MESSAGE FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL

Mr Peter Karamoshos

Say Bye Bye to Bullying The Student Representative Council (SRC) on the Senior Campus, along with the help of Mr Michael Rodas, our Director of Wellbeing, has recently agreed to launch a campaign at our school called ‘Bye Bye Bullying.’ The aim of the program is to obviously minimise (and ultimately eradicate) bullying at our College. Everyone has the right to feel safe and happy whilst at school and have the opportunity to learn in a safe, enjoyable environment. We would hope that every student is smiling as they enter the College in the morning, enjoys their time at school and then walks out smiling at the end of the day. We are committed to making sure that our school is a positive place for everyone and part of this is making sure that nobody is ever bullied. We are doing many things at the school to get this message across. We will be implementing a three step process to encourage students to ‘Spot it Out’ then ‘Speak Out’ in order to ‘Stamp it Out.’ So we are clear, bullying includes: Spreading rumours or gossip that are not true Excluding or isolating someone socially Intimidating a person Undermining or deliberately impeding a person's work Physical abuse or verbal abuse Damaging someone’s social reputation or social acceptance Playing jokes to embarrass or humiliate Cyber bullying Abusive or hurtful texts, emails, posts, images or videos. We look forward to everyone supporting this anti-bullying program to ensure that all students maximize their learning opportunities at the College, are supported and feel positive about themselves. ICAS Testing All students from Years 2 – 12 are invited to participate in the 2016 ICAS testing in English and Mathematics. These tests give students an opportunity to challenge themselves in independent, skills based tasks. These tests are voluntary and involve a cost of $8.80 per test. Test Dates English: Tuesday, 2 August Mathematics: Tuesday, 16 August

For more information, please visit the ICAS website: www.eaa.unsw.edu.au. An email regarding the ICAS tests has been emailed to all parents (Years 2—12). If you would like your child to take part in one or two of these tests, please complete the consent form and return with money, to the front office of the respective Campus by Monday, 27 June.

MESSAGE FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL Mr Peter Karamoshos

Year 7 Drama Productions—a Huge Success! On Friday, 17 June, our Year 7 Drama class performed two plays in front of the Year 4 students. We started practicing and rehearsing these two plays in Week 5 of Term 1. One play was about several crimes that occurred in the city of London and the other was about Ancient Egypt’s first Mummy. When the Year 4’s arrived they sat down and watched our play about Ancient Egypt. There were funny moments throughout this play, including when the narrator of the play said a joke, about who should be the King of Egypt and when Egypt’s first Mummy was created by being wrapped in toilet paper. When this play ended, our second play about the crimes in London began. There were funny moments in this production too, including when the shop keeper was telling the police about his stolen fruits and when the criminal, Mr Boston, was arrested for trying to steal a poor unsuspecting lady’s handbag. Working on these productions this semester and getting the opportunity to perform them to a live audience, which included the Year 4’s, Mrs Moro, Ms Jones and 2 parents, was a great thrill and joy for all involved. Through Mr Shepheard’s direction, we were able to bring some really interesting and cool characters to life. Mrs Moro and the Year 4’s commended us on our ability to memorize numerous lines. Bravo to all Year 7’s involved! Written by Savva Toumazos | Year 7

Year 10 Musical Highlights The Year 10 Music students have been very productive developing their aural skills and understanding. Students have been collaborating together within an ensemble exploring music from a range of cultures and genres, extending their understanding and using more complex rhythms and diversity of pitch and expression in different forms. Students undergoing Year 10 Music as part of their studies interpret, rehearse and perform solo and ensemble repertoire in a range of forms and styles. They use their knowledge of the elements of music notation to arrange, compose and share music. Rosemarie Andreacchio | Music Teacher, Year 7-12

MESSAGE FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL

Student Celebrations - Future Young Matildas

Year 11 student Georgie Nicola and Year 10 student Eleftheria Pirintzis are two of the College's most skilful female soccer players. Both girls recently represented South Australia in the National Junior Championships held in Canberra. The competition saw the girls fly over to Canberra for five days to compete against other states and for player identification for the Under 17 and Under 19 Young Matildas team. Both Georgie and Eleftheria play in the same team and show extreme dedication to their sport as well as commitment to their education. The College would like to congratulate both Georgie and Eleftheria on their achievement in representing South Australia and wish them all the success in their future soccer careers and hopefully we will see them both on our TV screens playing for The Matildas! Daniella Marciano | Head of Co-Curricular

Under 13 Senior Saturday Morning Soccer This term, St George College has been competing in the North West Junior Soccer Association’s Saturday Morning Competition. We have three teams representing the College; one in Under 6, one in Under 8 and one in the Under 13 Senior competition. The Under 13 Senior team have kicked off their season by competing in a knockout cup, with games that began in Week 2 of Term 2. These games have been going extremely well for the team so far, as the team are yet to lose a match. The cup games started off in a group stage where St George recorded the following results; 5-1, 10-1, and 2-0. The team finished at the top of their group and progressed to the knockout phase of the competition and the round of 20. The team recorded another win at this stage with a result of 8-0. This then led the team to the round of 16, where once again a win was registered but this time with a score line of 5-0. The team is currently at the quarter finals stage with a real chance of winning the competition, as the final is only two games away. Mr King and Mr Shepheard have been fantastic coaches and have helped our whole team to develop and work together. After some really convincing wins, the team hopes their form can continue and lead them to more success. Let’s go St George College! SGC! Ole Ole Ole! Written by Elia Carapetis | Year 7

MESSAGE FROM THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL Miss Stephanie Kosmetos

Opa-cize On Thursday, 11 June we had Opa-Cize visit the Junior Campus for a 40-minute demonstration of a fitness program set to Greek music. Getting fit to Greek music is a new way to workout, stay fit and be happy. All the students and staff in Preschool to Year 4 had SO much fun. Opa-Cize (Exer-cize) was an easy exercise to follow and the 3 fitness instructors created lots of excitement and KEFI for all. We look forward to Opa-Cize coming back next term for an 8 week program of fitness, coordination and fun!

Making Music

In Music, the Year 4 students made their own musical instruments using materials found in the classroom. The students came up with some very creative ways to make music! Then, in groups, they composed their own sheet of music. Concepts discussed were beat, rhythm and rests. The students found it challenging to focus only on their instrument with other instruments being played around them at the same time but it was a great insight into what it is like to be a member of a band!

Central Market Experience It was that time of year, where the students of Year 1 prepared for the experience of shopping for their own ingredients to make their own food. Who would of thought this was even possible from a 6-year-old? Well… if you teach a child explicitly enough, they can do more than you anticipate. These little confident and determined students were on a mission at the Central Market on Wednesday, 8 of June. Each group was assigned a list of goods and fresh produce they needed to purchase in order to have our Healthy Party the following day. It was up to them, with guidance from their teacher/volunteer, to source it. Some even taste tested the produce before deciding to buy it. It was hilarious, yet delightful to see them interact with the shop owners. Their innocence and inquisitiveness is enough to energise those that surrounded them. Miss Iliana Toumbas | Year 1 Teacher

On Wednesday, 22nd of June, the Junior Campus participated in the Cancer Council’s Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea to raise money for the wonderful educational and research work the Council undertakes. We would like to express our deepest gratitude to the College’s students and families for their delicious food contributions and very generous donations. We raised a total of $428.85! What a wonderful donation for an amazing cause! Mrs Kelly Pridmore | Enrichment & Resource Based Learning
