Undergraduate
Program
Introduction
DegreesinforestryhavebeenawardedatPennStatesince1907andourprogramwasamongthefirstgroup
offorestryprogramsaccreditedbytheSocietyofAmericanForesters(SAF)in1935. TheSAFisaprofessional
organizationthatstrives,amongotherthings,toadvancethescience,education,technology,andpracticeof
forestryandistheonlyorganizationthatmayaccreditforestrycurriculaintheUnitedStates. PennStates
ForestManagement,ForestBiology,andUrbanForestryoptionsareaccreditedbySAFandallfulfillthe
educationalqualificationrequirementsforthefederaloccupationalseriesinforestry. TheWatershedManagementisnotaccreditedbytheSocietyofAmericanForestersbuttheoptionfulfillstheeducational
qualificationrequirementsforthefederaloccupationalseriesinhydrology. Inaddition,itispossiblethrough
electivecourseworktosatisfyseveralfederalWildlandFirefighterbasictrainings(BasicFirefightingPA130and
IntroductiontoFireBehaviorS190)andWildfirePowerSawsS212.
Professionalforestersarechallengedwithrestoration,habitatcreationandmaintenance,andthe
sustainableprovisionofawiderangeofecosystemservices,whichmayincludecleanwater,construction
timber,carbonsequestration,pulpwood,wildlifehabitat,nontimberforestproducts,recreationalopportunities,
andtreestobeautifyruralandurbanlandscapes. Forasuccessfulforestrycareer,severalpersonalqualitiesare
desirable:
aloveofthewoodsandtheoutdoors
anethical
concern
for
natural
resources
and
an
appreciation
of
nature
aninterestinthecomplexityofforestecosystemsandadesiretoworkwherepeopleandnature
meet(attheinterfaceofbiology,ecology,economics,andsocialissues)
ananalyticalmindandcreativeabilitiesforproblemsolving
theabilitytocommunicatewiththepublicandtosuperviseemployees.
Graduatesmaybecomeforestmanagerswhoareresponsibleformanagingthefloraandfaunainthousands
ofacresofforestsandwatersheds,includingvaluabletimberland,nationalandstateparks,gamelands,and

recreationareas. Othersmayworkasecologists,studyingenvironmentalfactorsthataffectforests,oras
consultants,surveyingtimberlandsandrecommendingharvestandreforestationpractices. Graduatesalsofind
employmentascommunityforestersmanagingstreettreesandurbangreenspaces;asbiometriciansworking
withdatabasestoassessforestconditionsandtrends;asindustrialforestersensuringacompanysneedforraw
materials;asparksuperintendentsoverseeingtheoperationofparksandrecreationfacilities;asresource
economistsdetermininglevelsofsupplyanddemandforforestresources;ashydrologistsmeasuringstream
flowandmanagingmunicipalwatersheds;orinforestpolicy,addressingissuesraisedbytheinteractionof
peopleand
forests.
EmploymentopportunitiesforgraduatesoftheForestManagementandForestBiologyoptionsinclude
forestmanagementpositionswithpublicagenciessuchastheBureauofForestryandtheU.S.ForestService,
nonprofitorganizationssuchasTheNatureConservancy,industriessuchassawmillsandbioenergyfacilities,and
privateenvironmentalconsultingfirms. TheUrbanForestryoptionpreparesstudentstomanagecommunity
treesandgreenspaces. Employmentopportunitiesincludemunicipalities,arboriculturalcompanies,utilities,
andgovernmentagencies. TheWatershedManagementoptionfocusesontheintegratedmanagementof
naturalresources,withemphasisonwater. Graduatescanfindfederalemploymentashydrologistsorpursue
careersinmunicipalwatershedmanagement;inlocal,state,andfederalgovernment;andin
environmental/engineeringconsulting.

Curriculum Overview
TheB.S.
program
in
Forest
Science
provides
the
education
necessary
for
students
to
pursue
professional
careersinoneofthefollowingfouroptions: (1)ForestBiology,(2)ForestManagement,(3)UrbanForestry,and
(4)WatershedManagement. Theseoptionsalsopreparestudentsforgraduatestudiesandcontinuing
professionaleducation.
Aswithmanyprofessions,thescopeandcomplexityoftheforestryprofessionhasincreasedsinceits
inceptionintheUnitedStatesnearlyacenturyago. Notonlydoforestersnowmanageforawiderangeof
ecosystemservicesrequiringspecializedknowledge,buttechnologicaladvanceshaveexpandedtherangeof
necessarytechnicalskillswhilesocietalshiftshaveexpandedtherangeofnecessaryprofessionalskills. The
ForestSciencecurriculumsatisfiesthesethreeareasby1)ensuringprofessionalskillsthroughgeneraleducation
requirementsandacrosstheboardskilldevelopmentinupperdivisioncourses,2)providingtechnicalskills
throughthecorerequirementsofthemajor,and3)offeringfourseparateoptionsforspecialization.
ForestBiologyOption:Thisoptionprovidesastrongbackgroundinthebiologicalandecologicalaspectsof
contemporaryforestryandestablishesasoundfoundationforprofessionalemploymentandgraduatelevel
studyinforestandenvironmentalsciences.
ForestManagementOption:Thisoptionprovidesprofessionaltraininginthemanagementofforestlands
consistentwiththeneedsofownershipobjectives.Employmentopportunitiesincludeforestmanagement
positionswithpublicagencies,industry,andprivateconsultingfirms.

UrbanForestryOption:Thisoptionpreparesstudentsformanagerialresponsibilitiesrelatedtolandscape
treesandgreenspaceincommunitiesandemphasizesplanningandtechnicalexpertiseincommunityforestry
andarboriculture. Abroadbasiceducationisthefoundationforspecializedcoursescoveringurbanforest
