DESCRIBE THE PRESENT AND ORIGINAL. (It known) PHYSICAL. APPEARANCE

One and one-half story frame building facing east (ca. 1881). Exterior covered with clapboard siding. House has six rooms. Simple rectangular design under a ridge roof. Facade, three bays wide, is slightly asymmetrical. Structure is devoid of ornamentation except for slight detail on wooden window and door frames. Bay window on south gable end wall first floor. Central brick chimney bisects roof ridge. Windows and doors have vertical proportions in relation to the walls.

House was donated to the State of Missouri by the United Automobile Workers in 19^7. Lean-to porch on the front of building was removed. Original, unrestored smoke house and well remain behind the house. House has been furnished in the Victorian style of the 1880's. Restoration was comoleted in

STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE (Include Personages, Dates, F.v-tnts, Etc.)

Harry S. Truman, thirty-second President of the United States, was born in this house on May 8, 1884. Truman's father, John A. Truman, purchased the house from the builder, Simon Blethroad, in 1882. The family lived in the house until Truman was eleven months old. In 1890. the Truman family settled permanently in Indeoendcnce, Missouri.

In 1.927, Truman yas elected to the Jackson County Court as Presiding Judge. In 1935 hs was elected to the United States Senate ana in 1945 he became Vice-President of the United States. That same year he assumed the Presidency following the death cf President Franklin D. Roosevalt, Truman \v-as subsequently elected President, in 1948.

During the Truman Administration (1945-1953) World War IT was brought to a close; the Truman Doctrine and Marshall Plan soearheaded the fight against Communistic aggression; and the Fair Deal continued the domestic oolici.es of Franklin D. Roosevelt. Truman is also noted for his efforts in formulating the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

House stands as a tribute to Missouri's only native-born who has to date become President of the United States.
