The Artists
Alessandra Ferri is considered one of the most gifted dramatic ballerinas of our time. Born in Milan, she began her training at the school of Teatro alla Scala and then attended the Royal Ballet School in London. In 1980, Ferri won the prestigious Prix de Lausanne and joined the Royal Ballet that same year. In 1983, she rose to prominence when Sir Kenneth MacMillan selected the 19-year-old dancer for leading roles in his ballets Romeo and Juliet, Manon, and Mayerling. Sir Kenneth went on to choreograph a number of roles for Ferri, making her, at 19 years old, principal dancer with the company. In 1985, Mikhail Baryshnikov invited Ms. Ferri to join American Ballet Theatre, where she danced as a principal until 2007. Ferri was named Prima Ballerina Assoluta at Teatro alla Scala where she danced from 1992 until 2007. Ms. Ferri has worked with many of the great choreographers of our time including Sir Frederick Ashton, Sir Kenneth MacMillan, Jerome Robbins, Anthony Tudor, Agnes De Mille, Roland Petit, Jiri Kylian, John Neumeier, Billy Forsythe and Twyla Tharp.
In 2006 Ms. Ferri was presented the Cavaliere della Repubblica Honoris by the President of the Italian Republic Carlo Azeglio Ciampi.
She has also received numerous prestigious international awards, including the Dance Magazine Award, the Benois de la Danse Prix and Sir Lawrence Olivier Award in 1983 and 2016.
She has been the Director of Dance Programming at the Spoleto Festival in Italy from 2008-2014.
After a six-year absence from the stage, Alessandra Ferri returned to performing at the Spoleto Festival in 2013 with a dance-play that she conceived and choreographed, The Piano Upstairs, written by John Weidman and featuring Boyd Gaines. The Signature Theater production of Chéri marked Ferri’s return to the American Stage.
In 2015, Wayne McGregor created the role of Virgina Wolfe in Wolfe Works for her at the Royal Ballet, and John Neumeier the role of Eleonora Duse, performed with the Hamburg Ballet.
Herman Cornejo is one of the most celebrated dancers of our present age. Born in Argentina, he studied at Instituto Superior de Arte del Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires. At age 14 he received a scholarship from the School of American Ballet, after which he was summoned by Julio Bocca to join the Ballet Argentino, alternating the major roles of the repertoire with him during the world tour of the company. At 16 he won the Gold Medal at the VIII International Moscow Competition, being the youngest dancer to get this award in the history of the competition until now. In 1998, at 17, he was invited to join ABT Studio Company. He was promoted to soloist in 2000 and to Principal Dancer in 2003. Since then, he has been one of the greatest stars of the company.
Along his career, he has received numerous awards and honors, including “Dancer of the Year” by The New York Times, Star of the 21st Century in 2005, 2014 Bessies Award
5
presented by the “NY Dance & Performance League” in New York, Positano Prize 2014 and 2018 and Benois de la Danse Prize 2014, which defined him as the best dancer of the year.
In 2015, he debuted as artistic director of the “Latin American Stars” Gala, as a part of “BalletNOW”, organized by the Performing Arts Center of Los Angeles County on the occasion of its 50th anniversary.
His repertoire consists of more than ninety roles of classical, modern and contemporary ballets. He also works regularly with today’s finest choreographers. Mauro Bigonzetti, Jorma Elo, Alexei Ratmansky, Twyla Tharp, Stanton Welch, Ana Maria Stekelman, Oscar Araiz, Margarita Fernández, Martha Clarke, Natalie Weir, Russell Maliphant, Mark Morris, Demis Volpi and Fang-Yi Sheu, among others, have created leading roles especially for him.
Bruce Levingston is one of the most acclaimed figures in contemporary classical music and has appeared in concert halls and music festivals throughout the world. Known for his “mastery of nuance and color” (The New York Times), many of today’s most important composers have written works for him and his Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center world premiere performances of their music have won notable accolades. The New Yorker has called him “a force for new music” and “a poetic pianist with a gift for inventive — and glamorous — programming.”
Levingston’s recordings have also garnered high critical praise. Heavy Sleep was named one of the Best Classical Recordings of the Year by The New York Times which called the album “exquisite.” The Arts Desk has called his playing “ravishing” and “sublime” and Gramophone has lauded his “ colorful, compelling pianism.” The American Record Guide wrote that “Levingston is a pianist’s pianist” and Classics Today praised his “transcendent virtuosity and huge arsenal of tone color.”
Levingston has collaborated with many prominent institutions on programs on art and music including Museum of Modern Art, New York; Whitney Museum of Art; Alliance Française/French Institute; The Aspen Institute and Aspen Music Festival and has worked with some of the most gifted artists of our time, including composer Philip Glass, painter Chuck Close, authors George Plimpton, and Michael Cunningham, poet Kevin Young, actor Ethan Hawke, dancers Alessandra Ferri and Herman Cornejo, violinist Colin Jacobsen and the Brooklyn Rider, and choreographers Jorma Elo and Russell Maliphant. He is founder and artistic director of the music foundation Premiere Commission, Inc, which has commissioned and premiered over fifty new works.
Levingston is the author and editor of Bright Fields: The Mastery of Marie Hull, the comprehensive biography and survey of the noted Mississippi artist. A longtime champion of human rights, Levingston has performed at the United Nations, gave a special premiere performance for the opening of the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum and performed in the world premiere of the oratorio, Repast, based on the life of the civil rights figure Booker Wright. In 2006, Levingston was awarded the Mississippi Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts and, in 2018, the Governor of Mississippi proclaimed April 9 Bruce Levingston Day in honor of Levingston’s lifelong support and development of the arts in his home state. Levingston is Holder of the Lester Glenn Fant Chair and the Chancellor’s Honors College Artist in Residence at the University of Mississippi.

About Gertrude Castellow Ford
With an ever-inquisitive mind, Gertrude Castellow Ford fully embraced the arts. As a patron, an observer and a
practitioner, Mrs. Ford engaged in a lifelong exploration of all things of beauty and inspiration. Exceedingly well-read in poetry and classic literature, Mrs. Ford was often at the center of spirited discussions about the merits of all manner of literary works. Al-ways at the very foundation of her spirit was a great and sincere love of the arts and letters.
In keeping with a generations-old family tradition of philanthropy, Mrs. Ford established the Ger-trude C. Ford Foundation in Jackson, Mississippi, with a very generous gift in 1991 to support the arts in Mississippi. In addition to the donation for the construction of the Ford Center, the Foundation supports the USA International Ballet Competition, the Mississippi Opera, Mississippi Museum of Art, University of Southern Mississippi Orchestra and many others.
Mrs. Ford died in September of 1996. She and her husband, Aaron Lane Ford, who was an Ackerman attorney and U.S. congressman representing what was Mississippi’s 4th District, are buried in Cuthbert, a small town in southwest Georgia.
