Why I Prefer Autumn to Fall

................

................ ................

................

In your home • Bathroom: Install grab bars in the shower and by the

toilet; use shower mats with no-slip grip on the bottom.

• Bedroom: Install a night light; avoid tripping by using

sheets and blankets that do not reach the floor.

• Stairs: Install hand rails; don’t leave anything on steps.

• Kitchen: Store often-used foods and equipment on easy to reach shelves to avoid the temptation to climb up on a chair or step ladder.

If you are in Maryland, ask us about ourfree Otago ExerciseProgram which isrecognized by theCDC and has beenmeasured to reduce the rate of falls by 35 to 40%. (Coming to Delaware soon.)

As we head into the cooler months, I prefer to think of the season as “autumn,” because for a senior, a “fall” is never a good thing. One in four Americans aged 65 and older falls each year. In fact, every 19 minutes – the time it takes to shower and dress or to eat breakfast – a senior dies because of a fall.* What can you do to lessen the risk? Here are some home and health tips. Please, don’t be a statistic. Instead, have a terrific autumn!

Give Your Health a Shot in the Arm If you are tempted to skip

this article, please don’t. It’s not

just about the flu shot, which of

course is important. Between

the ages of 50 and 70, there’s a

protocol of immunizations that

are as – if not more – important

than the ones you got as a kid.

In some cases, childhood

vaccines have “run out” or lost

strength over the years. New

vaccines have made pneumonia,

shingles, hepatitis and other

diseases less likely for seniors.

But, you actually have to get

the shot to be protected.

In time for National

Immunization Month this

September, here is a list of

vaccines that you may need. In

most cases, they are low-cost or

free for people 65+, and most

are covered by insurance for

people ages 50-64. Check with

your doctor on your next visit.

Peninsula Home Care and Peninsula Home Care at Nanticoke are

proud to be the Preferred Home Health Care Provider for

Peninsula Regional Health System and Nanticoke Health Services.

Bringing Telehealth

Home

Being away from the doctor’s office doesn’t mean being out of touch. The same telehealth machines

that are available in our OWL Nests for OWL members are also available to seniors receiving home

health care for use in their own homes.

This remote monitoring system keeps patients and medical caregivers in routine touch. It includes

an FDA-certified blood pressure monitor, pulse ox tracker, COPD/Asthma SmartTrack monitor and a

digital scale. You take your measurements at home and the system uploads them to your doctor.

Ask your physician if you qualify to have a unit through

Peninsula Home Care or call one of our offices and we can check for you.
