Raunkiaer’s classification is asystem published by Christen

Raunkiaer in 1934 to describe

plant life forms.

It is based on the location of thebuds on the plant and the way the

resting bud survives periods of

adverse conditions – like cold or

drought.

It is a useful way to relate plant

and environmental interactions.

Raunkiaer’s classification

•  Phanerophyte

•  Chamaephyte

•  Hemicryptophyte

•  Cryptophyte

•  Geophyte

•  Helophyte

•  Hydrophyte

  Therophyte•  Epiphyte

•  Aerophyte

Raunkiaer’s classification

Magnolia

Phanerophytes are the woodyperennials (trees and shrubs). The resting buds are > 0.5 mabove ground.

Phanerophytes have been further

subdivided based on the size ofthe plants into

megaphanerophytes,

mesophanerophytes and

nanophanerophytes.

Additional modification to thisclass recognizes differences indeciduous and evergreen species.

Raunkiaer’s classification

Grasses, clover and dandelion areall hemicryptophytes.

Hemicryptophytes are herbaceousperennial plants with the restingbud at or near the soil line.

Raunkiaer’s classification

Cryptophytes areperennial plants wherethe resting bud is belowground including thosebelow water.

Cryptophytes can befurther subdivided intogeophytes, helophytesand hydrophytes.

Raunkiaer’s classification

Geophytes have roots or shootsthat are modified as storageorgans.

Geophytes include bulbs, corms,

rhizomes, tubers, tuberousshoots, and tuberous roots.

Raunkiaer’s classification

Cattail (Typha )

Helophytes are those plants that growin wet soils. The resting bud is belowground in the wet soil.

Cryptophyte

Marsh marigold (Caltha )

Raunkiaer’s classification

Hydrophytes grow in water and restingbud overwinters below the surface of thewater often in the lake bed floor.

Cryptophyte

Waterlily (Nymphaea ) Lotus (Nelumbo nucifera )

Raunkiaer’s classification

An epiphyte is a plant that grows onanother plant, but does not derivewater or nutrients from theassociation.

Epiphytic vascular plants occurmost often in the moist tropics andinclude ferns, aroids, orchids, bromeliads, peperomias, and cactus.

Non-vascular epiphytes includemosses and lichens.

Raunkiaer’s classification

Spanish moss (Tillandsia usneoides )

Aerophytes are epiphytes, but theyhave no functional roots and absorbmoisture and nutrients through theirleaves.

A good example of this type of plantis Tillandsia .

Tillandsia cyanea )
