By RICHIE HALLReporter Sports EditorIt seems that the Hamilton Southeastern

boys basketball team is setting a newstandard with every game this season

Before Fridays home game withLawrence Central the Royals honored theirsenior star Zach Gunn who broke theschools rebounding record last week whileleading HSE to a championship at theHuntington North tournament After thatSoutheastern added another victory to its2016-17 ledger beating the Bears 77-64

The Royals who are ranked No 10 inClass 4A are now 11-1 for the season andriding an eight-game winning streak Thisis the first time HSE has won eight straightsince it opened the 2013 season by winningits first eight games It also marked the 250thcareer victory for Brian Satterfield who isin his 16th season as Royals head coach

Southeastern jumped out to a 20-11 leadonce the first quarter was finished Gunnscored nine points and Austin Holzumthrew up an off-balance 3-point shot at thebuzzer which went in

I thought that was huge saidSatterfield

Lawrence Central played the Royalsclose for most of the game but Southeasternwas always able to stay anywhere from sixto 11 points ahead then got up by 68-50 inthe fourth quarter Free throw shooting wasa big factor - the Royals were 23-of-27overall including 5-of-5 in the secondperiod and 7-of-8 in the third

Satterfield said his team took care of thebasketball during its second-half run butthen ran into a dry patch where he estimatedthat HSE probably went three out of thenext five possessions where we hadturnovers which allowed the Bears to getwithin striking distance

But to our credit we took care ofbusiness when we needed to saidSatterfield who said his team kept attackingthe basket getting to the foul line andmaking those important free throws

Gunn led the way with 18 points whileJack Davidson scored 17 including a 9-of-9effort from the line Noah Smith scored 17points as well Gunn grabbed sevenrebounds while Smith had five Davidsonhanded out four assists

Everyones playing good said GunnA lot of guys are stepping up Tonight someguys played really well I think we had threeguys with 15-plus

Sheridan improves to 3-0 in HHC

Gunns rebounding at the HuntingtonNorth tourney sent him past a record thathad stood for 40 years - the old record-holder was Larry Raymer a 1977 HSEgraduate And now that Gunn a senior hasthe record he plans to ldquokeep going and addto his new mark After Fridays game Gunnsits at 674 career rebounds

The Royals will be back in actiontonight traveling to Warren Central TheWarriors are 8-0 for the season andreceiving votes in the Class 4A poll

Sheridan improves to 3-0 in HHC
