Arléa is a small publishing house which mainly publish lite-rature and classical texts since 1986. But also some essays and texts about architecture. Arléa have adopted a demanding editorial policy, their aim being to transmit French texts and major foreign texts, of yesterday and today, written by established authors as well as the young generation.

Une tache d’encre is the story of a childhood crack. When, after the death of his mother, the narrator found an inkstand, he recovers his past.

But the past is not a still image, it is a film whose protagonists constantly change place. So we follow them in the night trains, in Venice in winter, in the Pyrenees or the cinemas in Paris.

By retracing his steps, the narrator rediscovers the relationship so complex and so mysterious to his brother that is the secret motif and the red thread of this novel.

Une tache d’encre raconte une fêlure d’enfance. En retrouvant, après la mort de sa mère, un encrier, le narrateur retrouve son passé.

Mais le passé n’est pas une image immobile, c’est un film dont les protagonistes changent en permanence de place. Aussi les suivons-nous dans les trains de nuit, à Venise en hiver, dans les Pyrénées ou les cinémas parisiens.

En revenant sur ses pas, le narrateur redécouvre la relation si complexe et si mystérieuse à son frère qui est le motif secret et le fil rouge de ce roman.

At the age of 20, following a love disappointment, the narrator leaves for Taiwan without knowing too much about what to do with his life. He is seduced by the reception of a bonze in a Zen temple of the north of the island. T

He’s the only stranger to be welcomed there, while nothing prepared for it. He discovers, with the ingenuous and confident look of youth, the everyday life of Buddhist monks and nuns, punctuated by meditation and study of texts. He learns meditation, gradually espouses their existence woven of simple passions, in harmony with a nature that echoes the poetic imagination of China. He became friends with those who chose the monastic way and gave him scraps of their history and thus became Master of the drum and therefore Master of the time.

This beautiful balance is broken with a sudden grace.

À l’âge de 20 ans, suite à une déception amoureuse, le narrateur part pour Taiwan sans trop savoir que faire de sa vie. Il se laisse séduire par l’accueil d’un bonze dans un temple zen du nord de l’île.

Seul étranger à y être accueilli, alors que rien ne l’y préparait, il découvre, avec le regard ingénu et confiant de la jeunesse, le quotidien des moines et des nonnes bouddhistes, rythmé par la méditation et l’étude des textes. Il apprend la méditation, épouse peu à peu leur existence tissée de passions simples, en harmonie avec une nature qui fait écho à l’imaginaire poétique de la Chine. Il se lie d’amitié avec celles et ceux qui ont choisi la voie monastique et lui livrent des bribes de leur histoire et devient ainsi Maître du tambour et donc Maître du temps.

Ce bel équilibre est rompu avec une grâce soudaine.

It will have sufficed for a very official letter, signifying his leave of an apartment which the narrator had occupied for thirty years, so that all the places which have marked his life, suddenly appear in the blur. Without chronology, without apparent order, except the one of the heart, the author recapitulates his life by the places that were, sometimes the center, the refuge, and first the apartment in Bordeaux, located Duffour-Dubergier street, Which, incidentally, was also the one of the Mauriac family. «It is there,» writes François Mauriac in his book Commencement d’une vie, «that I was born into conscious life.» It will be understood that the presence of this illustrious predecessor will not be trivial. For the places keep in them the traces of those who have invested them, for a time, sometimes fleetingly, and then restore them, in the silence of a summer afternoon, at the time of the siesta, in a charter in pretty good condition, in Macau for example.

Among these houses of life there are those of childhood, then the others. Houses of family, chalet arcachonnais, apartments. And a common geography: a pocket handkerchief, drawn by a child’s hand on a Southwest’s map. Bordeaux, Caudéran, the Basque coast, Fronsac, Macau. There are the light shadows, the fright of a child, the laughter of a mother, the tender complicity of a grandmother, the first readings, the absent ones. Those who go away forever.

Il aura suffi d’une lettre très officielle lui signifiant son congé d’un appartement qu’il occupait depuis trente ans, pour que, tout à coup, se dessinent à l’estompe, tous les lieux qui ont jalonné la vie du narrateur. Sans chronologie, sans ordre apparent, si ce n’est celui du coeur, l’auteur récapitule sa vie par les endroits qui en furent, quelquefois le centre, le refuge, et d’abord l’appartement bordelais de la rue Duffour-Dubergier, lequel, soit dit en passant, fut aussi celui de la famille Mauriac. « C’est là, écrit François Mauriac dans Commencement d’une vie, que je suis né à la vie consciente ». On aura compris que la présence de cet illustre prédécesseur ne sera pas anodine. Car les lieux gardent en eux les traces de ceux qui les ont investis, un temps, fugacement parfois, puis les restituent, dans le silence d’un après-midi d’été, à l’heure de la sieste, dans une charteuse d’assez belle facture, à Macau par exemple.

Parmi ces maisons de la vie, il y a celles de l’enfance, puis les autres. Maisons de famille, chalet arcachonnais, appartements. Et une géographie commune : un mouchoir de poche, dessiné par une main d’enfant sur une carte du Sud-Ouest. Bordeaux, Caudéran, la côte Basque, Fronsac, Macau. Il y a les ombres légères, les effrois d’enfant, le rire d’une mère, la tendre complicité d’une grand-mère, les premières lectures, les absents. Ceux qui s’éloignent, pour toujours.
