Forced Marriage and Honour Based Abuse
Key Message to go alongside the Fixers Film
Calderdale young people have written, directed and produced a short film alongside
Fixers and supported by the Council’s Young People’s Service Voice and Influence
Team. The film is about experiences of forced marriage and honour based abuse
and is available here.
The film is a valuable resource for professionals working with children and young
people in any setting to raise awareness about the issue and where to get help. The
following message and resources should be used alongside the film.
A forced marriage is a crime. In an emergency call the Police on 999.
A forced marriage is where one or both people do not or cannot consent to the
marriage and some pressure or abuse is used.
Sometimes there will only be one chance to help a person facing forced
marriage.
Both females and males can be forced to marry
It happens here in the UK as well as abroad
Duress and forced marriage cannot be justified on religious or cultural grounds
Young people and their peers should know they are not alone and there are ways
of getting confidential help and advice. Call Karma Nirvana Confidential

emotional/practical support
