LANDO NORRIS
Lando Norris may only be 19 years of age, but he is already a seasoned winner on the international motorsport stage.
Lando Norris may only be 19 years of age, but he is already a seasoned winner on the international motorsport stage. Since taking up karting at age 7, the Briton has won races and championships at almost every discipline in which he has competed.
After becoming the youngest ever karting World Champion in 2014, Norris graduated to single-seaters and kept on winning. Since 2015, he has taken titles in British Formula 4, the Toyota Racing Series in New Zealand, Formula Renault and the FIA F3 European Championship.
Norris became part of McLaren’s driver development programme in early 2017 and got his first taste of an F1 car at an in-season test at the Hungaroring. He became the official McLaren test and reserve driver for the 2018 F1 season, as well as competing in the Formula 2 Championship. With one win and a string of podiums, the consistent Norris narrowly missed out on winning the 2018 F2 title to rival George Russell.
Lando Norris will make his Formula 1 debut for McLaren at the 2019 Australian Grand Prix.

JACQUES VILLENEUVE
Like Damon Hill, Jacques Villeneuve is another second-generation Grand Prix driver who escaped the long shadow of a famous father, Gilles, to become World Champion through his own efforts and on his own terms. He claims he was always going to follow in his father's footsteps, though Jacques was just 11 years old when Gilles was killed in 1982.
Brought up in Monaco rather than his native Canada, Villeneuve learned his craft in F3 in Italy and Japan before moving Stateside and the American Formula Atlantic championship. After graduating to Indycar in 1994, Villeneuve produced a promising season, which was followed by a superb one in 1995. He took victory in the Indianapolis 500 as well as the Indycar championship. This, together with the desire by F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone to see an 'American' driver in F1, eased him straight into the top Grand Prix team in the business for 1996.
After putting his Williams on pole position for his F1 debut, Villeneuve scored three wins and took the championship battle with teammate Damon Hill down to the wire. At Estoril he also earned the ultimate respect of the F1 world by doing the unthinkable - passing Michael Schumacher round the outside. Credentials thus established, Villeneuve headed into 1997 looking to go one better than his '96 runner-up position. After beginning the year strongly, he suffered some midseason 'wobbles' - crashing out of the lead in Canada through pure driving error, being off the pace in both France and Germany - which was all the inspired Schumacher needed to take the lead of the series. A strong fight back by Williams and Villeneuve looked like reaping its reward though, until the penultimate round in Japan where Villeneuve was suspended for a practice yellow flag infringement - his fourth of the season - and Schumacher won.
All of which left Villeneuve virtually neck and neck with the German for a dramatic showdown at Jerez for the European Grand Prix. Though Schumacher made the early running, after both drivers had made their routine stops, Jacques began to hunt the Ferrari down. Once it was in his sights, he decided to surprise Schumacher by diving for the inside from a long way back. It was a beautiful move and Schumacher indeed was surprised. When he realized his error he turned into the Williams but succeeded only in putting himself into the gravel trap and out of the race. Villeneuve continued in the lead and on the last lap allowed the McLarens of Hakkinen and Coulthard to overtake him. His championship was thus secure and had been won the hard way.

JEAN ALESI
A mercurial and forceful racer, French-Italian driver Jean Alesi first came to prominence by winning the 1987 French F3 Championship.
After struggling in his first season of F3000 with Oreca in 1988, Eddie Jordan gave him a chance for 1989. Alesi proved the find of the season, clinching the championship despite moving up F1 for Tyrrell halfway through the year. At one stage on his F1 debut at Paul Ricard he was running as high as second behind Alain Prost. Eventually he finished a stunning fourth.
As other strong results flowed, including a sensational second place at Phoenix in 1990 behind Ayrton Senna, the top teams began circling. Admitting that his heart ruled his head, Alesi turned down an offer from Williams to join Ferrari in 1991. Alesi’s story over the next five years became one of promise tragically unfulfilled as the red cars struggled. More than once he seemed set to win, only for fate to intervene.
Eventually, he was replaced by Michael Schumacher and moved to Benetton, where he notched up his first – and only – F1 victory at the 1995 Canadian Grand Prix on his 31st birthday. Further stints followed with Sauber, Prost and Jordan before Alesi retired at the end of 2001 after 201 Formula 1 starts. Alesi moved to DTM for the next five years, scoring five victories.
Alesi now commentates for Canal+. His son Giuliano Alesi will compete in the 2019 FIA Formula 2 Championship alongside Mick Schumacher, the son of Jean’s former rival Michael. Alesi is passionate about wine, and has his own vineyard near his hometown of Avignon.
