“Forever Reign”“Crazy Love” Week 5: You Must Be Crazy!

Review: Week 1, we studied “A Match Made in Heaven” from the book of Hosea. We discovered God’s outrageous

love for His people and marveled at God’s grace

towards the adulterous nation of Israel (and us).


Review: Week 2, we jokingly referred to our sometimes

feeble response to God’s crazy love as, “Lifestyles of the

Lukewarm and Passionless.” We used several biblical

thermometers to see just how “hot” or “not” our current

response to God is. And we were amazed by God’s

unchanging love toward us.


Review: Week 3, we explored “The Crazy Love of Your

Heavenly Father” and discovered some of the good gifts He blesses us with - gifts

like tenderness, time, toil, trials, talents, and treasure.

What we do with His gifts is our gift to Him.


Review: Week 4, we recognized that sometimes our relational

status with God could be described as, “It’s

Complicated.”

We also discovered how to bring back “that loving feeling” if we have lost it.

done for love?


The things Jesus did for love…

Jesus went to Jerusalem even though he ____ what

awaited him there.

Mark 10:32-34 They were on their way up to Jerusalem, with Jesus leading the way, and the disciples were astonished, while those who followed were afraid. Again he took the Twelve aside and told them what was going to happen to him. “We are going up to Jerusalem,” he said, “and the Son of Man will be betrayed to the chief priests and teachers of the law. They will condemn him to death and will hand him over to the Gentiles, who will mock him and spit on him, flog him and kill him. Three days later he will rise.”


John 12:13 They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting, “Hosanna! ” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Blessed is the King of Israel!”

How hard this must have been for Jesus, knowing that by the

end of the week, their cheers would turn to jeers.

John 13:1-5 It was just before the Passover Feast. Jesus knew that the time had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he now showed them the full extent of his love. The evening meal was being served, … so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.

Matthew 26:47-50 While he was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, arrived. With him was a large crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests and the elders of the people. Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The one I kiss is the man; arrest him.” Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, “Greetings, Rabbi!” and kissed him. Jesus replied, “Friend, do what you came for.” Then the men stepped forward, seized Jesus and arrested him.



Jesus allowed Himself to be flogged, mocked, beaten, and crucified


John 19:1 Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged.

Flogging was a horrible form of torture that involved the use of

a leather whip (“cat-o-nine-tails”) embedded with sharp

objects to scourge the victim’s flesh. It was often used to weaken a person prior to

crucifixion.


Matthew 27:27-30 Then the governor’s soldiers took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole company of soldiers around him. They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him, and then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on his head. They put a staff in his right hand and knelt in front of him and mocked him. “Hail, king of the Jews!” they said. They spit on him, and took the staff and struck him on the head again and again.


Mark 15:25-37 It was the third hour when they crucified him. The written notice of the charge against him read: THE KING OF THE JEWS. They crucified two robbers with him, one on his right and one on his left. Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads and saying, “So! You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days, come down from the cross and save yourself!” In the same way the chief priests and the teachers of the law mocked him among themselves. “He saved others,” they said, “but he can’t save himself! Let this Christ, this King of Israel, come down now from the cross, that we may see and believe.”


Mark 15:25-37 Those crucified with him also heaped insults on him. At the sixth hour darkness came over the whole land until the ninth hour. And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” When some of those standing near heard this, they said, “Listen, he’s calling Elijah.” One man ran, filled a sponge with wine vinegar, put it on a stick, and offered it to Jesus to drink. “Now leave him alone. Let’s see if Elijah comes to take him down,” he said. With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last.


Crucifixion was a horrific form of execution designed

to exact the maximum amount of pain and suffering upon a person prior to death. After hours of struggling to breathe, the person being crucified would become

exhausted and die of suffocation.

Matthew 5:44 But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven.
