Term 2 - Week 3 “Education for a Better Quality of Life” Page 1 DEPUTY PRINCIPAL’S REPORT FORBES HIGH SCHOOL HITS THE GROUND RUNNING IN TERM 2 Welcome back to Term 2 at Forbes High School and what a hectic start to the term it has been. As I finish writing this Deputy Principal Report, Year 7 and 9 are finishing off their NAPLAN tests which saw our students join hundreds of thousands of other students around Australia to complete these important set of tests. NAPLAN tests the skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life, such as reading, writing, spelling, grammar and numeracy. It is important to remember that NAPLAN is not about passing or failing, but about assessing the learning progress of your child at key stages of their academic development. The information the school gets back is used with other data to inform classroom practice and allows teachers to better meet the needs of all students. In the exams I saw, students were taking the process in their stride and reflected the school value of ‘Doing Your Best’. The organisation of NAPLAN is a massive task which over recent years has rested on the capable shoulders of Mr. Lickess, who again did a sterling job of running the process at Forbes High School. In terms of school culture and student engagement it has been a busy start to the term, with Forbes High School students participating in a wide variety of learning and extra- curricular activities. Week one was all about future focused careers with Year 12 students attending the Tertiary Awareness Day, Year 9, 10 and 11 students attending the Skills and Thrills Careers Showcase and the week finished off with the Forbes High School coffee cart run by our Stage 6 Hospitality students doing a roaring trade at the Forbes Netball Gala Day. Week two saw Year 12 Primary Industry students on valuable Industry Work Placement where students get to put theory into practice. We had a very successful Parent/Carer/Teacher information night that was well attended and visitors got to sample a wide range of activities provided at Forbes High School and sample some gastronomical delights from the TAS, English and Science Departments. Parents and teachers alike were also kept sharp and wide eyed with a steady supply of coffees and hot chocolates from the Forbes High School coffee cart. The Bedgerabong Pig Show saw a dedicated group of students represent the school expertly guided by Mr. Byrne and Mrs. Eagles. The agricultural theme continued at school with the SRC organising Forbes High School to be part of the Australia wide Adopt a Farmer casual day that aimed to raise $800000 towards direct support for Australian farmers doing it tough in the ongoing drought. The week finished off with Mr. T West and supporting staff taking a select group of Forbes High School students on the Boys to the Bush program which has its main goal of ‘ Assisting boys to become; better sons, better dads, better mates, better employees and better blokes…’ From the discussions I have had with staff and students alike it was an amazing opportunity for personal growth. Week three as discussed earlier saw Years 7 and 9 focus on NAPLAN, but also saw Year 12 Hospitality students head out on industry placement. Sporting opportunities also abounded with Opens Touch Football Gala Day and Lawn Bowls. As I finish up I would like to quickly plug the hard work that Ms. McConnell is doing in driving our SRC at Forbes High School and how you can show that support by buying a cake or a bacon and egg roll on Saturday at the Forbes High School polling place. THROUGH YOUR EYES

Forbes High School has been fortunate to have been included in “Through my eyes” which is an initiative from NALAG (National Association for Loss and Grief). NALAG donated 10 Nikon cameras and $1000 for the development of photographs for this program to run at our school. Selected students will be chosen to be part of this initiative. Their selected photographs will be displayed in an exhibition at Forbes High School. Mrs Price

MATHS FACULTY REPORT

It was great to meet so many parents at our Parent/Teacher Night last week. Please feel free to contact the Mathematics Faculty if you have any question about your child’s mathematics education.

Calculator Shortage Spike would like to ask all parents to check whether their child has a calculator as many students are coming to school without a calculator, which is an essential tool for their learning.

Answer to last week’s brain teaser: 141

TERTIARY AWARENESS DAY

On Wednesday the 1st of May Year 10, 11 and 12 students were invited to attend the Tertiary Awareness Day at Red Bend Catholic College. This day was very beneficial for students to find out more about Universities, Colleges, the Defence Force, TAFE and other post school learning opportunities. This year 43 different tertiary providers and organisations were set up explaining to students how to apply for university, scholarships, and pathways into university. Mrs Price Careers Advisor

ROTARY SAFE DRIVERS SIMULATOR

Forbes Rotary, in conjunction with the Lachlan Area Command Police provided our Year 10 students a simulation of driving under the influence, driving tired and demonstrated how distracting using a mobile phone while driving can be while driving a car. It was a great demonstration and both teachers and students enjoyed the extraordinary opportunity.
