From the Principal’s Desk

As the end of this term quickly approaches, it is nice to be able to reflect on

our positive achievements so far. I am so pleased we are returning to a more ‘normal’

existence at school. As I hear of further changes in the reduction of Covid-19 restrictions which

affect our school, I will let you know.

Our students have certainly benefitted from fewer interruptions this term and have really

engaged well in their learning. Our RISE reward is this Friday and it is great to see how many of

our students will engage with this. Next term will see more planned events back on the agenda,

and we look forward to these providing additional learning experiences for our students. I am

still awaiting confirmation about in-term swimming lessons, scheduled for Weeks 5 and 6 of

term.

Book Week Term 3

We will be holding our own Book Week during Week 4 of Term 3; Monday 10 August – Friday

14 August. The official Book Week has been rescheduled for Term 4, but as this is such a busy

time for us we have decided to go ahead with our own in-school events. Start planning your

favourite book character dress-up costume!!

NAIDOC Week

We also acknowledge and celebrate NAIDOC Week next week.

Again, the official NAIDOC Week has been rescheduled to Term

4. We will recognise NAIDOC Week at this time as well.

Semester 1 Reports

Semester 1 Reports will be sent home with your child next Wednesday. I encourage you to read

these with your child and if you have any queries to contact the classroom teacher. APS teachers have been especially

conscientious and hard-working in assigning grades this semester, even though they were not required to do so

because of the interruption to schooling through the Covid-19 pandemic. I sincerely thank our teachers for their

dedication to our students in this regard. What a great team!

Enjoy Your Break

I hope this holiday break provides everyone with the opportunity to re-

connect, re-set and revitalise. Knowing there is less uncertainty about the

next term and less worry about our loved ones’ health will certainly be a

bonus for us all. Have a safe and happy break.

Absence From School Is your child going to be away from school? You must report your child’s absence and can do so in multiple ways; - Text the school on 0438 978 463 - Call the front office on 9842 7400 - Send a note to the teacher when your child returns to school If we don’t receive a reason for your child’s absence, we send a text on the day of the absence. If we do not receive a reply to our text, we then follow up with an Absentee Letter that will be sent home with your child. These are sent fortnightly. If you receive an Absentee Letter, please complete it and return it as soon as possible.

Mr Reece Smith, Deputy Principal

Students In Year 7 In 2021 Our Year 6 students have now had visits from both Albany Senior High School (ASHS) and North Albany Senior High School (NASHS). All students were given information packs and application forms. If you

want to find out more about either school, please go to their websites or consider attending one of their parent information evenings.

Application forms for both ASHS and NASHS are due by 24 July 2020 (the first Friday of Term 3). ASHS - submit applications directly to the ASHS school office NASHS - submit applications to the APS front office or directly to the NASHS school office

P & C News By now you will have received a note and order form for our Special Canteen Day on 3 July! Students have the option of ordering a selection of drinks, with sushi or a bbq sausuage in a bun – Gluten Free options are also available.

Things you need to know:

Orders can be made directly to the P&C volunteers at the Canteen between 8.30 – 9.00 from Thursday 25/6 – Wednesday 1/7 (bring your order form and cash payment) OR

Orders can be made via Quickcliq from Thursday 25/6 – Wednesday 1/7

All items must be pre-ordered except the Hot Chocolate - that can be purchased at recess time only for $2.00

If you have any questions please contact the P&C via email [email protected]

Remember this is a ‘pop-up’ event only, with investigation still ongoing for a permanent lunch delivery solution. As mentioned in the last newsletter our Lunch Services Working Group has tabled suggestions for an alternative to a school-based Canteen. Having lunch items delivered to our school by an external provider was the clear winner. We hope to have a service available in the future with an array of menu items for our students to enjoy – watch this space!

Mrs Jane Hare, P&C President

Ships Ahoy!

The students in Room 21 have been hard at work creating boats. The aim was to create a

boat that floated and travelled from one side of a paddling pool to the other. In order to achieve

the aim, they immersed themselves in the design process; brainstorming, researching, creating

and reflecting. They produced a large range of boats and were all very excited to set sail to test

if their boat design was a success. Our most valuable lesson was

that we all need a growth mindset and that mistakes are a VERY

important part of learning.

April M – I learned that boats need to be built so they can sail more than once. I enjoyed watching the other students and my boats sail (even though mine failed). It was fun! Nathan M – I liked how many different boats were made and the different way people used to make their boats move. It was interesting to see what materials worked and which materials didn’t work. Benjamin S – I learned that boats can use many different ways to move. I enjoyed designing and creating the boat. Grace F – I learned to never give up and if you fail once you can always try again. I enjoyed watching all the boats sail across the paddling pool. Oliver H – I think it was fun because we got to be creative and design a boat and most boats were successful. Will B – My boat went through the water by pouring water into a cup and flowing out a straw. The water pushed the boat forward. My boat was like a jet ski. I enjoyed going through the whole design process. Ben F – Boat building was fun and the when it was successful it was a great feeling. The process of research and the building were the best parts to me! Ella B – I liked boat building because everyone has a go and some didn’t make it so can make it again or make a different boat. Marlon C – I really liked it because you got to build a boat and float them. I also liked to see how the other boats worked. Chloe S – I learned that you can improve what you do and you should always believe in yourself. I enjoyed building the boat and watching it float across the baby pool. Jackson W – I learned that it isn’t easy to build a boat. First, you have to research a design. Second, you need to actually design it and make it better. Third, you need to run test and make sure it works until you have a good design. Jerry N – I learned that I can learn from my mistakes and I can change my boat.

Library Book Return

With Term 2 drawing to a close we ask that students return all overdue library books. We would like all books returned by Monday 29 June. Mrs Pumphrey will then be able to organise the full range of books for students to loan next term. Thank you for your assistance with this!

Up, Up And Away

Room 22 students have been constructing Hot Air Balloons for their art theme “Sculpture”. The process involves

putting paper mache over a balloon to form the shape, painting the dried paper mache and then adding a basket. The

students are only part way through their projects, however they already look so colourful it will be exciting to see the

finished products next term.
