Forestation Project2010
Planting trees alongside Mano a Mano’s Choquechampi reservoir to decrease erosion
and preserve the reservoir
The trees arrive onsite, where they are counted and organized.
After being unloaded, the trees are grouped according to where they will be planted.
The tools for the job are set up – picks and buckets.
A 50-meter hose is connected for watering the trees.
Community members hike up the hill carrying the trees in bags on their back.
Planting begins.
Community members plant the trees in groups.
Newly planted trees; more than 5,000 trees total were planted!
Water for the trees is carried to the site by hand.
The entire community works on the project. Education is key to ensuring success; without someone (in this case Mano a Mano) helping to provide a plan for maintenance it’s unlikely the trees would survive (this is what happened in a nearby community that planted trees with no strategy for basic upkeep).
