Training

1. It’s the responsibility of employer to assure training has been provided for all employees

2. Having an employee watch a video and take a written test IS NOT ENOUGH to meet OSHA requirements

You can find resources for forklift safety at the link below

Instructional Components

Forklift operation and safety training must include the following instruction components.

1. Classroom instruction

2. Practical evaluation

3. Operating instructions

These are the 3 most important components. Please view the article at www.palletenterprise.com/3d/feb2015/files/32.htmlto see the entire list.

Additional Info

• Along with written instructional materials, it is also important to have the manufacturer’s operating manual available for operator review.

• Forklift operation and safety training must be provided at the initial hire, and at least every 3 years

Pre-Shift Inspection Requirements• Only 1 shift = inspection once per day

• Multiple shifts = inspection prior to each shift

Inspection Components

• Simple but importance cannot be understated

• Drawing a line through the checklist is unacceptable

• Make a spreadsheet covering all components required of pre-shift inspection or purchase forklift inspection form.

(1/3)

• Inspection form information needs to include:

– Forklift model and number

– Dates and times of inspection

– Inspectors name or initials

– Forklift hoursAn example checklist can be viewed on the previous slide. For the full picture, use the link provided. (May not be adequate for every forklift)

• Before operation, each forklift must pass inspection. If found unsafe, forklift must remain out-of-service until properly repaired.

(2/3)

• Employers need written forklift operation and safety training program to identify policies and procedures.

• Examples of written programs can be found on OSHA website

• “When it comes to safety training, document, document, document.” – Jerry Winstead Safety Consultant
