Is your child enrolled in the right school? This question has been raised recently in the Brazilian media amidst conversations about school choice. With much debate over what makes a school good or right, it is important to consider which criteria serve to effectively evaluate this critical decision. Often overlooked when engaging in such a study is the comparison between good and right. That which makes a school good does not necessarily make it right for your particular child.

In published literature designed to help parents consider their child’s education, editors offer their own tips and factors to be weighed when choosing a school. These considerations may vary in small and/or big ways, depending on the assumed values of the readers. Most schools are founded on core values and an established mission. If the school’s pedagogical curriculum and approach to teaching and learning are aligned to the school’s mission and vision, then the school is good because it’s doing what it promises to.

Parents who are not in the educational field may not have the appropriate prior knowledge to determine the authenticity of these alignments. To help parents evaluate the quality of the school, it is recommended that accreditations, authorizations, and affiliations be verified.

However, these basic premises do not ensure that the school is, therefore, right for your child. A personal yardstick can help measure this comparison. The following three elements provide a point of reference:

1. VALUESThe school’s values should parallel those of your family. At EABH, the core values are excellence, perseverance, cultural diversity, responsible citizenship, and collaboration. The EABH Foundational Document can be examined to see if the school’s mission, vision, and belief statements are also shared and supported at home. 2. CURRICULUMThe school’s pedagogical program (written curriculum) should be aligned to the way the school approaches teaching and learning (taught curriculum) and should provide rigorous and authentic assessments for students to demonstrate their understanding (assessed curriculum). This alignment determines if the school is effective in its practice and is doing what it says it does. EABH is authorized to deliver the International Baccalaureate curriculum and is accredited by Brazil and the US standards through the Minas Gerais Secretary of Education and AdvancED, respectively.

3. ENVIRONMENTThe environment in which you want your child to study should be a critical factor. After all, a majority of a student’s lifetime is spent in school, so your child will be directly affected by the influence of peers and impact of teachers. Is the school’s culture supportive of your home values and your child’s way of learning?

Many of the points mentioned above are studied comprehensively and addressed in various stakeholder meetings offered at EABH. If you have not done so already, I encourage you to participate in our parent coffees, association meetings, and ongoing school improvement committees to learn in depth the quality of holistic education to which EABH is committed.

There is no doubt that EABH is a good school. We just want to make sure that you are confident in knowing that this school is the right one for your child.

In June 2014, kindergarten students celebrated the end of an important stage of their academic life and the beginning of a new challenge during a ceremony held at EABH.

With an excellent turn out, the Open House was a perfect opportunity for families to visit their children’s classrooms and meet teachers and other classmates. Lower School families participated in three different workshops based on literacy, math and play. A delicious american style barbecue lunch was served to over 430 EABH community members during the opening of the new covered court – now known as the Hangar.

EABH is constantly in touch with universities and colleges to make sure High School students are aware of all the opportunities they have once they graduate from our school. This semester we had many institutions visiting and this was a chance for the students to learn more about them and their admissions process.

We commemorated Brazilian Independence Day with a beautiful celebration organized by the Brazilian Program teachers and students. With students dressed in green and yellow, we enjoyed a presentation by the drama students and a very nice version of the song “Que país é este?” by the music students.

On August 9, dads were celebrated with special videos and music presentations prepared in honor of them by the students and teachers. Students and their dads also had fun decorating cupcakes together.

The PTA works very hard to organize great events for the EABH community. So far this year, we’ve enjoyed amazing treats from the monthly bake sale, an entertaining show to celebrate Children’s Day, and a Halloween celebration that was both spooky and sweet, with costumes and trick-or-treat bags.

On a beautiful Saturday morning, parents and teachers gathered for coffee and treats as they learned more about our Brazilian studies program. The Brazilian Program Director and the Program Coordinator both presented valuable information about how students are assessed and how the Brazilian Program works at EABH.

Dr. Russell Robinson from the University of Florida was at EABH on November 18 and 19 to observe and participate in our music program classes and provide professional development opportunities for our music teachers. Dr. Robinson’s visit was possible thanks to a special grant received from the Association of American Schools in South America and the US Department of State. There were only three recipients in Brazil (Rio, Brasilia and Belo Horizonte).

Apenas três escolas receberam a oferta no Brasil (Rio, Brasília e Belo Horizonte).

We are always developing new activities for our after school programs. This semester, students have enjoyed activities such as ballet, musical lessons, arts, capoeira, swimming, chess, junior varsity, MUN, and student council among many others.

Estamos sempre desenvolvendo novas atividades extracurriculares.

Drama classes for students in Grades 6-12 have been a great success. Our students have been learning about different techniques that have also been helping them outside of class.

DRAMA: LEARN AND LOSE YOURSELF

Grade 3 and PKII often visit each other and work together. This semester both classes learned about the human body and how it works. Grade 3 students were also paired up with PKII students every other week to read stories together. This is a motivational way to promote reading in both classes and serves to further develop English skills. Grades 11 and 2 also joined together for a math game called “Beat the Calculator”. It was a fun learning experience for second graders who learned new strategies from the older students.

We would like to give a shout out to former student, Briana Frink, who has entered the Honors College as a freshman at Oregon State University. Briana was an excellent and participative student at EABH, as well as an accomplished athlete. We are happy to see how much she has grown and look forward to seeing her excel as she continues her college career.

PKI students recently completed a unit of inquiry on family. They had the opportunity to introduce their family members to their peers and explain how families are unique and special. A field trip to one of their fellow classmate’s home was an excellent way for the kids to learn and experience the different ways each family works.

Throughout the years, EABH has been the beneficiary of many generous donations from families in our EABH community. We would like to thank the Géo family for their recent donation of our outdoor court cover, a place we have dubbed as the Hangar, as well as the covered passageway between the Hangar and the Gym.

Once a semester, EABH gathers our stakeholders to talk about the school and its development, as well as to communicate about our efforts for continuous improvement. This time is also used to elect new board members.
