When?8
WHAT’S CINEMA?LET’S THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU HAVE SEEN
What did you see?
Who made it?
When was it made? When were these images taken?
Where was it recorded?9
WHAT’S CINEMA?LET’S THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU HAVE SEEN
What did you see? The earliest moving image in the world called “The horse in motion”
Who made it? Eadweard Muybridge made it.
When was it made? When were these images taken? There were taken in 1878
Where was it recorded? It was recorded in Palo Alto, California, in United States.
10
WHAT’S CINEMA?
Cinema is an illusion
It is generally shared by
most people
11
The term illusion refers to a
specific form of sensory
distortion
Clil project by Rosa Maria Andrés Blanch IES Vilatzara 2011
WHAT’S CINEMA?
HOW MUYBRIDGE MAKE HIS EARLIEST FILM?
1.He lined 16 cameras at equal distance from each other.
2.He took 16 photographs with a mechanism that activated the cameras as the horse ran by.
12
WHAT’S CINEMA?
3. He put these pictures in sequential order.
13
HOW CAN
PHOTOGRAPHS MOVE?
14
LESSON 2HOW CAN PHOTOGRAPHS MOVE?
LESSON 2HOW CAN PHOTOGRAPHS MOVE?
When FRAMES are shown rapidly in succession, a viewer has the illusion that motion is occurring

18Clil project by Rosa Maria Andrés Blanch IES Vilatzara 2011
What you have seen is an illusion of motion, but you can still see the flickering between frames

20Clil project by Rosa Maria Andrés Blanch IES Vilatzara 2011
LESSON 2HOW CAN PHOTOGRAPHS MOVE?
The viewer cannot see the flickering between frames due to an effect known as persistence of vision. That means the eye retains a visual image for a fraction of a second after the source is removed.

LESSON 2 HOW CAN PHOTOGRAPHS MOVE?
Is cinema what
Eadweard Muydridge made? NO, it is not
but
This series of photos stands as one of the earliest forms of videography.
22
LESSON 2HOW CAN PHOTOGRAPHS MOVE?
Is cinema what
Eadweard Muydridge made?
NO, it is not
It’s ANIMATION
That’s the rapid display of a sequence of images
23

Eadweard Muydridge made? NO, it is not
It’s an optical illusion of motion

WHO INVENTED MOTION PICTURES?
No one.
No one can claim this achievement for himself
LESSON 3 MOTION PICTURES DEVICES
40Clil project by Rosa Maria Andrés Blanch IES Vilatzara 2011
Many scientists and inventors from 15th to 19th Century contributed to the success of
motion pictures.
They shared their knowledge.
and
So many inventions, motion toys and devices began to appear
LESSON 3 MOTION PICTURES DEVICES

MAGIC LANTERN
BINOCULAR GLASSES
PRAXINOSCOPE LENS
ZOOPRAXISCOPE

ZOOTROPE
LESSON 3. MOTION PICTURES DEVICES
KINETOSCOPE

STROBOSCOPE
42
LESSON 3MOTION PICTURES DEVICES
MOST OF THESE DEVICES WERE VERY EASY TO USE
ZOOTROPE 43Clil project by Rosa Maria Andrés Blanch IES Vilatzara 2011
How does a zootrope work?
By rotating. It rotates.
The images give the illusion of
movement as the drum is spun.

The Kinetoscope is an early motion picture exhibition device projected by Thomas A. Edison and developed by his employee William Dickson between 1889 and 1892

A meeting between Eadweard Muybridge and Thomas Edison inspired Edison to start developing a motion picture system.
LESSON 3 MOTION PICTURES DEVICES
47Clil project by Rosa Maria Andrés Blanch IES Vilatzara 2011
LESSON 3 MOTION PICTURES DEVICES
The Kinetoscop was designed for films to be viewed individually. People looked through the window of a cabinet with its components inside.
It creates the illusion of movement by showing a strip of perforated film with sequential images over a light source .
48Clil project by Rosa Maria Andrés Blanch IES Vilatzara 2011
•The film was 35mm.wide.
•It was made of celluloid.
•Each vertically sequenced frame had a rectangular image and four perforations on each side.
•This basic format was adopted globally as the standard for motion pictures film, and still remains.
