The total state area of the Republic of Macedonia is 25,713

km2 and according to that, it is among the smallest countries in Europe.

But the natural characteristics in spite its small area shows lots of

heterogeneity.

Forest Governance policies

The main obstacles is one area several entities managed with the forests

- Forest – with forest PE Macedonian Forests or private forest owners

- Game – game association, NGO (sport and recreational), private companies, public organizations

- Minerals – private companies (tenders)

- Water – Water company

• - procedure for adoption of three new rulebooks ( for economic and protective forests, for protected areas and for private forests

Law on Forest

Article 28 of the Law on Forest (Official Gazette ofRM 64/2009) recognizes the following planningdocuments

• Forest management plan (State forests and privateforests of more than 100 ha must have a management plan)

• Forest management programme (seedling plantations,windbreak belts on an area of more than two acres, silvicultureand plantations on an area of more than two acres that are notpart of a forest management unit, as well as private forests thatcover an area of less than 100 ha shall be managed based on a

forest management programme)

• Annual forest management plans (the annual forestmanagement plan shall be prepared in accordance with the

special forest management plans)

Forest Management

Forest in Macedonia are divided in 187 Forest Management Units (FMU)

• PE Macedonian Forests managed 175 FMU

• NP Mavrovo managed 6 FMU• NP Galicica managed 2 FMU• NP Pelister managed 2 FMU• Public Enterprise for Managing and Protection

of the Multipurpose area “Jasen managed 2 FMU

Forest Management

In addition, there are also some programs for managing:

- Different forests with a special purpose, such as the

a) Park Forest Vodno,

b) the Smolarski Waterfalls,

c) the wind shelter belt in Sveti Nikole

- Several plans for church forests
