Forms and conventions
• Anti war films portray their films of war as negatively. They engage the audience to feel sorry for a particular character. They want the audience to acknowledge the horror and heartbreak of war.
• War films are also filled with tragedy, sorrow and sadness.
Saving Private Ryan
• Saving private Ryan does this as it portray the horror of a woman losing her 3 sons. In order to save the last son a number of men are killed. It shows typical unhappiness and sadness that is associated with war films
Deer hunter
• Deer hunter also shows the audience with a sadness associated with war films with a soldier having to play Russian roulette with his best friend in order to ‘save’ him.
• We are however saddened when Stan (John Cazale) shoots himself in the game. This gives the audience the feeling of heartbreak that Michael (Robert De Niro) feels.
‘Lost Boys’
• Our film wants to relate to the reality of world war 2. We wanted to cast an age group of around 18 – 20 to engage the audience straight away that they suddenly feel sorry for such a young group of men who face death and pain.
• This also creates the feeling that the age group of the young men can relate strongly with the cast of the film
