Fordham-Columbia-NYU International Conference on Sustainable Cities – May 1-2, 2018

Fordham will host an International Confer-

ence on Sustainable Cities at our Lincoln Cen-

ter Campus on May 1-2, 2018.

This conference, organized by Fordham Uni-

versity, Columbia University and New York

University, will explore solutions to the chal-

lenges of developing and maintaining sustain-

able cities in the United States and world-

wide. The panels and plenaries will take place

at Fordham University’s Lincoln Center cam-

pus. Participants from universities, research

institutions, government agencies, and the

private sectors within and outside of the Unit-

ed States are invited to submit abstracts.

Please make your abstract submission by Jan-

uary 19, 2018. We will inform participants of

acceptances by Friday, February 16, 2018.

For more information about the program and

how to submit an abstract, please view all the

related webpages here. Please continue to

monitor this website during the spring semester for the latest information regarding the program and the se-

lected presenters.

The conference organizing committee is chaired by Dr. George Hong, Chief Research Officer at Fordham, and co

-chaired by Dr. Rosemary Wakeman, Professor of History and Coordinator of the Fordham Urban Consortium.

Nestor Davidson, Professor of Law and coordinator of the Urban Consortium at Fordham, is the chair of the Ac-

ademic Review Committee. David Heston, Program Coordinator, is coordinating the communication team. More

than 25 people from Fordham, Columbia and NYU are working on these three committees devoted to this excep-

tional collaboration.

Columbia and NYU Research Fellow Forum

PAGE 3 FORDHAM RESEARCH VOLUME I I I SSUE 1

In an effort to showcase and recognize the research accomplishments by six Fordham-NYU and Fordham-

Columbia Research Fellows, Fordham’s Office of Research organized the Columbia and NYU Research Fel-

lows Forum on October 25, 2017 at Fordham’s Rose Hill campus.

Dr. Stephen Freedman, Provost of Fordham University, delivered his opening remarks congratulating all

fellows on their accomplishments with their research projects during the summer of 2017. Dr. Michael

Purdy, Executive Vice President for Research at Columbia University, expressed his great appreciation to

the four Fordham-Columbia Fellows who have worked with Columbia research partners to promote these

institutional research collaborations. Dr. Paul Horn, Senior Vice Provost for Research at New York Univer-

sity, delivered a written presentation in his absence in which he said, "I would like to congratulate all the

participants in this conference and particularly thank my NYU colleagues for the roles they have been play-

ing. Real impact on major urban challenges and sustainable development can only materialize with collec-

tive action. The joint research being reported today is a significant step in that direction."

Six Columbia and NYU fellows spoke of their research conducted during the summer of 2017. As planned,

they will submit five NSF, NIH and other joint grant proposals in 2018 as PI and Co-PI (total direct budget

will be over $1 million). They have published two articles, have submitted two papers, and will submit seven

papers for publication. Also, the Fellows have presented one paper and will present ten papers at the na-

tional and international conferences in 2018.

Based on the assessment of six fellows’ exceptional performance, Fordham Office of Research has decided to

continue its Columbia and NYU fellow program in the summer of 2018. Please check its RFP via these OR

webpages -- NYU Research Fellows or Columbia Research Fellows.

Faculty Research Abroad Program in Tokyo, Japan

To facilitate the development of research collabora-

tions between Fordham and overseas scholars,

Fordham will work with Sophia University in To-

kyo, Japan, to implement the inaugural program

scheduled for May 21 to May 28, 2018. The major

goals of the proposed inaugural program are to 1)

organize an international research forum on com-

parative urban sustainability at Sophia University;

2) conduct research field trips investigating urban

sustainability issues in Japan; and 3) develop joint

grant proposals to submit to both American and

Japanese foundations.

Meanwhile, the program has selected Dr. Asato

On April 4, 2018, five distinguished faculty members will be honored for their achievements in securing external-

ly funded research grants at the 2nd Annual Sponsored Research Day on the Rose Hill Campus. This event will

again be held in the O’Hare Special Collections Room on the 4th floor of Walsh Library.

This all-day event combines a means of furthering faculty education with honoring outstanding externally funded

research. The tentative agenda is as follows:

Research Compliance Awareness Fair

Training Workshop on Export Control

Outstanding Externally Funded Research Award Ceremony

Humanities Research Forum

As in last year’s event, five distinguished faculty members will be awarded in each of five categories: Sciences,

Social Sciences, Humanities, Interdisciplinary Research, and Junior Faculty Research.

To nominate a faculty member or to self-nominate, please monitor our webpages for further details. The deadline

for nomination and/or self-nomination is February 1, 2018.

This event is co-sponsored by the University Research Council and the Office of Research. Please mark your cal-

endars.

Strategic Research Consortium on Digital Scholarship

Fordham University has established the Strategic Research Consortium on Digital Scholarship. This effort is inspired by

the CUSP goal that the University should "Identify and invest in selected areas of current and future strength in research

and scholarship" (II.A.1). The University Research Council has recommended unanimously that Digital Scholarship be the

top priority as a pilot project for this academic year.

Broadly speaking, digital scholarship encompasses the use of new technologies to advance methods of inquiry and scholar-

ly communication, as well as research on digital technology and media. The focus of Fordham’s Digital Scholarship Con-

sortium in its pilot year will be the intersections of digital technology and media with central components of the universi-

ty’s mission — cultivating knowledge and wisdom and advancing social justice.

Dr. Micki McGee (Sociology and Anthropology/American Studies) and Dr. Gregory Donovan (Communications & Media

Studies/New Media and Digital Design) have

been appointed as the inaugural coordinators of

the Digital Scholarship Consortium.

The Fordham University Research Council is

currently developing a process to identify addi-

tional areas of research that can be promoted

through the creation of consortia. We look for-

ward to sharing these methods with you soon.

Scholarly Writing Workshop — Summer 2017

Evaluations were extremely positive

with almost everyone taking away

some useful suggestions from Profes-

sor Gray’s deep experience and well-

presented information.

Scholarly-writing trainer Dr. Tara

Gray came to Rose Hill on June 7,

2017 to address a gathering of Ford-

ham faculty and graduate students,

providing numerous suggestions

regarding scholarly writing.

The workshop was called,

“Publish & Flourish: Become

a Prolific Scholar.”

In addition to walking the

audience through the vari-

ous phases of scholarly writ-

ing and editing, Dr. Gray

asked participants to bring a

short example of his or her

scholarly writing to receive

suggestions from colleagues

within small break-out

groups.
