T oday we continue to celebrate Christmas with the Feast of the Epiphany of the Lord. We may know them as kings, or wise men, or astrologers from the east; in any case this is part of our story of faith that reminds us that Jesus’ birth was
bigger then anything we could imagine. The first to hear of the birth of Jesus are the shepherds. Symbolically the poor, outcast or downtrodden hear the “Good News” first. But the Epiphany tells us that this birth is for everyone. Jesus came for those who are rich or poor, free or slave, and even kings. The distance traveled by the astrologers tells us that Jesus came for everyone in the world. It also reminds us that this “Prince of Peace”, still needs to be proclaimed by us each day. We are called to continue the work of the kings in proclaiming Jesus in our families, workplaces, schools, and churches. Today we invite you all to our annual Epiphany Concert. This year the concert will be special in that three choirs will be joining together for the afternoon. St. Agnes, St. Kieran and St. Irenaeus will all participate. The concert will be held at St. Agnes in the church and begins at 2:00 PM. This is the last hurrah of the Christmas season before we go back into Ordinary Time. I find it hard to put all the decorations away each year, but the concert lets me celebrate Christmas one more time.
Please join us and show your support of all of our music ministries in our parishes. The Religious education program begins once again this Tuesday, January 10th. Like the school, hopefully everyone enjoyed their break and is ready to start again. Classes begin at 6:30 PM. See you there. As we move into the New Year of 2017, I would like to give a report and invitation about the shawl ministry program. The shawl ministry met 8 times in 2016. They made 38 men’s scarves, and 43 women’s scarves for those who use the PADS Shelters. They also made 10 shawls that were delivered to the Illinois Veteran’s Home in Manteno. Forty-seven more baby blankets were also made for new babies who were baptized in the parish. Much of the Shawl ministry work goes on at home where the knitters do most of their work. When they get together it is for fellowship and coordination among the group. The group meets at St. Agnes, but women and men from both St. Agnes and St. Kieran are invited to join the group. The more the merrier. If you would like more information please call Kay in the St. Agnes office, and she will put you in touch with our knitters. Finally, I would like to say thank you on behalf of Fr. Tom, Fr. O’Mara and myself for all of your gifts and kindness over the holidays. As much as I try I am always afraid I miss some of you who have given us so much. So, thank you once again.
Notes from Fr. John

Parish News & Events
December 2016 Dear Friend of St. Kieran’s Church, The St. Kieran Women’s Club organization has been an important part of the Chicago Heights community for the past 54 years. The women’s club was originally established to serve the members of St. Kieran Parish as well as surrounding communities. Our work provides financial and personal support to St. Kieran Parish, the St. Kieran religious education department, the St. Kieran Cares program and the works founded by Catholic Charities. In the community we have supported; P.A.D.S, the American Cancer society, and local food banks. Every year we struggle to decide what support we can fund because of our financial limitations. Yearly we receive over fifty requests for financial support and turn down 2/3’s of those requests. It is our goal to be able to fulfill an additional number of requests this year. Your support matters With your generosity and support, the St. Kieran Women’s club can continue to provide additional financial support for programs within our parish and throughout the community. This year, funds raised at the our Mardi Gras will be used to continue to support programs such as the ones mentioned above, as well as the many additional programs asking for our assistance. Enclosed you will find a sponsorship/silent auction donation form that outlines the details. 2017 Mardi Gras This year we will be holding a Mardi Gras event on February 25, 2017. This event will be open to the members of St. Kieran Parish and the surrounding communities, and is our organizations main fundraiser for the year. We are seeking sponsors for this event as well as items to be used in our raffle baskets. We hope you will consider supporting the Women’s Club this year and help us make a difference in the lives of many. On behalf of the St. Kieran Women’s Club and parish we would like to thank you for your support. Please know that your donation, at any level, is greatly appreciated and will be used to support programs in St. Kieran church and throughout the community. Please reply no later than January 9 2017 for appropriate acknowledgment of your support. If you have any questions, please contact a member of our Executive Board.
