FORMS OF A MUSIC VIDEO.
By Danielle Walker and Hope Shepherd
AMPLIFICATION
v A visual interpretation video to add meaning to the lyrics of the song. Created
by the director to exemplify the style and tone of the song and lyrics. This is a
connotive approach to a music video and uses surrealism or create interpretations
and meaning behind the song.

v In the video for The Fear – Lily Allen, surrealism is used to put a hidden
meaning behind the lyrics into the video and connotes the lyrics instead of denoting
them and showing the meaning of them in a clear way.
ILLUSTRATIVE
v The illustrative music video is the most common music video. An illustration
approach to a music video contains a narrative or a performance video or both. The
purpose, opposite of amplification is to denote the lyrics and visualize the meaning
of the lyrics in a clear way.

v The video for Audioslave – Cochise is both a performance and illustrative form
of music video and shows the use of the vocalists and the band using instruments
and well as telling a story of the meaning of the lyrics and denoting them
throughout the video.
DISJUNCTION
v This type of music video is most common among the indie genre of
music. It uses a completely abstract idea which contains no link or
meaning to the song or its lyrics. It may use a repetitive approach such as a
repeated dance routine or movement.

v The video for Islands – The xx uses a repeated dance routine
throughout the video in meaning of a completely abstract idea and shows
no meaning behind the lyrics and so uses a connotive approach.
