Dear Parents and Caregivers

Welcome to what has been an interesting start for Term 2. Schooling is gradually returning to normal as more of our students return to the school site, though some are still continuing with home based learning programs. We have experienced 80% attendance rate throughout this week. For us, the biggest obstacle has been not having parents onsite. It definitely has been a big challenge for our younger students also. We thank you all for following our drop off and pick up procedures, your positive feedback regarding our dedicated and hard working teachers who are doing their very best to communicate with families of students attending class and learning from home. Your support and kind words are appreciated by all staff at Forrestdale. Moving forward to next week, the Premier has announced that schooling will be compulsory and that students who remained away from school would no longer be provided with home learning packages and instead be registered as an unexplained absence. The Premier stated only children who were medically vulnerable or lived with a family member with a chronic illness would be exempt and would require official medical documentation, which will be assessed and approved by the Department of Education. “These students will be assessed and continue to learn from home and be supported by their schools and the Department of Education,” Mr McGowan said. Minister for Education Sue Ellery said support for those students to continue their learning would be a combination of distance

learning, direct support and help from the School of Isolated and Distance Education.

Dear Parents and Caregivers I feel very fortunate to step into the Deputy Principal role here at Forrestdale Primary School. As more children return to school, I have had the opportunity to meet all of them and have felt very welcomed by their smiling faces and enthusiasm. It is great to hear the sound of children’s voices again as they continue to grow, learn and explore. As the Department has encouraged, school is now open. We have put many practices in place to ensure that our environment and equipment is cleaned and disinfected regularly throughout the day and are still encouraging students to wash hands regularly and social distance when possible. We look forward to more students returning soon. Please continue to show kindness to others through these uncertain times. It will make people feel safe and cared about. DROP-OFF AND PICK-UP To our parents, you have been amazing with your reaction to events over the last few weeks and have supported us with the Department’s direction to remain off site. The students have shown real resilience coming into the school grounds on their own, in particular the Kindy and Pre-primary students. For those returning to school, please be sure to familiarise yourselves with the adjustments to drop-off and pick up locations. These changes remain in place until further notice. A huge thank you to parents for your assistance in keeping this running so smoothly, and to the incredible staff who get all of the students safely in and out of the school in record time. SCHOOL DEVELOPMENT DAY AND WA DAY The school will retain our long planned and publicised school development day to be held on Friday 29 May. Students do not attend school on this day. This will be followed by the WA Public Holiday on Monday 1 June, giving a four-day mid-term break for students, and the opportunity for our staff and school to plan for the remainder of the year and beyond. SEMESTER ONE REPORTS Due to the unusual circumstances of the past few months, changes will be made to Semester 1 reports across our school system. We should have a better understanding of how this will look in the next week or two, and will be in touch with you to inform you of the modified format and content of our Semester 1 reports. BOOK CLUB Just like everything at the moment, Book Club is doing things a little differently. The great news is that we are still running Book Club this Term. So with everything changing in our world right now, it’s nice to know that our tradition of putting books into the hands of children hasn’t changed. There will be no hard copies sent home, but Scholastic has created a Virtual Book Club catalogue for this issue only! To order from this issue go to: Scholastic.com.au/ Book-Club/virtual-catalogue-1/ and place your order. Orders need to be in by: Monday 18 MAY. Cash orders will not be accepted for this Issue. We will receive your order here to our school like normal. Once your order arrives, we will contact you to arrange for collection or hand them out to the children that are at school.

What’s been happening at FPS

Last week the sand pits in our early childhood play area had a makeover. They have been emptied and fresh new clean sand

has been put in. We hope the children enjoy this.

The netball and basket ball courts are also getting a make over. The existing surface was quite rough and the new surface is nearly ready to be finalised and will be a lots smoother and safer for the students!

Running Club……

Running club is back up and running on Friday

mornings. Please meet on the school oval at 8:00am

with sports shoes, drink bottle and school hat.

Music News

I am very excited to announce that this year there will be a Year 1/2 Junior Choir as well as our Year 3/4/5/6 Senior Choir. Things of course may be presented a little differently, but

rest assured, we will still be learning songs ready to share with you however we can. The Junior and Senior Dale District Music Festivals

have been postponed for this year at this stage.

I am in the process of creating a Class Dojo for

both Choirs so I can upload lyrics and music for students.

Best wishes from Ms Cullen

Push Up Challenge Forrestdale Primary began the Push-Up Challenge on Monday. This is an excellent opportunity for our students to work on their upper body strength and fitness, as well as be involved in raising money to support the amazing work that Headspace do for our community. Headspace focus on early intervention, supporting young people at crucial times in their lives. They have provided mental health support for thousands of young Australians. Your child has been given the sponsorship form and any donation or sponsorship we are able to provide will be greatly appreciated for this worthy cause.

Pre-primary EC1 Even in these uncertain times we have been in action in EC1. This term, we have reached a class goal and we have made a ‘Pea Tee Pee’ to use for our measuring focus this term. Congratulations to the Pre-primary students in EC1 on reaching your 500 Class Dojo points, these points were for participating as a team, encouraging fellow students, kindness to others and personal best efforts, all resulting in being a valued class member in EC1. When we are all back together, I will invite the parents to pack a ‘hidden’ treat in their child’s lunch box for the children to enjoy. Well done EC1 students, we are now working towards our next goal to collect 1000 Class Dojo Points together to have a Movie/Popcorn Party. Our Pea Tee Pee is out the back of our classroom, The children planted a Sugar Snap Pea in a pot and one for a friend (all children have a pot). We will take good care of them and help them grow. As they grow we will measure the growth each week and create a ‘growth chart’ The vegetables and salads we planted in our caterpillar garden last term are growing well, We planted radishes, lettuce, beetroot, spinach, broad beans, carrots, capsicums, cabbage, cauliflower, tomatoes, strawberries and a beautiful sunflower.

KINDERGARTEN……….

It has been so lovely welcoming the majority of the Kindy children back

to our classroom and receiving photos from those children learning

from home.

We have been enjoying our new home corner set up, taking

rides in the car with friends and buying items from the

“shop” to pop in our trolley and take away to eat.

We have been practicing our counting, subitising (recognising dot patterns or small quantities

without needing to count) and number recognition by fishing and counting or knowing how many

dots are on the back and putting it in the right number pouch.

We have been practicing making patterns using gems and other items, as well

as practicing our name writing and number writing in the morning and we

would love your help practicing this skill at home.

Room 7 In Room 7 has been studying History. The class has been looking at how Indigenous groups communicated with each other. This evolved into the class looking at message sticks and communicating by using a code. The class then wrote the alphabet and designed their own code using symbols. It was a wonderful and engaging activity with students enjoying making their own code and having a go at cracking other codes to reveal secret messages.

Room 6……. It has certainly been a busy start to the term! We have all been working hard in Room Six and have been showing resilience as we learn how we can adapt to big changes in our lives. In numeracy, we have been working hard to learn our times tables. We are starting to learn our four times tables, which is very exciting for us. In literacy, we have been learning about persuasive texts. We have looked at the following topics: chocolate or fruit, music or sport and whether dogs should be allowed to come to school. In our news breaks, we have been quizzing our peers on animals. We are to present five facts about an animal and our peers get the chance to guess. Even students who are learning at home have been sending in videos for students at school to guess their animals!

Room 3 These pictures show Room 3 students completing their Math lesson last week. They watched the supplied video lesson on Class Dojo, practised the skills using online games, then completed the tasks in their workbooks. Students enjoyed seeing photos of their peers doing the same lesson at the same time - half at home, half at school! Mrs Fletcher Room 3
