of the Catholic Church. The Church very much wants to offer the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony for those who are ready and free to do so through what is called a convalidation. The clergy and staff of Saint Mary Cathedral would like to invite any couple that is interested in convalidation to contact the office for more info. at 512-476-6182 or email ysaldana@smcaustin.org.

This week was our students last week in school before the Christmas holiday. On Tuesday, our 7th grade class performed a reenactment of Our Lady Guadalupe apparition to Saint Juan Diego. On Friday, we prepared for Christmas as a school community with a program titled, Christmas Around the World. Each class displayed all they learned over the past two weeks about Christmas customs from other countries. We invite those of you who are considering a Catholic education for your children to the CSSM Open House Sunday, Jan, 21, at 11:00am, in the school library. Who Am I? A Young Lady’s Journey – All girls ages 13 and older are invited to participate in an 8-session, 2-event gathering in English to explore what it means to mature and grow into a spirit filled young lady. These sessions will be held bi-weekly January 10 to April 7 from 6:30 to 8:30pm, on the Cathedral campus. The fee is $30 per girl and will include, in addition to the 8-sessions, a Mother/Daughter Tea and Father/Daughter dance. Contact the church office for more information.

Additionally, if the suspected abuse is by clergy or an employee or volunteer of any diocesan parish, school or agency, a Notice of Concern should be submitted to the diocesan Ethics and Integrity in Ministry Office at (512) 949-2400. Prayer for Seminarians and Priests: Jesus, our great High Priest, I thank you for your gift of your priesthood to the Church. I pray for all priests and those in formation for the priesthood, especially______. Fill them with the joy of your Holy Spirit as they imitate you, the Good Shepherd, laying their lives down daily for those you have given them to serve. Let your love fill and satisfy their hearts as you teach them to give of themselves more deeply.
